It's $1000 at Amazon, where I think it's the cheapest.
On the other hand, I could just get U36SD-A1 at Tigerdirect at $700.
But I want the SSD so bad!
All I notice the difference between XA1 and A1 is the SSD. (correct me if I am wrong)

Is it cheaper to buy the A1 and buy a separate SSD, and make an upgrade?
(Although I don't know how...and it's actually possible to upgrade)

    Thanks!

I think you void your warranty if you install a new HD. Probably worth it to stick with the factory installed SSD. Either that or wait a couple of years to upgrade the A1 - when SSD costs will be down and reliability up.

SSD or hard drive change does not void warranty. You have to break something during the procedure to void the warranty, and it is not that hard to change it--I did it to mine.

TigerDirect does not have it for $700 anymore. I think the XA1 is a waste of money, especially with SSD being cheaper now. Upgrade later.

I agree here. I remember another post that someone changed out their hdd and then had to get something on it fixed from Asus and they didn't seem to care.

You can definitely find a good deal on the U36SD w/o the ssd now and find an SSD to swap out yourself.

But...if you are completely uncomfortable with openning up the entire machine to do the swap then talking about the savings of DIY is moot. Personally if you are looking at 1000 for it then I would consider the ASUS U36SD XH71 which has an i7, 8 gb and Win 7 pro which you can find for about $200 more.
