Heya all, My V1s will be here by the end of the week and I agreed to write a review with NBR's Mod Andrew for the frontpage, I want to make it as comprehensive as possible so please let me know what aspects you want me to focus on, Ill do a range of battery tests, Graphics and overclocking performance, Tests with and without Turbo Cache, Esata performance tests, Screen comparisons, size comparisons. Is there anything Im missing? Ill be posting my XP Driver pack around the same time.

Thank you that you told me....
This review seems comprehensive, so see if you can write something similar...

I just wanted to post the link to my review here...
Thanks Dreamer you were first
I think the notebookcheck.com does the best reviews out there, that's why I also release my reviews there. -
I've already ordered mine, but it would be interesting to see the whole bundle, so I would know what I had to order seperatly.
My retailer first listed it Aug. 11th, then the 16th and now 25th. Some retailers have listed it confirmed by Sep. 6th, but I want to have it when I go away from 6th to 8th of September. -
Yes but its in german, not exactly easily readable, nor would most users be checking German sites. Its also based on the German model (Matte screen no Turbo cache).
-
That's why a lot of users would certainly appreciate it if you wrote one in English
What I wanted to show is the structure of my review which is the structure of notebookcheck.com's reviews and it's the best way to write one I think. -
-shrugs- Ive written three reviews for the website before (Sony FE590, Dell 1520, And Sabrent Sata Expresscard) And I've written several guides.
-
Sorry that i have to ask this --- but what does -shrugs- mean?
Don't beat me --- -
That's an australian dialect... you'll never understand it...
Uh, I lied. -
- means action, If something is surrounded by - it means an action. Shrugging is the act of lifting ones shoulders lightly up and down.
Lie? From an American! How shocking!!-joke-
-
Oh! now it comes to my mind again... i knew this word
-
I asked to do a V2S review and Andrew showed me the typical format for reviews here. I think that as long as you stick to the stuff the template asks for you'll be fine.
-
I know how to write a review
Its more that people always want to know weird stuff like wether the notebooks feet are 1mm high or 2mm high, how it performs in -generic benchmarking software- So I thought I would ask first.
-
Just do a normal, detailed review. People always want to know more, we can answer their questions afterwards and if there are any important things you can add them to your review later.
-
a fair unbiased review is always good but quite hard to find most of the time.
-
I'm most interested in some ways of illustrating its realistic battery life in real life usage (be it gaming, only word processing, or just internet, etc.).
-
I wrote a lot about battery life in my review: http://www.notebookcheck.com/forum/index.php/topic,7587.0.html
-
I am looking now between the G1s and the V1s because it looks like the IFL 90 isn't going to make it to me in the time I need it. I know it's probably here on the forums somewhere, but could you guys give me a comparison of the G1s vs. V1s. What are the most distinguishing factors and do you think the V1s will be a better quality lappy than the G1s. I'm not going to be gaming hardcore on either machine. Thanks -
V1S:
- better looking
- business features
- better (WSXGA+) Display
- doesn't get that hot
G1S:
- better graphics
Build quality should mainly be the same.
I'm going to London in two days, if I feel the need to improve my English I will start translating my review
Someone here in the forum already did so using an online translator. Just try searching yourself. In fact, it is a very bad translation -
I have the Modular battery to, So I can do battery tests that Maati could not.
-
Oh please do that! I'm planning to get the modular battery, too. And I will be getting the frame for a modular hard drive and the casing for a 2,5" eSATA hard drive.
-
I thought about getting the 2nd HD draw but decided I couldnt really think of a scenario where I would regularly be using it, I would rather use the E-Sata port with a big cheap 3.5" while at home, Or my 120gb 2.5" USB HD that I use to move files around.
-
I got two big cheap 3,5" at home
1,2TB in total.
I ordered a Seagate Momentus 7200.2 for my V1S but it did't arrive in time so I ordered a Samsung HM250JI and next week I'll have them both.
I don't want to send one of them back because I cannot decide which one to keep (pretty fast 250GB Samsung or very fast 160GB Seagate). So I'll keep them both and use the 250GB Samsung as external eSATA storage. It's pretty cool to have 250GB of storage that can easily be put in my jacket!
I'll put CD/DVD images on it so that I can leave my DVD drive at home and take the HDD in my modular bay. -
It would be nice to know the battery life with WLAN on, but with powersaver mode on with medium brightness, but I'm guessing that you would already do that.
And I think it's nice that you're adding the battery test with the modular battery since I really want to see how much life that will add since I might get it. -
CalebSchmerge Woof NBR Reviewer
Will you test for the Asus battery wear problem? PM me if you are willing. Thanks.
-
Definitely a comprehensive guide of battery life with the modular battery would be good. 14 cells of goodness
I can't wait to get mine! -
Could you try doing battery testing with the turbo memory off, than the same test with it on? This thread talks about how turbo memory can actually improve battary life.
Tx! -
Hey matt_h1,
I'm also from Aust, would you mind telling how much you paid for the V1s in $AUD altogether including shipping costs & currency conversion etc??
Cheers -
I think if you pay now, it will be a lot more than what would have been a week ago, due to the huge drop in AUD
-
matt_h1, I have followed the Asus V1s launching here in the forum since weeks ago and you always was in many threads clarifying and giving very nice opinions, I thank you for that and all the other forum users!
and its very sure you and others here helped me to finally decide myself to purchase an V1s...the problem is where because I'm in Spain but SADLY here Asus will launch the 1440" resolution WXGA+ not the WSXGA+, shame for ASUS Spain here (they haven't already showed the V1s model in therir spanish website)!! Why they leave spanish market only with the WXGA+ model? I don't understand. That's the why I have to search for the WSXGA+ model outside spain. I think my options are very narrow betwenn France (mmh...but I don't really want an AZERTY Keyboard) and USA...Any online USA Store there can sell me an Asus V1S with a Spanish keyboard? That would be nice!
-
Preloz, You can swap the keyboards out very easily and ExcaliberPC ships overseas.
I pad almost exactly $2600 AUD (Modular battery + Shipping to Aus + Insurance + $50 customs fee + $200 Customs (10%) I waited a bit to long and the dollar went from 88c down to 85, Glad I didnt wait any longer though, Its down to 78c now.
You can buy it in Aus for $2500 but you only get the 2.0ghz CPU but you do get Vista Ultimate, Given the huge drop in our currency I would recommend that.
I dont think I will be doing a battery wear test as I dont want to waste 20 cycles of a brand new battery. I will do tests with and without Turbo Memory, I plan to keep TM turned off under general use so I will only have one or two battery tests with it on. I will go through a few cycles of my battery doing the tests so I will check the starting mWh to see if it changes.
The problem with E-Sata is there isnt a powersource so you still need to have it plugged into USB to provide power. I plan on using the Modular battery on my long days and the CD drives on shorter ones (Im a uni student) -
To the guy that needed a spanish keyboard http://www.notebook.de/index.php?section=shop&group=522&productid=7889
The "Tastatur" is the keyboard (pick ur poison from the dropdown).. -
Yeah Matt, I know that I can swap the keyboard very easily but the problem is to find the Spanish Keyboard for the V1s model because it have to be propietary. In Germany there are online stores ( www.notebook.de) where you can purchase the V1s and there is an option to buy the laptop with any foreign keyboard you ask (spanish among them), they swap it for you. The problem is that the German V1s model called V1S-AJ016 its "Anti-Glare" and T7300 so its not an option for me, I want it "shine" not "mate" display. It would be very nice finding an online store in USA offering to purchase the V1s with Keyboard swapping like an option. I will email USA stores asking if they can do for me because I want to avoid the hassle to ask the keyboard myself in Asus Spain. I plan to purchase it with dockstation, HD modular bay and modular battery too.
-
Thanks Hunningolla, as I was writing my previous post you have written yours, jeje. Anyway I don't like German model I like the USA V1S like I've previously said and explained why.
-
What is the 'modular battery' and modular HD bay? - I'm looking at getting one, but have no idea what these two components are :O
-
The V1s has magnesuim alloy lid, carbon fibre case and spill-free keyboard, also hot swappable module bay and it's a bit smaller/lighter, and should have better battery life.
The G1s is mainly plastic with some anodized aluminum on the palm rest.
And, the US V1s and G1s have the same glossy screens. -
Here in Germany the G1S has a very bad WXGA+ Screen, the V1S has a beautiful matte WSXGA+ screen.
Material quality of the V1S is very good as you said, but build quality is another aspect. The V1S makes noises when you bend the chassis and you can easily push parts of the chassis down but it doesn't bother me. -
True, the previous V1Jp suffered from some quality issues:
From the Asus V1Jp's review
-
To perloz, Just contact your countries Asus spare parts line, they will be able to send you your keyboard.
-
@Dreamer
Yes, it is exactly the same. The lid has very little flex in my opinion but the wrist pad has a lot.
The materials are very good however. -
So it seems Asus hasn't changed anything, which is a little disappointing but something that I expected.
Yeah, I know about the materials, a friend of mine has the V1Jp...
Anyway, thanks for the info. -
How are the speakers on the V1s?
Specifically compared to the G1s?
I've been trying to decide between the two and this is a sticking point for me. Headphones and exterior speakers won't work for me all the time and the G1s is supposed to have horrible speakers. I like the build of the V1s better but I need MCE so I would have to buy Vista Home Premium or Ultimate and I'm trying to justify the extra money. -
-
-
Yes it would, The keyboards are a standard part, just ring your countries asus parts line and ask for a replacement keyboard.
-
I know that there are going to be pros and cons to any laptop no matter what brand, but what then has you guys looking at the V1s over the Compal/Sager IFL 90? What makes you want the Asus more?
-
It has the same cons (the chassis) but more pros (the equipment).
However, one con compared to the IFL90 is that it has no upgradeable (MXM, but not standard MXM) video card.
It's a hard decision. I could also have taken the IFL90, Nexoc also has it with WSXGA+ screen but the one from Asus I think is a bit brighter. -
If I had to choose between the IFL90 and V1s, I would go for the V1s anyday.
Things against Compal:
- Design (the designer was drunk, ok subjective)
- Keyboard (nice flex but I'm not a huge fan of that) and it's not spill-free
- Battery (Sorry, I can't stand stiking out batteries)
- Heavier, no media bay, so you can't remove the DVD
- Matte WSXGA+ Screen (not a problem but Asus has a great screen, one of the best out there)
- No high quality materials...wait Compal isn't even a business-class..err why do I even bother to write that...
- Other reasons might be: the secutity chip and the docking station option
All in all, why should I buy Compal? because it's cheap - sorry not a reason for me, or because of the fairy tale about the second largest...anyway I don't buy that. Sorry
And, yes I have seen Compals, the HEL80 in praticular and I didn't like it too.
Not to start a flame war but it's not a problem anyway. -
Did you already have the V1J or V1S? Build quality isn't really great. It makes a lot of krrrrrrzzz noises everywhere. The materials however are very good.
The sticking out battery adds a lot of extra lifetime which I am missing on my V1S. I wish I had that option, too.
The matte WSXGA+ screen is lovely but the matte Asus WSXGA+ screen is better.
In all of your other points I totaly agree. -
I will be writing a Review of the V1s
