This is a simple trick I learned while chatting with some folks from here and lv2g. Simple, clean and quick way to install signed desktop drivers in Vista x64 on your notebook. Not responsible for anything burning up, try at own risk.

    1. First go to nVidias's website and download the newest nv graphics drivers for the desktop version of your video card.

    2. Next, decompress them somehow, couple of ways you can do this. One follows the no needed extra software method, the other one you'll need 7zip:

    a. In order to extract the install files you can purposefully do a failed install since it self extracts to the hard drive C:\NVIDIA\xxx

    b. Download and install 7zip x64 and extract the install files.

    3. Run the device manager, with Admin if needed. Goto the Start Menu/Orb, click the 'start search' (love this feature), type in 'device manager' and press enter (or ctrl+shift+enter).

    4. Go to Display adapters and select the unkown device, graphics device or 8600M GT. Right click and choose 'update driver software'.

    5. Goto 'Browse Computer for Driver Software'>>'Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer'>>'Have disk'

    6. Browse to where ever you extracted the nv drivers to, choose the .inf file and select 'ok'.

    7. It will give your a list of nv desktop cards, select the closest card to yours from the list, normally that would be the 8600GT (I choose the 8600GTS) and follow the remaining steps.

    8. Reboot and done.

Windows won't bug you about WHQL or Signed Drivers anymore, but you'll need to follow these steps to update your drivers when you want to. This will help bypass any INF modifying or BIOS spoofing (like with Rivertuner). Good luck and enjoy!

PS Powermizer, all that crap still works and the card throttles correctly, don't ask me why.

Would this work for the 9600? Does this make the gpu run cooler? What about overclocking, if I have mine set via nightwalker's guide through flashing?

Over clocking works fine, but I tend to keep it at the clocks set by Asus and the VGA enhancer. I don't see why this wouldn't work with the 9600M, I'd love to here from some one else with another card if it worked for them, maybe someone with a G50 or any other notebook with an nvidia card. Seems to run a bit cooler then average, but I have no reason why.
