    Dear all,

If you are lucky enough to have either an A8Js, A8Jp or A8Jr, I would be very grateful if you can use CPU-Z to make an HTML dump, and then copy and paste it here.

To make a dump, go to the "About" tab and click on "HTML Dump (.htm)" button.

This should help my project on modifying the A8Ja (and maybe A8Jm as well) BIOS, so that it can use Merom CPUs.

    Thanks in advance!

That is not the case for A8Ja, A8Jc and A8Jm. I know this because I'm already on their latest BIOS for A8Ja. This is why I need the dump from supported systems.

no idea about others but i can speak on behalf of the a8js and a8jm as we have done all the mods that are possible (bluetooth mainly). A8js is identical to a8jm with one exception, the video card. I have never tried to put the a8js video card into the a8jm but i can tell you both are identical in form. Theoretically if you can force flash the bios of a a8jm with an a8js bios rom it should work but dont quote me on that.

But doesn't the A8Js use SATA whereas the A8Jm uses PATA?

This is why I want to look at the dumps to see what differences there are, before attempting force-flash.

Whilst on the topic, how does one do force flash with AMI BIOSes?

i honestly dont recall. a8jm was not a huge seller for us. A8js was the boimshell. We sold more of it then any other in recent years. We were the first to come out with the bluetooth hack/mod. Still selling the bt module and cable to this day over a year after it is end of life. the video made it possible for any joe to mod their a8j. My self and portableone were the only ones to figure it out. eventually asus cought on and made bt standard on all models after we sold a few hundred modded units and modules.

I'm surprised that A8Js did not come with Bluetooth for you guys (great opportunity for you too). In Hong Kong ALL of the A8J models came with Bluetooth as far as I know. How interesting.

I'm certain that A8Jm is PATA as well, so it is not identical to A8Js. However, A8Jm and A8Ja are definitely identical that way apart from the graphics card, but the question is what about the voltage for the PCI express slot? Is it standardised across all laptops?

    no this is false

    a8jm has ide hd interface

    it has a different resolution

    the bios are not compatible.

The video card may be though.

no a8jm owner has ever put a merom cpu in his machine because there is no bios.

Do you know of anyone who has done so? Some people claim that even though the form factor may be similar, the voltage supply may be incompatible or something like that?

Bad idea to cross-flash. Sometimes it might work, but there might be things which were changed which aren't reflected in the newer/older models. Also, the VBIOS is contained in the flash, meaning that if you tried to cross-flash a model with a different video card, your system most likely would stop working (or you would be able to use it if you could work blind).

As far as I recall, the support for Merom was merely a microcode thing in the BIOS. However, the motherboard had to have some minimum support as well. I vaguely remember some Quanta barebones released before Merom explicitly said they wouldn't be providing a firmware for it when their other barebones did, citing hardware compatibility problems.

AFAIK, the older T7xxx are going discontinued, and the T2xxx are not that much worse off than a T5xxxx. If you need more power, you should probably be thinking about a desktop or a newer Santa Rosa-based laptop.

Already tried adding the CPU microcode to the current BIOS, didn't work.

This is not mainly about needing extra power but just a fun project to do. Plus if I were to get a new laptop, it would have to be a "Centrino 2" one.

Well, it would be easy for ASUS to do it. But if they didn't, it must be like the other unit I saw where there was some sort of minimum support which was missing. Maybe they used a voltage regulator or some other unit which was supported on the older one but not on the newer one because of more steps or something?

Intel seems to have a list for which company each OEM should be buying parts from: http://www.intel.com/design/core2duo/components/index.htm

too big a hassle right now the laptop is not opn the internet.

if youre still stuck i will do it eventually.

as far as the video card

it is using the mxm format so the bios is on the card.

So in theory the card should go in the a8jm or the reverse.

Yes thats true it could need more juice or something. Cant really see why anyone would know without trying.
