Hi folks. I've found that the Asus A8Js is pretty much the perfect lapto pfor my needs, the only one i've found with that much graphics power in a reasonably mobile 14" screen. Unfortunately I live in ireland and am having trouble finding anywhere on the net i can buy it from.

Id like it with 2.13ghz core2 duo and 2g's ram and the 7700geforce.
Ideally also with some sort of upgrade for Vista included, but if not possible ill just cross that bridge when i come to it

Ive tried the asus site, and although it offers distributers in the UK, it doesnt have the A8Js model as an option for the UK section.

Any help in buying this wonderous machine would be greatly appreciated anyway!

    Thanks,
    Rebel

    Hey! :)

Question is do you mind buying overseas?
If not then you could order the A8js and configured it to your taste from Milestonepc.com you can email them and they'll answer all your questions.
    There's also pcportable.com and biotech

I really wish i knew a retailer in UK but i am sure the more experienced members of the forum will direct you even better.

    Hoped my tips helps ;)

P.S. if you decide to order it from here in North America i dont think the shipping is going to take that long

P.P.S. British pound is good currency so buying from Canada or US might good. just my thought... ;)

Thanks very much for your help, i've emailed a number of north american distributors now, so hopefully will get some positive feedback! the shipping might be dear, but its still probably worth it for the value of the machine.

When you consider the european version goes for $500 us dollars more than the north american version I dont the total cost can be anything but cheaper.

Hi, I live in Northern Ireland and ordered A8Js from Portableone. Should be here today according to Fedex (sent on Monday). Only problem was paying, Portableone say that their bank wouldn't accept credit card payment (because of frequent frauds) and I had to pay by international money transfer.

Thats great, thanks! i emailed PortableOne last night asking if they'd be able to add in the 2.33GHz processor and if so thats def the way ill go! The payment is inconvenient alright but hopefully wont cause too much hassle. for the savings im making on buyng anything similer here it seems well worth it.

****. Haven't got it yet. It's stuck on London Stanstedt according to FedEx delivery tracking site. Don't know about the duty, but I've heard that there's no duty on computers from USA, you just have to pay the difference in VAT. Gonna know for sure soon and I'll let you know.

Paid 2500$/1350 quid (bank exchange rates suck!) for T7200 + 2GB RAM + 100GB 7200 HDD + Bluetooth + TrioView LCD. I expect to pay around 250 quid more (VAT).

It wasn't cheap but it is going to be my main rig for next 2-3 years. Looking at A8Js' power and portability I think it was money well spent.

Just phoned FedEx and they told me that my laptop is going to stay in London until I pay 230 quid - as it is near to what I expected it probably means that there's no duty or it is minimal, just the tax. It is possible to pay it by credit card so I'm gonna do it tomorrow.

@Rebel - you should expect to wait quite a long time if you want the TrioView LCD. Portableone has to send the notebook to Mitsubishi factory for that modification. And then almost a week for their modifications and testing. It took over three weeks since they've got the money to send the lappy to me. I warn you because P1 don't have the habit of informing their customers what's going on and I got upset several times. Despite this small flaw I'm satisfied with their service so far. Cheers and good luck!

God **** FedEx UK. Words cannot describe what these bastards are capable of. Laptop arrived at London Stansted on time and the the fun began. It included:
    - shipping it to the wrong address (I called them 3 times to make sure they have the proper address, ech time I was told that everything's OK)
    - singning the papers in my name by some mysterious mr. Wilson at the reception (there is no reception and noone around knows any mr. Wilson)
    - leaving the parcel in unlocked garden tool shed for two days and taking it back without any notification (when I finally managed to track it, just before I got there...)
    - promising to call me back immediately with all the relevant information more than 10 times (at 10 I stopped counting...) - they never did
    - delivering the parcel 8 days after it reached UK not even saying sorry
    - treating me like a retard during all that time, trying to fool me with smooth talk while actually just doing nothing

    Watch out for them.

Just got it, looks quite cheap but decent, screen is nice and tests show very good performance (22000 3DMark01, 10000 3DMark03). Everything seems OK, I like it :)

That seems mad to me - why buy a notebook from a different continent when you can get customised machines from your own country? With a "proper" keyboard config. www.nexus13.co.uk www.asuslaptop.co.uk ?
Also not that I've checked but the Asus international warranties outside of your own region (in the UK) are not carriage paid, where as UK warranties inc. N.Ireland included are?? Have you checked this?

Import payments are always a grey area also.

FYI notebook review readers - The UK is the biggest European territory for Asus and also a bigger territory than the US 'o' A as far as notebook sales are concerned. Maybe this is pious of me to say so after a few beers on a friday night, so for the record.... I'll be here for any UK/Euro guys to point them in the right direction, I'm not bias to any resellers but I am an Asus specialist, that's my job.

This model retails for $500 us more in europe its impossible to beat that. Im pretty sure everyone who bought an a8js from north america saved a lot of money.
