My parents are in the market for a new laptop. I've narrowed the choice to an Asus M50Vm-B1.

I've got a few questions to ask Gentech, but I can't seem to get them to answer the phone. I've read on this site that they are a good source for Asus products and have excellent customer service.

I've called the 800 number (800-990-7945) on their contact page numerous times in the last hour or so. I also called a non-800 number on that page as well and still no answer. I'm in the same time zone asthey are so they should be open for business.

I wonder if they are having problems with their phone system? In any event, this does not bode well for their excellent customer service if you can't even get them on the phone...............

I don't want to do questions via email because that takes too long. We will probably order a unit today, if I can get my questions answered.

    Your insight is appreciated.

You could ask the questions on the forums to get answers, if you wanted.

I thought I WAS asking questions in the forums.... Am I in the worng place?

Update: Just got off the phone with Ken at Gentech, who was very helpful. He said that the busiest time of the day is in the morning and so it's sometimes tough to get through. He said it's better to call in the afternoon. I mentioned that they might want to put that information on the contact page by the 800 number so others won't be frustrated like I was.

Gentech has excellent customer service, especially working with Ken. Don't be so quick to be frustrated, you'll get more personalized service than you would have calling Dell even if you got through on your first try.

What Ken did not tell you, that while you call from East Coast at 12:00, there is only 9:00 on the West Coast and Ken just entered his office to calm you down

I guess I came off as rather abrupt in my first post. I do apologize if this is the impression I’ve given……..

In researching this purchase I’ve spent hours looking at different brands and different models within those brands and different variations within those models. I’ve spent many hours on a myriad of websites. In fact, that’s how I came to find this forum! I’ve learned a lot about laptops and have looked through several threads on this forum that deal with the M50Vm. I’ve read/skimmed through at least ¾ of the pages on the M50Vm owners area within the last 24 hours or so. I’d pretty much figured out the differences between the different flavors of the M50Vm…………A1, B1, B2, B4 and even the X1 from Newegg.

I guess my point is that I like to do as much research and learn as much as I can before I start asking questions.

From reading the forums, I learned of a company that many of you use to buy gear……….Gentech. I had never heard of them before, but I had never heard of Newegg before I started ordering products from them either. Since I had a few questions that I couldn’t answer, I thought it would be a good time to call Gentech and check out their level of service. Being a little bit leery of a new source, I definitely wanted some initial phone contact before I ordered anything, just to get a general feel for whom I would be dealing with.

The reason I didn’t post my actual questions here was that I needed information quickly and I wasn’t sure how active the forums were. It turns out that you have a very lively community here and perhaps my questions would have been answered more quickly than I realized.

Examples of the questions I asked Ken at Gentech are:

    1. Does Vista come configured so you don’t have to log in? Yes

    2. Can the fingerprint reader be disabled? Yes

    3. Can the fingerprint reader be used for more than one person? Yes..up to 10 people

    4. I wanted to claify Gentech’s return policy.

    5. I wanted to clarify exactly which software comes bundled with the B1. I had seen conflicting information.

    6. I wanted to see approximately how long it would take the unit to get to us. I had read on one of the forums that Gentech tests a unit fort 7-10 days, but that’s the shipments from Asus to Gentech, not shipments to customers. I needed clarification on that.

    7. I needed clarification on the dead pixel policy, which turned out to be for bright pixels. The dead pixel policy is for 5 or more dead pixels.

    8. Is there a manual available for download? I’d like to read it, if I can, before I order a product. It would have answered several of my questions above. I could not find one through using Google or the Asus web site. Ken couldn’t find one either, so I’m out of luck on that one.

So………… to make a long story short (well not really…lol), that’s why I was frustrated and curious about not being able to initially get through to Gentech. That’s why the only question I needed to ask at the time was if anyone was aware of telephone problems.

Once I got through to Ken, I had a very nice, informative conversation. Once I get the approval from my parents, we’ll order a unit from them.

    And finally….

Redline, and others, I apologize for my snippy reply to you. Since I had only one question to ask and had asked it, I didn’t know what I had done wrong. Your use of questions plural (questions) in your post lead me to reply that I thought I was asking question(s) in the forum. This lead to ClearSkies to assume that I thought I had asked several questions on the forums, when, in fact, I had only that one question to ask……whew……..

I’m a very literal person, so I usually interpret things fairly narrowly. Again, I apologize for any confusion I may have caused and will look forward to using this forum as a valuable resource in the future.

P.S. I just saw Oldman’s post. I’m in the Pacific Time zone, just like Ken, so it was after 9 am when I started calling. I thought I changed to Pacific time in my profile……..

    FalvinP,
Firstly Ken from GenTech has made very detailed review. Here is the link

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=229282

Secondly, could you please edit your post with questions in such a way that each question had a number : 1 2 3
    or letter: a) b) c)

    It will ease the answers

    Thank you

Oldman, thanks for the replies. I'm not sure I understand why you posted the time of my first post. I was not calling from the east coast as I'm in Oregon, so I'm unclear what you mean. Am I mistaken in thinking Ken is located in Southern California?

Thank you for the link to the review. However it is for the M50Sv, not the M50Mv that I'm interested in. I've seen the comprehensive review posted in these forums for the M50Vm. It was very informative.

Unless there is something more to add, I got the answers I needed and put them at the end of each question in my earlier post. Per your request, I've numbered the questions.

It would be nice if someone could steer me to a download of the owners manual, but if it's not on the Asus site I'm not sure it can be found.

    Thanks for your help.

    1 NO
When you start your computer first time, you will be capable to leave user name and password blank and skip lon on in future

    2. YES

    3. YES

    4. IS NOT QUESTION
If Gentech ships you NB as is, you have gotten original manufacturer warranty - ASUS warranty.
if Gentech follows your wish and makes some modifications that void ASUS policy, it replace ASUS POLICY with GENTECH POLICY so you will be covered.
FOR DETAILS PLEASE RESEARCH GENTECH WEB SITE.

5 besides of Vista OS, notebook comes with ASUS software suite - for details check multiple reviews, this nforum, ASUS website.
Also notebook comes with pre-installed 30 days trial version of NORTON ANTIVIRUS and pre-installed 30 days trial version of MICROSOFT OFFICE.

6 I have no clue how long. Rumors about 6 days of testing are baseless. If you have ordered original NB without modifications, Gentech does not have reasons to open the box. After money transaction comleted NB is shipped

If gentech does a job with your NB I think it takes no more than 2 days to finish the job including testing.

7 Dead pixels policy is ASUS warranty. Since you have made a research, you know the deal - 30 days and zero pixels.

    I'm looking for manuals now

P.S. There are many things in the Universe...
