I hope this isn't a stupid post, but I'm just wondering what you guys think of the new machine. What is newer about this model than the previous G1? I have been wanting this machine for a while now but I have been waiting for the Santa Rosa refresh. I would like this notebook to also be a desktop replacement. My desktop at home is a Pentium 4 1.6 GHZ, 256MB RAM, ATI 128 Pro graphics card (32MB card) and a 40 gig hard drive. I have a flat screen LCD I'd say a 15" give or take. I was wondering how much performance increase would I have over my current desktop? I would like a realistic answer. I'm not the smartest when it comes to computers keep in mind but I have been learning a lot from reading here.

Also are there any cool features that I may not know about with this laptop?

    Thanks

What is exactly your GPU ? There are many ATI 128MB pro GPUs.

The bag, the mouse and the touchpad design are the coolest things IMO.
EDIT : Add the screen to the list.

That sounds pretty good, do you have any charts like that that can compare the card the new G1S has compared the my desktop GPU?

The gap between the GPUs is HUGE
    This is some comparison :
    512MB GDDR3 vs 32MB SDRAM
    Clocks : 125/143 vs (600/1200 GT) or (475/950 GS)
Pixel Fill Rate : 250 vs (7800 GT) or (4800 GS)
    DX 6 vs DX10
    OGL 1.0 vs 2.1
I think you get the picture now ;)

I understand some of this, the numbers are is what's confusing me. I really appreciate you getting this information for me and all. So there's a huge difference the new card is 10X better? I feel like an idiot haha. What about the processor and overall performance of my machine now compared to the new machine. How does the Centrino Duo compare to the Pentium 4? Thanks for the help.

Comparing the performance between those systems especially with the graphics card is like comparing the 1967 Volkswagen Beetle and 2006 Porsche Boxter.. The Boxter is not the best but still generations ahead of the VW...

Dont let me get started on the processor.. :p

Aside from the jokes, there would be a huge performance boost when goin from the P4 to the Core 2 Duo particularly with the new architecture and using the latest games, software and Vista.. :)

Core 2 Duo (thats the CPU in the G1s) is about (0% faster then the Pentium 4 if you compare the core speed alone.

So a 2,0GHZ Core 2 Duo like you are getting is about as fast as a Pentium 4 3,6GHZ.

Ofcourse the Core 2 Duo is dual core which means it is like 2 CPUs working together. So it is like two 3,6Ghz Pentium 4s working together.

Both the new CPU and the graphics card will blow your old stuff away. We are talking more then 3-4 times as fast for the CPU and hardly comparable for the graphics card.

Trust us, you will see a SIGNIFICANT performance boost, you will notice it and it will blow your desktop away.

    Actually, no.

The CPU will blow away the desktop CPU, as well. There are significant differences in architecture and the cache size is also vastly important. My Pentium M on the M6Ne is running 20 to 30% faster through tasks than my work desktop Pentium 4 3GHz. My Core Duo is 30% faster (on a single core) than the Pentium M due again to architecture and cache size differences. Core 2 Duos are again 30% faster than Core Duos.

So I estimate a difference in speed of about 100%, i.e. your laptop should process CPU tasks twice faster than the desktop.

Would that be the same way if you're coming from say, an Athlon 64 3800 and a 7800GT with 2GB of ram? I'm trying to step on to a new notebook which has better graphics than my desktop system which runs on a 7800GT.

Overall I think a G1s will perform better, but in graphics I think the difference won't be that big.

your in for such a treat with that thing

you can easily expect a number of times faster....esepecially in the GPU depeartment. thats a hell of a jump btw, DX6/7 all the way to fully programmable and unified shaders with full DX10 compliance....it'll be night and day.

id expect up to 3 hours out of it on general use, little bit little bit less. and quite a dip if gaming and using the brightest back light settings.

theres always a trade off but i would think that machine would last as long as that old one you have

    Ya you will trip out.

You dont even realize how much of your time is beiing wasted while the cpu is thinking about doing something.

As far as I know the t7200 is like a pentium 3.8 ghz

Only it has the potential to be two pentium 4 3.8 ghz. Totally unrealized potential

In my practice I think of it like this, there is a pentium 4 3.8 ghz for cpu intensive task like dvd burning or movie encoding.

IF you can get one task to work on that cpu, you actually have another cpu for a non cpu intensive task like browsing the internet. I think of it like more in the p4 1 ghz variety because it uses the same buss. You cant get 7.6ghz through 667 mhz buss.

You dont even know what modern games look like like oblivion or dark messiah. The dx 9 effects are really actually recent to games they show objects emmitting light
    Youll be impressed.

What other things can you do with the GS1? Doesn't it have some sort of new wireless card or something? I'm glad to hear it's a lot better than the machine I have now.

    My current machine:
    Pentium 3 800mhz 512kb L2 cache
    256mb 133mhz SDRAM
    10GB 5400rpm HD
    Geforce 2 MX400 32mb

Going to be getting a G1s or equivalent in the summer, I think it'll be noticeably different :D

    I really want this pc

but a subwoofer is something else I must have.

There are some 15 inch notebooks out today with them. If this Asus does not have one....I will have to keep looking.

And I am getting fed up. I cannot find a laptop with everything I want. Always something missing!

I think small external speaker or a headset will provide you with better sound then any notebook speakers even if they have a subwoofer.

What laptop with subwoofer are you looking at? The Toshiba Qosmio is suposed to have good speakers. I am sure they will have a Santa Rosa DX10 version soon.

E-SATA provides a very faster interface than USB2.0 for transferring data [used for external drives].
HDMI : Has something to do with DRM infection. Not sure though.

cpu = central processing unit = processor

For instance: Intel Core 2 Duo T7500
