    Hi all

    Today I went and bought myself my very own Asus, it's a nice cherry red colour contrasting with a black rim around the screen, this thing feels and looks as expensive as it was and I must say this must be the most solidly built laptop I've ever had the pleasure of owning.

    I've noticed that my hard disc has a tendency to make these click sounds, like maybe once or twice once in a while, they don't sound like the infamous "click of death" most of you have experienced down the road and my laptop is running flawlessly 3 hours after its initial boot up, is it normal for hard drives to make a couple light clicking sounds sometimes?

    Yes that's normal, especially when it's under heavy load. There is an important difference between light access clicking sounds and a louder click, which would probably indicate a problem. You should be able to use a S.M.A.R.T. tool to see your drive health. There are free ones like SMART monitor 2, etc. WD also has its own diagnostic software which you can find on their site http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?lang=en

    Well I've done loads of checks on my hard disc and no problem could be found, do certain hard drives make certain sounds?

    It's just like this occasional quiet but noticeable click.. sometimes does it once.. sometimes maybe three times.. then nothing...

    Could this indicate hard drive failure? :eek:
    Good job I backed up the little data I put on this :eek:

    If it's being accessed (the hard disk LED is flashing) and it's making a louder than normal tick every once in a while, that's usually normal. When it's being used to open a large program or lots of data, it will make louder noises than when it's being used closer to idle.

    If it's making loud ticks or the drive is spinning up and down because of head parking, that is something to potentially worry about. Some WD drives don't allow you to change head parking, at least in windows, as far as I know. If you've run WD diagnostics on it and it turns up fine, and you've backed up your data, you've done the best you can.

    Keep backup from all your important data ..

    Had wd hdd clicking loud for 10 years and still working fine.
    Got hdd-s whining under load some when idle they work fine.
    Had maxtor die in first day after buying.
    Had the famous 500gb seagate dieing out of the blue .. next day other one losing data ... even after firmware update throw 3 more of those 500gb in the trash .. bad batch ..

    You never know with hardrives.

    @Ghosthostile,

    The click sound could be nothing. Maybe the WD HDD have advanced power management. Try quietHDD.
