after my new and fresh vista re-install, i decided i should take the time to figure out which gpu driver ill be happiest with - i noticed a few people stating 169.09 was out and that it worked well - well, its out - and it does work, but it actually LOWERED my 3dmark05 score - by a lot

heres the breakdown (im at work - so dont have the EXACT numbers with me - but ill round down to the closest hundred points)

please note - i tested these without any over-clocking

    with stock drivers:
    - 3dmark05 = ~7400
    - 3dmark06 = ~3700

    with 169.09
    - 3dmark05 = ~6600 (!!!)
    - 3dmark06 = ~3700 (this one changed by only 30 points - but it was 30 points LOWER than with the stock drivers - iirc, it was 3773 with the stock drivers, and 3743 with 169.09)

    with 169.04
    - 3dmark05 = 8101 (!!! - i remember this number exactly)
    - 3dmark06 = ~3900

look at that difference - its pretty remarkable - especially comparing the 169.04 numbers to the 169.09 numbers - the latest drivers score almost 1500 points LESS! i understand that you never know what youre gonna get with new drivers - but that seems like a VERY big change to me

im gonna be bumping up to 3gb of system ram tonite - i wonder if thatll affect anything...

Have to remember that 3Dmark06 is kinda not always accurate... It depends on what programs and the number of processes open at the same time. As well, as what power setting your laptop is set on. so, if you run it again the score will be different.. Not by that much of course, but still. 169.09 is the best driver out there so far...no reason to not use it since its stable, allows overclocking and can play any new game smoothly...

i think im going to stick with 169.04 - i performed all of these tests under the exact same conditions - i just ran them one right after another

shut down computer - started back up - did nothing but open up the 3dmark program and ran them - i did 05 first and then 06

then i would immediately install the next driver - once the driver was in - i would shut down the computer for about 10 minutes (to allow it to cool down a bit - i dont know if that would even matter) - then i started the process all over again

i actually ran the 169.04 tests last:
    1. ran stock driver
    2. ran 169.09
    3. ran 169.04

in reading the gaming forum - it looks like quite a few people with g1s models are running into all sorts of problems with 169.09 - the consensus over there is just to stick with 169.04 for now...

EDIT - and im sure the program isnt dead accurate - but to get a 1500 point difference - thats just insane

Then again why the heck does 3Dmark05 matter anymore anyway? It's outdated and means nothing in terms of real gaming performance.

lol - that i dont know - im not technical enough to know that stuff

youd have to ask all of the pro gamers and tech writers who still use 05 as a reliable benchmark - you'd figure they must know something...

Well, most of them don't anymore. That's the thing lol. For example, if you were to check the recent Notebookreview.com reviews they use the 06 version...
