Just wondering if anyone else has tried installing Ubuntu Linux onto an Asus G1 laptop? Or even repartition the Hard Drive with Visita already installed and then installed Ubuntu?
I am considering attempting this, and wondered if anyone has any advice or pitfalls to avoid.
Thoughts?
Thanks![]()

BOOOOO down with Ubuntu.
lol sory about that but I really dont see what people like about Ubuntu so much, it aint better than openSUSE, Fedora or Mandriva yet people go crazy about it. As for installing it, first make a backup of all you important stuff cos whenever you install onther OS on top of another something always goes wrong. If you still want to try it, I'd suggest you resize your HDD and create a new partiotion where you can install linux and then delete it if you dont like it. The enoying thing with Ubuntu is that its partion manager is not that good, which mean that you have to create another 3 sub-partitions on the new partition u already made by yourself. The root, the home and the swap partition. I dont know how much you know about linux, but sometimes you can mess everything up and have to erase the whole drive, like i did. Anyway good luck.

AFAIK, it could be because Ubuntu's download is 700mb, while the others are 3-4GB >-<

I am looking for something a little less power and memory hogging than Vista, although my games and applications (programming) are already setup on the Vista side, to do things like surf the web or email or take notes in meetings.
Thanks for the tips of caution. -
well less power hogging.... thats going to be a problem. I found that Ubuntu uses up at least as much battery power as Vista as ubuntu is not as optimized for power efficiency as it could be.
As for memory hogging, Vista caches stuff into memory, so its not really using all that much more in fact. -
I use Ubuntu on my G1, in addition to XP and openSuse, and I have to say I love it. If you don't like the partition manager in Ubuntu, use the GParted LiveCD; it's more up-to-date than the version included in Ubuntu. As for power management, I get just as much, if not more, battery life with Ubuntu compared to XP. Admittedly, the power saving features are quite simple (downclocking the cpu, monitor brightness adjustment, etc), but I'm pleased with the results nonetheless. And on startup, Ubuntu uses up only 100-150MB of RAM compared to 300MB++ with XP, so no complaints there. It starts up faster too... To be fair, it doesn't have as many things to load at startup, but it's still completely functional for my needs. All in all, I'm very happy with Ubuntu so far.

Ubuntu is more power hungry than XP... for me at least. In XP, I can use programs to underVOLT my CPU... something that I can't do in Linux unless I recompile the kernel (unless there's a utility out there that I don't know about). Overall though, Ubuntu is a decent alternative for the novice/average linux user who wants something alternative to Windows.
