    Hey all,

I want to say Thank YOU to this forum for all the help they gave me over a year and a half ago when I bought my first laptop, an Asus G1s .. I see many of you still here at the forums! /wave

It's been a great laptop, however, I want a larger screen now. Plus, my husband wants this old one to take to the firestation to play his games at work -- Great way for me to get the green light on buying a new laptop! :p

    So the 17" lineup --- M series? G Series?

Question -- Should I wait 3-4 months for something new in the works from Asus yet to be released ?

Or is there a 17" model you would recommend now for me ?

I want to be able to play anything on the gaming market currently.. FPS and MMORG's are what I play. So the most cutting edge graphics card is important and I am not sure what is going to be released in the next few months, so I wanted to ask you guys here.

As always - appreciate all of your laptop Guru-ism!

If you're looking for a notebook with the latest graphics cards with the best performance then check out the Sager np5797 notebook. This model will feature the 9800m GTX which is currently the fastest GPU on the market. It also has DDR3 1066MHz memory which works well with the new montevina processors which have a 1066MHz FSB.

If you'd like to stay with the Asus brand notebooks then the Asus G71G-Q1, G71G-A1, or G71G-A2 would be your best choice. These will have a 9800m GS with 6GB DDR2 800MHz memory and the montevina processors as well.

For the time being, DDR3 (especially the 1066mhz) are not much of an upgrade over DDR2 800mhz due to the extremely high latencies on the DDR3.
If you can wait for another 2-3 months, I'd say the Asus W90 would be nice option, but as for now, the G71G would be the best bang for buck 17" laptop.

If you want to stick with Asus you can wait for the Asus W90 17". Though it's only a 17" in an 18.4" 'shell'. If you want a standard 17" Asus gaming laptop consider the G71G series. Though, I'd probably get a Sager if I were in your position. More power.

Thank you for all the replies.

Asus W90 -- Thanks so much for the information on this upcoming model.. I definitely can wait a few months and it gives me time to store some cash so the hubby doesn't know how much it will actually cost.. lol... I'm thinking it'll be $2200 or so... The G71G is about what, $1850 at newegg now?

Regarding Sager - That is a brand I considered and actually had to cancel the order for before I bought the G1s,,, There were some delays in parts coming out at that time and the particular model compal/sager wasn't going to be available in time for the college term that was starting -- so I went with Asus..

I'll go look at the Sagers, because it's always good to be informed about comparable options ..The Asus warranty is so good and no dead pixel policy is assuring.. I don't remember the Sager policies offhand.
I'd like to see benchmarks between the Sager and Asus models to decide how much a power trade off vs. price and all.. It's never an easy decision!

The Asus G71G-A1 is currently $1,799.00 at Xotic PC with a $100 Asus mail in rebate. The A2 version starts at $1,929.00 also with a $100 Asus mail in rebate.

The Sager's will generally outperform the Asus in terms of graphics performance, but the standard warranty coverage will be better on an Asus. :)
