As for asus saying the W2j should come with an XGA screen because theres no market in NA for something higher. Check this new sony this thing puts the W2J in its place.

Are my eyes playing tricks or is that a $4000 pricetag on it? I guess it does put the w2j to shame. At only almost double the price i am surprised its not coated in gold. But the hdmi is very impressive. Not too sure about their labeling of the screens. All those names mean nothing to me. But the features of the lappy itself are indeed very new to the market. if i had a few mill in my bank account i would try it. Then again if i had a few mill i would not be browsing forums for laptop advice. I would buy the pretiest and most expensive one.
-
BS Sony extortion - it would really suck to pay that much for BetaMax redux (ie...BlueRay)
EDIT...it is kinda sweet though. -
The screen is incredible, yes, but $4,000?
It only has 1 gig of ram?
Only a nvidia 7600?
Nearly 9 pounds?
Horrid battery life
but yes, probably one of the most impressive screens I have seen, sony does a nice job with them. -
That price is in Canadian dollars. Price in USD would be about a $400 difference, which is still pretty steep.
-
^ How much of that do you think is BlueRay...I'd be willing to bet $500-$800 of the price...
One thing they do do right is video - I recently exchanged a Panasonic LCD/Projection TV sets for one of the Sony ones and I have been pleasantly surprised at the Sony. I'm sure this monitor looks great as well.
I'm just not into gambling on Sony's vision for new media. -
If your read the technical specs for Blue Ray- IE- how they crammed so much information on the disc. They eseentially stripped it of its protective coating and put the ridges under a super thin film. Yes this will add to the amount of data on the disc, but there is a huge problem with it. IT SCRATCHES LIKE NOBODY'S BUSINESS.
If its as bad a decision as it looks, I will never buy Blue Ray. In the early models they had to put the disc in a protective case. But they realized that wouldn't sell, so they are putting their trust in this film to protect the data. HD-DVD sacrifices some data storage to provide an extra layer of protection for their discs. -
Meh. The W2J looks 10 times better. Sony is always overpriced.
My W2JB should be arriving next week
-
sorry to hear that you bought a 17" XGA laptop.
-
^ That's a low blow my man. While I agree it REALLY could use the higher resolution, it's still a bright and vivid screen and good for many (save for graphic designers, prof. photographers...SERIOUS gamers).
Congrats husky - she's a beaut. -
Hey, I'd take anything over an IBM. The boring style that never changes
I do quite a bit of gaming. The screen will be fine. -
It's overpriced in my opinion as a (first) next-generation hardware. It doesn't even include Windows Vista. The thing is running off a 4-year old OS.
Not as sexy as W2j in my opinion. -
Of course the sony is to much money. Blueray as cool as it is adds way to much to the price. But from a technical standpoint its a beautiful machine. I dont think 8.4lbs is that much weight for that type of machine. while the w2j does look nicer they did cram alot in this thing. I would hope for the price it would have the same construction as a w2j but it is sony so i doubt it. But a sony 17in wuxga screen.
-
How would it include vista if its coming out soon?
-
It's touted as "next-generation". I expect more (something very special) for this price point.
-
Like an unreleased OS? That seems slightly unreasonable.
****it, why did the W2J have to get a lower res screen?
-
Why does everyone care so much? The difference is minimal. Go put a WXGA+ next to a WSXGA+. Not much of a difference. Nothing that will adversely affect the use of the laptop.
-
While I dont own an IBM, I agree with you. They do look like sh!t, but their build quality is amazing. You could literally throw it at a wall and you wont even get scratches on it, although I wouldn't be keen to try it. -
I have to disagree. While for reg use for most its not a big difference. To my its night and day. Just looking at pictures alone the increase in sharpness is noticable. But if you do any web design photoshop work 3d graphics work Cad work. Or are a multitasker than yes there is a huge difference XGA will not do. You can not edit photos anywhere near as well on a xga screen try zooming in and see what it looks like. also The W2J is presented as a true multimedia media pc. One prob XGA is not high def. XGA does not have the resolution to present 1080i or 1080P. now if the w2j were 800 cheaper no bigger but the charge a premium so it should have premium components. -
What's the definition of multimedia PC? Tons of laptops are presented as multimedia and they have worse specs than the Asus. I have no idea why they went from WSXGA to WXGA but it's not a big deal to me. I'd much rather do graphics work on my PC anyways.
-
i love sony tvs, thats one sony product i love. they seem to last forever.. well for myself that is. but yea.. 4000 for that lappie. i rather buy 2 w3j, one for each eye
-
I think you may be wrong. I have LCD TV Samsung M51 with WXGA (1366x768) and it CAN display 1080i so the only resolution WXGA can not accept is 1080p.
-
I think sony is good for people who loves brand name and asus is good for people who loves brand name and quality =)
-
Asus makes computer hardware. I'd trust an Asus notebook over a Sony.
-
drool.......
that is a stupidly good laptop.
drools some more..... -
I have the same HDMI connector on my W2Jc. But it's labeled DVI so I uess sound won't be included. Can't test it though, because i don't have anything with a hdmi connector
And the sony doesn't even have a slot-in (sexy) optical disk. So they make a laptop that isn't as good looking as the w2, they put in BR and 540K pixel and the price goes up by $1500.
I'm glad I got my W2 (which has wsxga) -
I think it upconverts from 720p in that case.
-
Ok their are three resolutions for HDTV one is 720p which is your lcd tv and most. it will accept a 1080i signal but it will convert it to 720p. The true HD resolutions though are 1080i and 1080p which is 1920 × 1080. There is a major quality difference between the two. There are some LCDS that support true 1080i but those are few. 1080p is the same resolution as 1080i just in progressive scan. But it will be a while before we see true 1080p content on anything but high def DVDS the bandwidth required is around 3gigabits maybe its 1.5gigabits i forget think its 3 though a second double what cable companys are using for 1080i content.
-
Ok, I agree and it is what I mean : 1080i will be converted to 720p so you can say that it will be displayed in some way. And correct me if I'm wrong but there are 3 HD resolutions : 720p, 1080i and 1080p but ALSO 1080p is called Full HD.
-
^ Full HD is a Sony buzz word...all HD is "Full" or "True" HD
-
1080i is the true HD resolution 1080p is just starting to come out. But most content is 1080i both look great. but yes those are the three resolutions. If you have a 1080i tv set its not worth to dump it for a new 1080p one. There is no 1080p content. Blueray will change that and HD DVD in the future though.
-
From what I understand, the scratching is no longer an issue. The early discs had the problem you mention, but since then they've adopted discs that use a clear polymer coating which is able to withstand scratches from a screwdriver (see this article). I've also read somewhere else (wikipedia?) that there's a newer version of the coating that can withstand steel wool and sandpaper. Given that all Blu-ray discs will have this protection, Blu-ray discs should actually be less prone to scratches than uncoated HD-DVDs.
-
Its funny they have had this super scratch resistent coating for years. Yet have never used it on CDs or DVDs so if they scratch we have to buy new ones.
-
Boooooo SONY~! Overpriced and I bet Asus made it for them~!!!
Hahaha, who knows.
-
maybe asus should promote more of their products. rarely any common people know asus makes laptops.
-
Well looks like there is going to be a version of this thats only 1800 without blueray. So this does turn out to be a better deal than the w2j. but the w2j does look nicer.
-
Have someone noticed that in specs there is GF 7600 GT. Is this just a mistake or Sony has some exlusive GF GPU??
-
sony got their hands on something crazy we don't know about >_>
I know this isnt the place for this But puts w2j to shame.
