I was simply installing windows xp on my Asus C90P this morning having got my replacement SSD (it died lol yup my luck is perfect) and after I had finished installing most of the drivers decided to restart it so that the machine can refresh its memory to continue installing other stuff. However the screen never came on again. I sounds like it tries to boot several times and then gives up but with nothing on screen at all. I am totally at a loss as to what has happened it can't be that SSD as its brand new and I would still have access on screen to the bios etc if that died. So could it be the motherboard or the GPU.
Can anyone shed some light onto this![]()

The fan does come on briefly I guess. I was thinking same thing in that the GPU died but it is odd that it didn't show any sign of dying before I reset the computer . Usually one gets flicking or crashing drivers or freezing etc. Mine ran perfect until I reset the last time. Plus the GPU is very new. Maybe 2 weeks of proper use before the SSD died and went in for RMA, although I will be honest it was OCed as shown in the sig in its bios. However even at those clocks it never exceeded 70C in Crysis or 75C in ati-tool after hours of testing.

If the fan shuts down automatically after a while then I'd think that there might be something wrong with the mobo's BIOS or something like that.
With a desktop you'd be able to switch GPUs easily and that would be the best way to test it but you can't really easily do it with laptops......you migh have to end up sending it in for repairs if you're warranty is still good -

fan runs a couple of seconds on full but that is usual even when it worked then it quietens down to normal speed. Can the mobo bios be reset? Tis ridiculous this machine is practically brand new! What annoys me is I can't even reflash the GPU back to its original clocks now.

Anyways, there are a couple of things you can do to get your laptop BIOS to hopefully recover.
To reset the BIOS, take out the battery and unplug it from the wall and then press + hold the power button for 5 seconds and then try again.
The other, more drastic option, is to take the laptop apart and take out the CMOS battery for a while (no battery or AC power) for like 15 minutes and then put it back in but thats a bit hardcore... -

I will when I return home do both. Opening the laptop to expose its guts is very easy as its a desktop replacement but I don't know where the Cmos battery is, as far the graphics card in concerned it is mxm based so I could a replacement just like a desktop but I don't fancy shelling out $140 or so just to find out that isn't the problem lol. On a desktop its usually a nice large watch battery thing but a laptop is much smaller! I am not a religious man but I pray this works. Just about had it with hardware problems!

The fan does a few spins and dies out quickly right? If your notebook has led indicators they flash on and off immediately?
If so from what I have seen it is either Power Supply module or Motherboard. But I would send it for repairs to the manufacturer or the place you bought it. -
HAve you tried using an external monitor?
Just an extra test you could do before the eventual RMA. -

Tried resetting the cmos to no avail. Also plugged in an external monitor and no response either. I believe it is the GPU now as I can access the bios pressing f2. Proof of this is that I can turn the machine off with simple click of the on button which you usually have to hold down unless you are in the bios to turn the machine off. I am going to bake the GPU tomorrow and if that fails I will part the machine out and get a desktop and or netbook once money flows again
Asus really has let me down on this one and I am not sure I can buy their stuff again. RMA is useless as the GPU is bios overclocked. They will never replace it under warranty
-
Why don't you "fix" it so that the laptop doesn't turn on at all?
That way you can RMA it because of an undefined problem. -
And, not be an , but it's not Asus' fault that you OC'd your GPU and decreased it's longevity. There's a reason the clocks are what they are.

Nah really cba to RMA again. Literally just waited 3 weeks for new SSD that broke after just 1 year and now this. The GPU was overclocked but still after a couple of weeks it shouldn't have broken so quickly, still I do admit it was my fault. Guess I won't tinker in the future lol although it is fun while it lasts!

Was that SSD standard or did you add it? Let me know who made it so I know what not to buy.
Does anyone know if the C90P RAM is the same as the G51VX RAM?
If so, I'll buy some of that RAM off of you. Maybe. That's if the G51 has more than two slots and the RAM is matching.
Which, now that I think about it, I don't know that the G51 has three slots D: -
I would try a few things before sending it in.
1. I would remove the SSD and see if it will POST without a hard drive.
2. I would read this post: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=162684
Apparently Asus solders the CMOS Battery to the Motherboard. So it would be very difficult to effective clear the CMOS. There are solutions to your notebook's problem, If all else fails I would visit an Authorized Asus Service Provider. -They might be able to fix it relatively easily. -

Yes I bios overclocked it as it using nbitor then flashing the new clocks using nvflash as no software method worked. I will try to boot without the SSD as you say but I don't think the method as described in the thread you linked will work as this is a different computer with a different motherboard.

i dont really know if we have the same problem, but that's EXACTLY what happened when my GPU died. No signs, no warnings, nothin. Just after a year, my c90s suddenly would power on a bit and then shut down completely, ( without even reaching the ASUS splash page ) no display, no power and no activity. I just suspected it was the GPU because resellers confirmed that they had several repairs & returns due to faulty GPU. Ordered a new one thru excaliberpc, and the problem was solved. gudluck !
