I am being lazy...since I got my new z70va I have had no time to really play with it. I just put enough on to make it serviceable for work.

I posted this query in the software forum but I was wondering if I already received good software with ASUS for the purpose of internet streaming. I used to use Real Player.. but people seem to think it sucks now and I don't want to "contaminate" the ASUS. The Windows Media Player currently plays the streaming automatically.

I have not looked at all into DVD players, Mp3 software, ripping or anything. That will all have to wait for another month when my semester is over.

On the software thread, a number of people recommended VLC, Media Player Center and Real Alternative. But I was wondering if software came with the ASUS that is better.

I do not like the Windows media player. It seems like it makes my speakers sound hollow or muffled, like people are speaking with a cold... it doesn't sound crisp. I also don't like (at least I can't find) that it does not tell you how long the clip it is playing is.

And whatever I use, what do I have to do to prevent it from taking over the machine for everything.

I tried installing an old version of Real Player I have.. but I don't like it and I suspect that is a bad idea anyway... so I am going to remove it.

I don't want an easy out just because I am not (yet) sophisticated. I will learn in stages. Right now I want to stream broadcasts from the internet.

And while I am at it, does anybody know how to get Quick Time to stop loading automatically? I hate that Q in the lower right hand corner.

Also, for whatever people recommend...could they provide links for me to get it?

For quicktime, I believe it will always load automatically to an extent.. but if you want to get rid of that icon, you'll have to start Quicktime, click on Edit -> Preferences -> Quicktime Preferences, then click on the ADVANCED tab. At the very bottom, you can UNcheck "Install QuickTime icon in system tray"

    Then voila, no more "Q"

Justitia, I have ONE player that will solve all your problems, and with a small amount of money you can get this player to play DVDs as well, although the Asus DVD player is great.

Download The Core Media Player, then go to www.free-codecs.com and download and install the latest K-Lite Codec Pack.

You will LOVE this player I guarantee it. Everything is logical, shortcut keys on the keyboard are great and simple.

When you download movies from the internet and it just doesn't fill the screen you can pan in by using page up/down to zoom in and out. This of course distorts the image somewhat, but not noticeable.

I really suggest you try this player out. It comes with 2 skins, one of which is a horizontal mode where the player turns into this slim little stick you can just stick at the top of your screen and out of the way. It's slim enough to fit in and blend in with the top of any window so it really doesn't get in the way and you can set it to be always on top.

GREAT I tell you, just awesome~!

Cheers and ask more questions if you are bored,
    Mike

    Hey no problem. :D

If you do come into problems with codecs, try mixing different versions of the K-Lite Codec packs, do NOT mix with other ones.

Also when you are installing the K-Lite codec pack it might ask you if you want to uninstall the existing Haali Media Splitter that comes with the Core Media Player, but don't do it, that thing needs to be there for everything to be okay. Why? I don't know, but I've encountered problems after uninstalling that piece.

    Cheers,
    Mike

In terms of internet streaming my experiance is that it depends completely on the site your streaming from....some use realplayer, and the only way to watch that is thru rp10....klite will play rm files but wont handle internet streaming.
For me I use a combination of wmp10 + quicktime (i use itunes so this comes by defult) this covers about 85% of all my streaming activities. Unless you find stream that requires realplayer then dont install it. I personally dont like it much. its slow as hell and its interface is confusing and ugly imho....its trying to compete with itunes.....just doesnt get there.
    a
    :)

ps. while I have install klite in the past I would advise against it unless you are having trouble playing a particular avi file due to a missing codec. Installing that pack will usually be the quickest way to solve that problem, but for streaming it just doesnt cut it....and can often cause conflicts if you already have other versions of codecs install eg quicktime, divx etc

Yeup Underpantman is correct. Only install K-Lite Codec pack as a stand alone codec fix. If you have other stuff installed, uninstall it first.

Also, with streaming media I also use a combination of Windows Media Player 10 and Quicktime. With most of my codecs covered by the K-Lite Codec pack I do'nt have any problems with streams.

I use the K-Lite codec pack and Media Player Classic. Works very well.
