I have an Asus that is dead and will be sent into Asus for repairs. However, I desperately need to boot the HD that is currently in it. I tried to boot it up with a Dell notebook that I have, but the Dell is giving me a boot error as if the HD is not recognizable. Is this normal?
Will it work to get one of them 2.5" to 3.5" HD adapters for my desktop and simply boot it up with my desktop? I mostly need to access the outlook information/email on it.
Simply put, I can not wait until I get the notebook back from repair before I get some information of this HD.
Thanks in advance

What leads you to say that the notebook is dead, how can you be so sure that It's actually not the hard drive itself? That might explain things...If you're 100% sure It's something else and that the hard drive is fine, then I guess that's step one...let us know why you think/know the Asus is "dead" or in need or repairs, then we'll go from there...
What are the specs on the dell? It won't work without the right drivers and O/S etc. I don't think -
if you removed your HDD and slapped it in a Dell and tried to boot it, this will not work.
if you want information the best thing to do is buy a 2.5'' HDD enclosure they are quite cheap, and run on a USB connection, I have two IBM cases and three Argosy cases (Argosy I found more reliable and faster than the IBM and only takes 1xUSB port and is self (bus) powered), available from Amazon for 19 USD.
Then All you need to do is plug it onto any USB port on a computer and it will appear as a removable drive, where you simply browse and copy what you need... simple -
Trust me it works.. I have done it before, and for retrieving email info if you are using Outlook, browse to this location for the outlook.pst file
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
and for outlook express look for the .dbx files
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{EFDCF170-BADB-43F0-9A35-5C6C69B4397D}\Microsoft\Outlook Express
then in outlook, or oulook express from any computer import the pst or dbx files and it will open all of the messages in that email program. -

If he/she doesn't have time to wait for repairs, then they might not have time to wait for Amazon to ship an external HDD enclosure to get the best deal...I'm just kidding, that's the best option...if you can find a good deal locally.
So you could try that, but first things first, are you 100% sure It's not the Hard drive that's the problem? I know It sounds dumb, but sometime's It turns out to be that way...
If the drive is fine, then the best way to get at it in a hurry is like NZ has suggested, by making it into an external drive accessable via USB on pretty much any other computer or laptop...or Firewire If you prefer. Good luck -
Also, most computer shops sell HDD enclosures for laptop HDD's now days, so if you are in a hurry you could buy one straight away, I just personally like the Argosy HD260, it is solid, bus powered and got good reviews.
I need to boot hard drive from my Asus - wont work in Dell...use desktop?
