If I were to buy a ASUS notebook in Taiwan and have a hardware issue, do I need to send the notebook to California?
If so, do I need the original packaging or how would I package the notebook to RMA it?
Also, is ASUS really cheaper in Taiwan? By how much?

Anything is going to be cheaper at it's source..... shipping costs and import duties are added into anything you buy here... technically you're going to do the same when you claim it on the return visit and your "shipping" cost is your plane ticket.... Some times it works out.
You have a global warranty with all Asus ensemble notebooks and as long as the product you're buying is available in the US, it can be serviced here. If they don't sell it here, they'll still service it, most likely, but parts may need to be ordered and therefore the turnaround time will be increased quite a bit. -
Hi frnchung. I'm currently in Taiwan, and am considering the Asus W3j. I have done quite a bit of looking around. All Asus notebooks here in Taiwan come with a 2 year global warranty! What you have to be sure about is that you get a proper receipt, meaning you have to pay 5% tax. Asus is quite a bit cheaper here in Taiwan. For example the Asus W3j is $1310 here in Taiwan, but is $1799 in the US. There are some slight differences in it though in Taiwan. For example in the US its the T2400 (1.83), in Taiwan its the T2300 (1.66). In Taiwan the HD is a 4200RPM instead of a 5400RPM. And the RAM speed is 533 instead of 667. This doesn't add up to nearly $400 of extra parts that come in the US version of the W3j. I would say around $100-$150. But then in the US Asus notebooks only come with a 1 year global warranty, and in Taiwan it's 2 years. In Taiwan you also get a free case, bluetooth mouse, and a 256MB USB memory key. I would say all of that is worth $100-$150.
Hope this helps, and sorry that I only talked about the W3j. What model are you interested in? I could check on a price for you so you could compare it with the prices in the US. -
$400 Difference!? That's great. Plus, I can bargain too...
Does Taiwan offer upgrades to the standards speed ie. 4200rpm to 5400rpm and the ram of 667 instead of 533? I believe these have a significant impact on performance. Correct me if I am wrong.
For the 2-yr glocal warranty, have you tried it before in the US? Or was the product good enough that it did not need repair? One concern I have about buying in Taiwan is that it would be hard to bring the original packaging back to the US in case I need to RMA the notebook.
I am actually not looking to any particular model yet. I am just researching early for next year (Summer 06) when I go back to Taiwan. -
jasonck08 or someone else,
do you know the w3j price in Beijing, China? my sister is going to china next week and if the price is much cheaper than here I will buy it in china. here in Holland, w3j cost about 1700 euro. that's about $2100...
how about A8jm? is it cheaper also? -
HI Jason,
Are you still in Taiwan? I'm there this weekend & will be looking for a V1S, a cheap V1J or pushing out the boat for a G2S. Do you know what the price is for any of these? In HK I could get a V1J for NT$42300. Where is the best place to shop & get a full international warranty (I live in the UK), english Vista & keyboard?
Many thanks for any guidance.

I would just buy the cheapest spec and buy the upgradable parts yourself (sometimes cheaper than getting reseller to change it for you.
I brought a W3J and F3J from Proportable while I was in the states, I brought both of them back (to the UK) with me, laptop in hand luggage and packing boxes etc in my checkin luggage (I wanted to keep the original packaging).
I suppose it is a risk, if I had been searched by customs entering the UK, I could have been charged importing tax, but I wasn't so I was lucky.
you could always just post the packaging manuals etc back to the US, so it is not on you when you pass customs? I am sure customs would not charge you for an empty box, or you could always buy some ornament and say the box is just packaging??
I need to send my F3 in for service and the local Asus rep in London said as long as I have a reciept, I can send it through him... no problem, I sure world wide means you could use any Asus reseller in the world to get your unit RMAed if need be.
Have fun!
