I've replaced the original 5400 rpm HD in the computer, clean install of Win 7 64bit and all the drivers.

Computer is working great with the new drive. I ordered the 2nd HD 'caddy' and installed the formatted (old) drive in the second slot.

The computer isn't recognizing it or even seeing that I have installed a second drive.

I know the drive is good, as I put it in a external drive cage I have and my desktop found it right away. Put it in the laptop...nothing. Put back in external drive cage...PC finds it.

I poked around in the laptop bios to see if there was something there I needed to change, but didn't find anything.

What do I need to do to make my laptop find this second HD????

    Thanks for any tips.

Could there be a jumper on the 2nd HD that needs to be moved?
If you hit ESC shortly after power on does the drive show up?
IN BIOS - advanced- Sata config- Do you see 2 HDD's and the optical drive?
What is the SATA mode set to ACH or IDE (in BIOS)

I didn't see any jumpers on the drive, I'll look when I get home.

No, the drive doesn't show up if I hit esc when booting up, nor does it appear in the BIOS if I f9 during startup.

I'll have to check the SATA setting when I get home. What would be best? Thanks.

    @JP

The N73SV has 4 bios updates available on the support page. Should I just use the most recent, or is there a particular one that ASUS recommended?

    Thanks!

You should always use the latest one as a rule. it will be cumulative. Be careful to follow the guide, a bad BIOS flash can brick your machine. The guide in the previous link is excellent!
If in doubt repost someone here will be glad to help!

Thank you all for your help. I flashed the BIOS this morning per the instructions, process took about 1 minute.

Extra drives were detected and are working properly upon reboot w/new BIOS installed!

    :)

Hi, I got a similar issue but quite different.

My G73JH has been working great( for nearly 1 year) until today. The second HDD just disappeared while I was working on the laptop. I did restarted the laptop few times but still the system could not detect the second HDD. Even in Bios, could not see the 2nd HDD.
I removed the 2nd HDD and plugged it back again, but did not solve the issue.
I used a GoFlex cable and connected the HDD to the laptop through USB port, and the system recognized it. My system is up to date ( Bios, Drivers...)

Any idea what is wrong with my laptop? Please , any advice is very much appreciated.

    Current Notebook:

    -1x80GB Intel X25-M SATA SSD ( OS )
    -1x500GB Seagate Momentus™ XT 7200rpm HDDs

Have you tried putting another HDD into the bay where it was? The problem might be with the sata connector/cable if the bios doesn't detect it.

Ok, I put the HDD back again last night and it's back to normal. So weird. I have no idea what's wrong with my laptop.
Anyway, thanks for your help tijo.
