No, I'm not gonna buy it for me...
Yes, as I said I have used the V1Jp and I know about the quality issues, the reason that I'm looking at V1s now is that I have to buy it for a girl who is just in love with the design and she doesn't want to hear about anything else... /end of my rant
Otherwise, I haven't seen the matter screen but the glossy one is excellent, imho.
And, I have said that before but the V1 isn't a true business-class notebook it's rather a consumer one made of good materials and offers more features, sorry I wish Asus had put more effords.... Obviously, they have so much to learn before they make something that can come at least close to ThinkPads, HPs or Latitudes.
-
The matte screen is... wonderful!
I don't care about those quality issues, it's ok. The only thing tha shocked me was when I saw a review of the HP 8510w............ -
Sure but some people want to see their reflection all the time.
No, I like matte too, I'm writing on matte now...what's that...erm... T60 WSXGA+ and it's pretty good...it's not mine anyway. -
I didn't think that I needed a matte screen, I just took the V1S because of its WSXGA+ panel.
But now I love it... really!
It's just as bright as a good reflecting screen and its colors and contrast are beautiful.
I can only recommend the V1S to all those who want a good screen. Whether it is reflecting or not: It's top! -
IFL90 get 3.5+ with the 9 cell....
And, the idea is that a 8/9 cell battery should not stick out but the designers are just idiots...
On the other hand, the 8710w is the best built 17" out there so...dunno. -
V1s
Glossy screen (1680x1050)
rotating/swivel web camera (1.3 mega pixel)
HDMI and VGA port
spill proof keyboard
lighter (5.9 lbs)
swapable module bay (DVD, Hard Drive, or battery)
ensaemble notebook (more costly & difficult to change the default config)
NP2090
Matte screen (1680x1050)
web camera (2 mega pixel) (more MP, but does not rotate)
VGA Out (no DVI or HDMI option)
6.6-6.9 lbs (depending on battery type)
cheaper to change the default configuration
Two OS's 64-bit and 32 bit (on the NP2090 not the IFL90)
cheaper when the same compnents are selected for a system (ex: CPU, HD, Robson, Memory, OS, and warrenty length set identical to V1s defaults)
with regards to Dreamer's postabout the design on the IFL90/NP2090 being weaker I don't know if I'd agree with that statement. According bove and matti's posts on http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=156705&page=7 installation of an ExpressCard 54 will block some of the ports on the V1s.
I like the rotating camera and glossy screen of the v1s, but I also like the two OS and cheaper price of the 2090 (the 2090 is also rumored to have a glossy 1680x1050 option in the future). I'm still unsure which (if either) I might purchase. Based on reviews, user feedback on this fourm, and discussion with a handful of the resellers both systems are very well built, with strong software/drivers, and both are supported and backed strongly by the manufacturers and resellers. There is no clear and difinitive winner between the two which makes it all the more difficult and confusing to pick one over the other. -
I read it... besides the faults that HP made, the power of the QFX 570M in the HP 8510w is horrible!
But it's also 800$ more than the V1S. So it is not interesting to me anyways. There is also the Lenovo T61p with that QFX 570M. But I'm content with my Asus.
The IFL90 has 4h 50min of maximum battery life, the V1S only reaches 3h 38min.
This is due to the sticking out battery.
The V1S battery also has 8 cells but these cells do not have a high capacity. Only 650mAh per cell. Normal battery cells have 800mAh. I can't understand this.
The Idea of reaching a maximum of 6h with the modular battery however is great. But there is no DVD drive anymore.
EDIT: The V1S also has an eSATA port which the IFL90 does not! -
@Avid Gamer:
Btw, the Asus V1s is 6.5 lbs., it's 5.9 Travel Weight (without the DVD).
the 8510p is reasonably priced... -
The V1S is exactly 6.6lbs
which means 3.0kg.
-
It's 6.5 when you wipe the dust off...lol
-
You CAN get 4h 50min. Turning display brightness down at minimum processor speed.
With the Asus V1S you CAN get 3h 38min. Again turning display brightness down at minimum processor speed.
The difference in battery life is exactly the difference in battery capacity: 4h 50min to 3h 38min which is the same as 7200mAh to 5200mAh. -
It should be usable at the end....otherwise, you can switch off the display at all.
Half brightness and doing regular stuff (Internet, office apps) you get about 3.5h..that's it with Compal. -
You're right. But half brightness and doing regular stuff you will only get about 2h 35min with the Asus. Read my test. The difference remains the same.
The only question is whether you would accept a sticking out battery for more battery life or not.
With the IFL90 you got the choice. That is its big advantage.
But with the Asus V1S you also got the choice: More battery life (even more than with the IFL90!) or DVD drive.
So none of them really has an advantage over the other. It just depends on what you like best. -
That's another thing that I like about the HPs, they have 8 cell batteries, which don't stick out and you can get 3.5h.. also the wieght is only 6.1 lbs.
Otherwise, I can always carry another 6 cell battery (2 x 6 instead of 1 x 9), as I do when I use a ThinkPad or a Latitude at work... that's how I sort out this problem. -
I wonder why the battery cells of the V1S have only 650mAh. It is an 8-cell battery, too, but it only has 5200mAh. I think this could be because of the high Voltage of 14.8V. The Dell Inspiron for example only uses 11.1V.
Perhaps we could put some better cells in
I'm going to London tomorrow. Together with my brand new Asus V1S.
So I got to sleep now. So long... you all have fun with you V1S!
Looky here: http://www.notebookcheck.com/User-Test-Asus-V1S-Notebook.4345.0.html This is my new darling... -
Yeah, I will read that review carefully later... and I think I learned german in school...
Gute Nacht. -
Thank you. Good night!
BTW, someone in this forum already translated it using an online translator. However, the tranlation was very bad... lol! -
Lithium Ion cells provide 3.7V. Each cell is not providing 650mAH, but rather 2600mAH at 3.7V. A row of 4 in series then provides 2600mAH at 14.8V, and 2 sets of 4 in parallel ups that to 5200mAH. The 6 and 9 cell batteries would be providing a lower voltage because they are 2 or 3 parallel sets of 3 cells in series respectively. If using the same cells as in the V1S battery, one would expect a 9 cell to provide 7800mAH at 11.1V. In terms of total energy, the 14.8V battery with 5200mAH gives 77WHr, and a 11.1V battery with 7200mAH gives 80WHR, so they are basically the same total energy, and in fact the 8 cell would have more energy per cell than the 9 cell.
-
Hmm You might need a different OS, You might just be able to change the language option to your language, I know you would have to change the keyboard layout in your OS software (Control Panel > Regional and Language options > Languages > Details > Add > Spanish)
-
Well seeing how overpriced the thing is here I'm going to buy it from somewhere else, so I'll just have to test that one out then..
-
@buckX
Yes, these were all of my thoughts. But why can an Inspiron last more than 6h with 85Whr and a V1S only 3.5h with 77Whr?
This would mean that the Inspiron only needs 14W! I can't belive this and, according to Dells service manuals, it needs a minimum of 19W.
So, why? Where is the fault? -
In aus you can get a 9cell battery for the v1 series, not sure what the tech specs of it are as the cells would have to be arranged differently.

your assu v1s review is in German, how can I read that? hahahha
-
Greetings from London!
So, you got several possibilities: The first one is to learn German. Another one would be to use an online translator. If you can't stand bad online translations you still got the possibility to ask someone who already learned to speak German
Matt, could you please give us a link where to buy the 9-cell battery? -

Its about $70 more than the 8 cell battery -
My V1S just shipped today, Fed-ex ground, hopefully it'll be here by Thursday, maybe I can write a small review and throw in some pics.
Never have before, but could be fun! -
matt_h1, how is it going with your V1s review?
-
-
Nope, Rang customs today to see if they received my forms, They lost one and I had to resend it, Wonder how long it would have taken them to tell me that if I hadnt asked...
-
Have people benched the Dell at 6.5 hours, or is that the official battery eater based estimate. Those after all are always hopelessly optimistic. A lot of other factors can effect battery life as well. What the GPU is clocked at matters, and software can make a big difference. For example, if you install XP on the V1S, I would not be at all surprised to see the battery life hop up about half an hour.
-
Mine's on order from powernotebooks.com btw. ETA is by this weekend. -
Which Dell BuckX? I know their 1520 got 4.5 hours with the 9 cell, and that was with brightness at a minimum, Wifi off, and doing light typing.
-
I'm not sure which Dell, I'm just replying to maati's post about an inspiron with over 6 hours of life. My first thought was that he was referring to the 1520, but I didn't think it got anywhere near that much, thus my skepticism. Also, I am planning on putting XP pro on my V1S when I get it, so I'll post PCMark, 3Dmark and battery results with that, and see if it does better than with Vista.
-
As has been said a few times in this thread liquidinfo, I will release a XP driver pack. My CC cleared at customs today and should be here by Friday, Shame they dont let you go and pick it up anymore I would have gotten it by now if I could. Btw BuckX GenPC (ken lee) already posted PCMark, 3DMark and I think he did battery tests to.
-
With XP installed? Cool, which thread is that in?
-
Not sure on if it was XP or Vista, If you look in the Asus Forums the topic is called "V1s pics and benchmarks" I think.
I will be writing a Review of the V1s
