I bought another 1GB stick of RAM to install in my W3J, but the process isn't as straightforward as it would be in a desktop.

I removed the bottom plate from the laptop, and found the extra RAM slot. I lined the stick of RAM up and tried to push it in, but it didn't budge. When I start up my computer it doesn't recognize the extra stick.

I opened it back up and really pushed on it, and the stick moved in about half a mm, but won't go any further. Now when I start the computer, nothing happens, I just get a black screen.

I'm wondering if I got a bad stick of RAM, or if I missed something when installing it.

That is strange. I had the same problem as well, but after 3 attempts, the stick snapped in, and my notebook was able to recognize it. Maybe you aren't sticking it in, in the correct alignment, if you know what I mean. Try a couple more times, if you are still unsuccessful, then return the stick and get another one.

You are to put it in the slots at a 45 degree angle, then push it down, same method but the other way around when taking ram out.

Ditto... it is straight forward and probably easier I'd say than a desktop...... it slides in at a 45 degree angle and then once the pins are basically hidden, it pushes down and locks. If that memory doesn't show up, then you probably shorted it out - as that certainly can happen unless you're using the proper anti static mats and so forth....

Thanks guys, it's installed and everything is going well now.

Initially I was snapping the two metal bits on the sides to the stick of RAM before pushing it in. Once I pushed the stick in, then down into the locks it was much easier.

got the same problem here, im gonna keep trying for now
let say i got static on my ram, whats the best way to fix it ?

quick question tho, my w3j is the latest core duo, the version after mine is the one with core 2 duo. it comes with 1gb ram
ive been reading the forum about w3j ram, and almost all of them have the extra ram slot UNDER the keyboard, on mine.... the slot under the keyboard is filled with the stock ram, the extra empty slot is at the back of the laptop.
is it w3j version thing that the ram placement is different on mine than others ??

    thanks

i have the core2duo version and the empty slot is the one at the bottom part, not the one under the keyboard.

As long as you bought DDR2, it should work. Unless of course it has issues with the motherboard of the W3J.

Like PROPortable said, you may have shorted out the socket. Try swapping the RAM that was originally in there to that other socket and put it in. You should hear it click in and lock into the sides of the chip. Make sure the socket brace is in those little indents on the side of the chip so you know it is secure before you turn it on.

Also, discharge yourself of static before you do it. I've fried a USB port before by not doing this.

Yep. Change the motherboard in RMA. :)
