Given that Intel recently released drivers that fix severe vulnerabilities in Intel's Wireless solutions (including 2100BG, 2915ABG, etc...) I would think it is Asus's responsibility to:

    1. Get new, fixed drivers officially released for all their affected laptops as soon as possible (in my case - the W3V, please). All of Asus's currently available drivers are affected by these vulnerabilities.

    2. Write and release a new HControl that interfaces properly with the new Intel drivers and doesn't crash so I can actually have functioning laptop buttons again. If they *are* writing a new HControl, it would at least help if they could let us know about their progress.

It's not much of a choice to make when one is forced to choose between having functional extra buttons or being secure from possible threats. To those resellers out there (PROPortable, Geared2Play, etc.) - I would appreciate it if you could let Asus know about these concerns, if you haven't already. I'd really like to get my laptop buttons functioning again...

I was just wondering why no one brought up the Intel Wireless threat issue.. glad you did. And I'm not about to try the generic one Intel offers on their site, keeping my fingers crossed with my "vulnerable" drivers :p

Yeah I think HControl really should have been written by ASUS with customisation options. But seems like I'm lucky mine are working at all

Why cant you just use the new intel drivers? Security of your laptop is your responsibility. If its realy that big of a problem why dont you use intel's drivers untill Asus releases their rebranded version of them? Kinda stupid to be sitting there with a vuln laptop just because Asus didnt rebrand the intel drivers yet. I see no difference between Intel's and Asus's.

    solution:dont use the intel program.

The security issue is with the PROSET software not driver. I use Wireless Zero config as its less resource hungry anyway.

There is a big difference. Asus wireless drivers on their site are a couple revisions behind what intel has out and offers on their site. now the logical solution would be to go to intels sight and use their wireless driver like you can on any other brand laptop right? WRONG. asus Hcontrol which is the driver that allows you have volume and system functions with the FN key stops working if you use intels driver. asus software has had this issue for over 6 months now so you have to use their outdated driver or have a useless control bottuns on your keyboard thats the issue.

really? because the w7j uses intel drivers(which is on the driver cd aswell as their download site for the w7) and its fine, everything works fine.

Same here...using Intel's driver and it offers much more diagnostics, profile control, etc. than the built in windows interface. Cheers!

that was the issue with the w3v the z63a the w2v. and some of the new chipsets that came out. yes the driver cd that came with the laptop will work fine. but go to intels website and download their driver and try it. of course the ones that came with the laptop will work. but those might be outdated.

no, i meant that the ones on the cd are intel branded and is the exact same as you would find on intel.com (if you searched for older releases) and the new ones from intel.com still work for the w7j. i updated long before notebookreview posted the link. (when i reformated for the 4k cluster in the other thread drivers were released 2006/07/21)

i honestly dont have an answer to that. I know it was an issue. and was even an issue when the 945 chipsets first came out, But to this day i can not use intels drivers on my z63a or it will disable my hcontrol.

Err... I installed the new 10.5 on my Z96JS and when I use the FN-2 to toggle the WiFi and BT off, the BT goes off but the WiFi stays on. :(

Turn off WiFi, scan for networks... hey, there's a whole bunch of them! It lied to me! WTH.

Then, I put in the ASUS supplied ones and it works beautifully. I wonder if they hacked the drivers or whether it's some sort of software hook or something... maybe we could just copy the modified files from the new one into the old one or something.

Unfortunately for you, this is wrong. There are multiple vulnerabilities, affecting both the driver and the Proset software... therefore you are still vulnerable.

Do any of you really have anything that important on your laptops? prob not. use WPA and your fine. anyone that is good enough to exploit your vulneralbilities will find a way in. so unless you are doing some black ops project noone wants your porn collection that bad.

The 10.5 drivers from Intel worked fine on my W7J. The FN-2 toggle works as before

It's all okay if you don't have anything important to protect, like client data or patient information, but Asus doesn't just sell to people who have nothing important on their computer. Some customers actually have data they need to protect, and it would be great to be able to do it without losing the features that led them to buy from Asus in the first place. Just because 90% of people have nothing to protect when they buy a Dell laptop doesn't mean Dell isn't going to provide updates... and Dell already has updated their available drivers - several days ago, in fact. Meanwhile, there hasn't been an single updated WLAN driver for about a year for my W3V.

Some people don't quite understand the magnitude of these vulnerabilities. It doesn't even matter what security (WPA, WEP, etc.) you have enabled. All you need is to have your wireless card turned on and it is vulnerable... it doesn't even have to be connected to a network.

Anyways, the whole point is: ASUS needs to get in gear with providing timely software support for their products. Until they do this, they will not be able to provide to more demanding customers and businesses.

How often do you type your credit card number into your computer?

    Put this on the v6j

You press the hardware button to turn it on, it goes on, then off.

Not looking for asus to release their version anytime soon, so I guess Im S.O.L

and BTW, for those of you who don't already know....asus is never in a hurry to release updated drivers. For example, they released some nvidia driver, about 3 weeks ago on their site. it was like 85.93 or something. NVidia has about 15 driver versions ahead of that out now......
