Hi all,
Forgive me for such 'newbie' question.
Having carrying my 8 lb (+ adapter and cables) Dell notebook for 4 years, 2 hours a day, 5 days a week, I would like to go for a new and lighter one. And I suddenly noticed this new player (ASUS).
I love Dell's reliability and excellent support, though i looks a bit dumb, and not quite innovative.
But, based on ASUS' specifications, their notebooks are very interesting, especially at such incredible prices.
My questions:
- How reliable is it? (I will use it +10 hours everyday. I cannot afford for fixes every couple months.)
- How's the technical support?
- Does the notebook(s) look good?
- other comments are welcome.

Asus has served as an ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) for many brand names you see out on the market today. In other words, they're not new at this game and have made laptops for companies such as HP and possibly even Dell (not totally sure on that one). Therefore, their quality is high and they know what they're doing with design. Customer support is a different issue. I haven't heard much about it nor are they large enough to have been rated by typical polls put in places like PCMag or Computer World. My instinct says that they're probably not as good as major mfrs. They're Taiwanese based and I've seen some pretty horrible English written brochures about their product lines...as in lots of mispellings and stuff like that. So if they're marketing department isn't all that together, I'm not so sure their customer service would be either. If you buy through a site like www.proportable.com though they might offer warranty and service above and beyond the manufacturer.

If you have to depend on this thing for your life, I'd go with IBM or Fujitsu.

If you live in the states, then I would have to agree with Brian.
ASUS have not yet penetrated the US market that much, so I'm guessing that authorised service centres will be few and far between. Here in Aust, it is slightly different, ASUS is very common and I can just take the notebook back to the place I got it (ie local computer store round the corner) for repairs.
ASUS do have a 2 year warrenty which is pretty good when compared to other smaller notebook man'fs. I am hoping that I never need to use the warrenty, and so far none of the products that I have brought from ASUS have given me trouble. But if you live in the states and as brian said, if your life depends on it, go with either a IBM or Fujitsu, as you will get better support should you need it.
