I'm looking at getting an Asus 2nd hand, used only a month. The seller says it comes with 11 months of accidental damage warranty and another year of the standard.
My questions is regarding ownership of the laptop. Do I need to get it transferred over to my name, or will just the manufacturer's date on the laptop be sufficient if there's an issue?
How much of a pain in the will Asus give me if I have problems back in the States with a 2nd hand laptop bought in Thailand?
My experience with HD's and WD, they didn't seem to care at all about ownership as long as the HD was still under warranty and not reported as stolen, but no experience with international notebook warranties.

ASUS provides a worldwide warranty. You can have it repaired anywhere.
As far as I know you need original bill. The bill tells the actual date of purchase otherwise the warranty would be starting from manifacturing date which is located at the bottom side of the machine.
If for example the notebook is manufactured 4 months ago then you have not 11 months but 8 of warranty left.
I don't know if it will matter in whose name the bill is. To be sure maybe you can have some letter signed by the seller saying that he sold the machine to you.
Make sure that is has accidental damage warranty (AWD). As far as I know, AWD is only offered to machines bought in USA and Canada. -
Thank you for the advice. The guy said has 11 months left of accidental and 1 year 11 months of regular warranty, so not sure. I will investigate further if the accidental warranty is even offered on laptops sold in Thailand....
Just wasn't sure if there were some catches with the global warranty like having to having to have the unit registered in my name...sounds like that's not the case from what you write. -
According to the official ASUS website, ADW is only for USA and Canada.
It also says that ADW is not tranferable to other persons.
Here is the link: ASUS Accidental Damage Warranty -
I live in Sweden and I bought my ASUS W90 from the USA, through ebay. My laptop is at an ASUS repair center right now and so far they have not given me any indication my warranty is not valid.

I bought my N71JQ also from USA and I live in Germany.
I was talking about the ADW.
My N71JQ came with ADW, but it would only be valid if I was living in USA.
I could not register for the ADW as I live in Germany.
According to ASUS website the ADW seems to be also not transferable if you sell the machine.
