Sent back my GS1 today, talked with ASUS, and it seems there is no way to get the speakers louder. I'm sorry but even with the speakers at max I couldn't barely hear anything. It was a great looking laptop and ran stuff amazing fast. I can deal with bad sound but I can't deal with low sound. Luckily buy.com was nice not to charge me a restocking fee.

You know, I've never heard really good, loud sound from any notebook speakers. Admittedly, I haven't listened to a huge number, but enough to think that most laptop speakers are pretty sorry. From what I've read, the GS1 is an excellent machine. Hope later on you won't regret sending it back.

Why didn't you just get a set of speakers for home and a decent set of headphones for the road?

    You're kidding, right?

Get a pair of $35 Sony in-ear-canal earbuds, they sound great.

Also, for external speakers and headphones, you could even invest in a Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Xtreme Notebook Expresscard, or a USB sound card...

These are the ones I have. They are awesome. I took back 4 different pairs before I got these and I love them. They have great highs, mids and lows. I would expect sound like this from Bose...

Damn, my earphones are from Bose. Looks like I could have saved a lot of money if such great sound is available from $35 earbuds.  Oh, well . . . lol

I have the MDREX51s, which are now discontinued.

The still sound great though. Well balanced, good bass, etc. I use them with my Creative Zen MP3 player and my laptop.

I've had 4 laptops prior to this one and all of them had louder (maybe not better) sound. Even my dell E1405 at 75% volume was almost twice as loud as the laptop. I don't want to be forced to use speakers or plug in earphones when using my laptop.

For that price, get the Sony EX85 -- the non-aluminum version of Sony EX90. Best in-hear headphone for $50.

Well, the G1S is marketed to gamers, and any serious gamer will tell you that absolutely NO notebook speakers are better than having externals or a good headset. Asus realised that (I believe) all mobile gamers have externals and headsets already, so why drive up the price with nicer speakers? They won't use them. I know I wouldn't, not even for my in-coming C90, I don't care if they are made by Bose (well....maybe if they are made by Bose, but they aren't so there), I won't use them ever in place of external speakers. I am getting so seriously tired of people bashing the G1S for poor speakers when, if they are gamers willing to spend 2000 dollars on a laptop, they should have proper sound equipment already.

I don't really agree. There are many laptops out there for 2000 dollars. I bet you anything all the other laptops with the 8600M GT or higher will end up having much better speakers.

    Some people don't game 24 hours a day.....Like me.

I like to take my laptop on the porch and listen to music with friends some time. This one, you can't do that....nobody can hear anything...lol.

Doesn't the Dell XPS M1710 have subwoofers? Then the speaker system must be pretty powerful.

judging from the previous posts, i believe notebook users vary on their opinions regarding the importance of sound quality in a laptop.

in my opinion, the sound quality of the laptop's speakers don't matter at all. sound was never something i was looking for in my notebook; however, i am a pretty ardent audiophile when it comes to external speakers, whether it be my philips 1000 watt home theater system or my logitech z4 2.1 computer speakers.

once i move out, i plan on selling my current speakers and picking up the logitech z-5300 5.1 speakers to use with my g1s at college. not to mention a logitech g15 keyboard and samsung 206bw 20" lcd monitor. but, alas, i'm going to have to wait on a few more paychecks for those items.

basically, what i'm getting to, is the asus g1s isn't necessarily designed with amazing speakers on the go in mind. the notebook is geared to the average pc gamer, and i think the average pc gamer doesn't care about the quality of the notebook speakers themselves, but the notebook's ability to play the hottest games out now with ease while maintaining a slick, if overly gaudy, gaming look. like alex put it earlier, if you're willing to shell out $2000 for a gaming 15" notebook (not 17" mind you), spring for a really nice set of sony earbuds and/or external speakers. no notebook speakers, even if they do include dell's pointless subwoofer can match their sound quality.

if you're looking for great notebook speakers, i think a multimedia notebook geared for watching dvds in audaciously high resolution settings is for you i.e. compaq/hp, dell, or sony. i think asus knows most gamers will want the g1s to be able to play modern games smoothly on the go, but if you want it as your primary multimedia center, you surely must pick up some decent computer speakers at the least.

would i love it if asus improved on their speakers in the g1s? i sure wouldn't mind it. but i think there are so many great attributes of the notebook that outweigh poor speakers. the only thing i can see being a problem with it is the four usb outlets being in the back, crammed together. that results in declined efficiency.

    my two cents. :)
