maybe i'm dumb but i cant figure out how to use the internal wireless lan
all i ever had before was external wireless lan that you had to install and then put the card in.
I looked in the user manuel and the instructions just say "Running setup will give you the following wizard.."(pg.36) um
I put in that utilities disc but am I supposed to install everything on this disc??
On a good note- I dont seem to have any dead pixels.![]()

Isn't PROSet already installed?
If not, you'll need to install that, Intel's wireless program, which searches and connects to wireless networks
I've only used PROSet for a week, then switched to Atheros so I don't recall how it looks like nor how to use it
No dead pixels = yay -

... you NEED to turn it on via the button on the right hand side of the chassis.....
-
Coriolis- hmm i have something and it was searching and it says it cant find any place to connect to the net, but im on my old laptop now and its connecting to the net just fine. both laptops are in the same place so i dont know what the problem is.
Pro- Mm I think it was already on, When I pushed it it said "Wireless lan off" so i pushed it again to turn it on
But prior to that there is a little icon in the taskbar and it says "wireless lan/bluetooth" with little x's on the side..so i guess it has been on

Well then, you've got to go in and locate your access point and make sure you're connecting to it (even if it's an unsecured network)...... fairly simple, but once you do it it'll always conect without doing anything.

Enable wireless and then double-click on that icon in the taskbar to get the Intel PROSet setup screen. Available networks show up in the bottom window and you then need to select the network you want and configure it. Once configured, it will connect automatically in future.
John -
Hmm
I go to "view available wireless networks" then a screen pops up- i go to "refresh network list" because it tells me no wireless networks were found (yet every other computer in my house is connecting fine to our wireless network)
So after i push refresh the network list A TON of times, once in awhile my network that all our comps are connected to will pop up but it doesnt let me connect.
Im not sure if that is the intel proset setup screen if not i dont know where that is.
But yeah, it says i have no available networks unless i click refresh a bunch and then when my network shows up i can not even connect to it. (Yes the wireless is on)
-
It's pretty easy to tell the difference between the PROset screen and the windows wireless utility... if it's PROset, it will say PROset somewhere.
Sounds to me like your wireless card may be faulty... either that or you need to reinstall the drivers (nd software) for it. -
Okay how exactly do I get to the proset screen?
sorry i don't see it. i guess the thing i had open was the windows wireless utility -
Nevermind, I ran a search for "proset" and found it.
ETA-
i clicked configure and it takes me to the configuration screen.. now, is there a certain configuration i need to do? or can i put anything?
Because it asks for a network name and ijust put "home" (but that isnt the name of the network on my wireless hub)
anyway, it just says its unable to connect
so when i configure it does it need to be the same name as my wireless hub? -
-
*edit*
Okay so i went back to the configure thing and on my "home" network i pushed "properties" and changed it from infrastructure to AD HOC and it connects now
but i cant recall ever selecting "ad hoc" on my other notebooks. it was always "infrastructure"
it says "ad hoc" is "connect directly to other computers" umm? does this have anything to do with the built in bluetooth on the w3v
But other than that..it says im connected but i cant go to any webpages or anything. i get "the page cannot be displayed" screen -

Seen this a few times.
1. Reset your router to factory settings. In particular make sure ssid is set to broadcast and disable any security features.
2. Reboot your laptop
3. Set either the microsoft client or windows. If you are planning on using wep then use microsoft as i never was able to get a stable connect out of proset but i hae an m5n.
4. If using microsoft client after resetting your router it should tell you automatically that it found a connection. you dont have to set up any ad hocs or specify names.
Hopefully that will get you going. Then after you can start messing around with your router security settings. -
I get this question a lot too. Try installing the netbeui or IPX/SPX/Netbios protocal in the network properties. Same area where you can find your tcp/ip settitngs. The windows operating system doesn't install this by default (only tcp/ip). Most home networks/routers work better with this installed.

How come my computer just shut off by itself? I think... or maybe it "hybernated" or whatever that is.
but anyway..
I went into the main settings of my wireless on the main computer and it was set to lik "G only" and i know my laptop is a/b/g so i selected "mixed" and also broadcast was DISABLED so i enabled it and now I see my network up in the choices of where i want to connect.
Hopefully it works
ok it worked!! thanks eddie -

Heh lol
I didnt think #1 would work. Normally when people disable broadcast on their router they remember that they did this and should also remember having a hard time setting up their networks becuase they did it. You have the memory of a fish just Like me too. I had the same exact problem many years ago when i started messing with my router security only to forget a while later when i had to add another device. It took me getting a new router to finally figure it out .... -
Ha ha well, I set it up myself (The wireless router) but i didnt know what i was doing really. I just hooked it up and selected anything. lol
But now I know for future times.
im just glad i got my w3v online. This thing is killers(awesome).
Only thing is I accidentally touch the buttons on the sides of it sometimes. last night i accidentally disabled the touchpad and thought my computer was broke. doh
Is it safe to take of these stickers on it or does it leave a sticky substance on the palm rest?
And the stickers im talking about are the ones that say what your laptop is and has. (Not the xp, ati, and centrino logos) -
Yes, you can take the sticker off.
It shouldn't leave any sticky residue...and if it does, that can be taken off with some WD40. -
Geared2play.com Company Representative
wd40 OR if you take off then put on then repeat the proccess many times the sticker it self will absorb back all the sticky residue it left. Kind of like wax on wax off....

ok. thanks
mm i have one more question- i ordered my laptop with 80 gig HD and i have 2 local discs.. a "c" and a "d". does this mean i have two seperate hard drives in my notebook instead of just 1 80 gig?
cos i thought i was getting just 1 80 gig. like an 80 gig C drive or something
is it 2? is this whats making my notebook kind of on the heavy side?(Or maybe i was just expecting this notebook to be way lighter so it feels heavier then it really is. it feels kind of heavier than my dell inspiron 6000) -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
Only one hard disk, in two partitions.
I recommend keeping all your data on D:. If / when you have to reinstall Windows from the recovery CD / files, C: will be overwritten.
As for the extra weight, the chunky battery accounts for some of it and the rest is prabably caused by the very solid construction.
John -
D is too small for everything. But I will keep my more important stuff there. Especially until i get my external HD. thanks for letting me know about that!
Oh btw- I love this screen. I thought I was going to hate the glossy. -
quick question.
if you use the recovery disc, can you reformat it to just one partition in ntsc (rather than have to convert to from fat32). is norton also on the recovery disc.
thanks -
What is this NTFS converter thing on my desktop?
-
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
You can also shrink C: and enlarge D: using partition management software. If you need to reinstall Windows from the recovery partition in the future, the software won't complain if C: is smaller than the original size provided there is enough space to make the installation.
John -
few questions not answered yet.
1. where is the recovery partition.
2 if i use the recovery disc, does that get rid of the recovery partition
3. if i use the recovery disc, can i just set up 1 partition ie hard drive c: only and in ntsc without need to convert
4. is norton's on the recovery disc.
sorry 4 all the questions, thanks -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
2. I don't think that the recovery disc will remove the recovery partition (but this may depending on the selected recovery option - see below).
3. The recovery disc has various options including: Recover Windows to first partition (=wipe C: and reinstall Windows); Recover Windows to entire HD (=wipe everything and make the whole HDD one partition with Windows on it); and Recover Windows to entire HD with two partitions (= wipe everything create new C: (60%) and D: (40%) and install Windows on C:.
4. There is a folder NIS2005 on the drivers CD. I presume that this is Norton Internet Security.
The Asus hardware and software manuals say little about reinstallation of Windows. However, my recovery CD envelope contains two small (CD sized) sheets of instructions between two CDs.
John -
thanks john,
you've cleared up a lot of confusion. as is often the case, we a bit more knowledge, i have more questions.
1. if i wanted to keep the recovery partition and have one other partition (c: rather than c:/d. to achieve this, do i choose the second option?
2. can you choose using either the recovery disk or partition to format the hard drive to ntfs as i noticed the partitions are fat32?
3. i understand the fat32 to ntfs converter makes the ntfs cluster size 512k rather than the more optimal 4Kb. is there a way of setting the cluster size.
4. if i did a full format and wiped the recovery partition, can i still use the recovery disc to partition the entire drive to ntfs with my chosen cluster size 4Kb from the outset?
sorry again for all the questions -
How come there is no external volume control on this thing?
The only way to change the volume up and down is by clicking the little volume icon on the task bar. boo! -
Fn+F11/12 should work to change volume
-
Ah, neat little trick.
Thanks!
I just received my w3v, maybe im dumb..
