hey i have a g50v a2 i was playing a game at full graphics (damnation) i had my cellphone just near the side fan grill. after 20 min of play i notice that my cellphone cover was like burning hot like almost burned my hand. So i run a hardware temperature monitoring tool and played the game for about 15 minutes and check out the temps everything looked ok except the graphic card temp. it was 105 o C (221 F) thats like past boiling temp

im wondering if that's normal or is it a serious problem

1) is it overclocked?
2) what are the idle temps?
if the phone was hot, then it would mean the heat is being moved from the case. 105C is the throttling threshold set by nvidia, so its the theoretical max the card can take. mine doesn't go over 93C on load (725/1800/1037 overclock). -
I've learned from research, mostly on this forum, that every g50 is different with heat. Mine with an overclocked gpu only reached 85C once and a month later it reached up to 91C, I bought some as5 compound and a cooler and planted the laptop on the cooler butt naked. Now the gpu never passes 75C.
Some guy has his gpu overclocked as much as me and is said to never pass 83C.
105C is too much though, maybe they messed up something in the assembly line you should turn it over and make sure your thermal pads, paste is applied right. -

@Motok one of the reasons every G50 seems different is we have 2 or 3 different thermal profiles due to the processor. My temps where alot different after the T9600 upgrade, idles lower gpu burns hotter. Oh and the 83C you might be talking about me I never exceeded 83C overclocked on dox drivers until i swapped the cpu. (I did find later hit occasionally hit 85).
110C is the throttle down point. Your out of the comfort zone for sure. Is the laptop under warranty? If not get a can of actual compressed air, some qtips and if your comfortable some good thermal paste while your at it. The heatpipes are easier to clean with the pipe assemblies off the notebook but if not thats part of what the can of air is for. Blowing the dust out of the cooling system and some fresher better thermal paste should help keep temps down.
Your cell phone was hot.... Dont obstruct the path if you can keep it clear I know things within a foot of the left can still feel the heat. But remember the air being drawn in from the laptop is being heated up by the exhaust air so a clear outward path will help.
Also as hot cpu air is cooling the gpu pipe undervolting the cpu can help the gpu out by a couple of degrees at worst at best it can help by a few. -

As per my post, how long have you had it, what model is it (cpu is important), is it still under warranty? At best a year old G50 will probably need the cooling pipe blown out. As i said if its not under warranty thermal paste and pulling the pipe out and the fan out of it to clean would be best.
And yes as the throttle down is 110, 106 is insane. Your idle is High i never idled higher then 50C before the cooler and paste and i idle now in the mid to low 40's. -
yes its under warranty i had it since september 2008 (8 months) infect i already left a inquiry at Asus vip web site n m waiting for a reply
its asus g50v a2
intel Core 2 Duo Processor T9400 (2.53GHz)(not overclocked)(normal mode for the direct console thing)
Nvidia geforce 9700m gt (not overclocked)
4 gb ram 800mhz
200+200 gb hardrive 7200 rpm -

I forgot about the V being the 9700M GT Makes little difference I just have no temp data for it. Being the T9400 makes the whole setup a bit hotter then the P series units.
Under warranty if you value the warranty and can do with out it for a little bit id send it in and let them clean it for you, chances are they wont touch the paste and it is less then a year old.
It is too hot especially since I run a hotter setup in the same temperature room and its running cooler. -

That looks normal for the idle. If the GPU does not downclock after a game (i think motok asked me about this yesterday for some reason after CoD it didnt downclock) then its idle will be high. I have never had this happen I only observed that if a 3d app is running the power mode does not change even if its minimized.
GPU-Z has a monitor tab that shows the current clock speed and temps. -
21C room temp, mine idles at 42-44 (G50V-A1).
because of vista and aero, the 53 doesn't seem unusual... but hitting 105?
maybe they assembly is only partially covering it, but those are usually mechanically put together at the plant, so its unlikely. you could RMA it, but idk if theyll change anything. -
Try a different VGA driver. Different drivers often produce different GPU temps.

btw i like ur overclocking post i might do it once the temp problem is solved -
If that's the case, I'd contact Asus and ask for a GPU replacement. 105C is quite high for a GPU.

thanks for all your reply
i just send my laptop to asus service center for RMA i will hit back once i get my laptop back -
FWIW, I left my laptop on my coffee table (soft, leather top, blocked the fan vent) for a few hours one day and it actually warped some of the plastic on the bottom of the laptop!!
I can only imagine how hot it got. I'm surprised it didn't shut down b/c of the high temp. Amazingly it runs just as good as always and doesn't appear to have any component damage. -
allright i am very satisfied with asus warrenty service i got my laptop back. I thought it would take like 10 to 12 business days but i just got it back in 4 business days (i send it on Wednesday i received a email on Friday saying your product is fixed and shipped out i got it back today at 10.
Inside my laptop there was a note saying somthing like "overheating, changed a few parts(Cpu heat sinks, Gpu heat sinks. Fan error changed parts ") (I dont know if they change the fan or some part to fis the fan)
anyway the problem is fixed i ran the same game again on full graphics(terminator salvation) Played for like 20-30 min and the max gpu temp was 82 C
I tried couple of stress test the max temp i got was 85 C
i am satisfied the max temp droped by 21 C (from 106 to 85)
BTW some people said don't send the original laptop box if u do send it u will never see the box again (the one which hav a cute girl holding a sword) but i still packed my laptop in that box and i got the box back -

Glad to hear that you got your laptop back in working state.
When my cousin (he bought for me) received my X3, the Blu-ray drive is DOA so he had it RMA. It took him 3 weeks to receive the laptop back. He sent it in the box, and received the box, too. But I will never have a chance to touch that box because he has to leave it in USA (when he took it into Vietnam for me).
Is g50v suppose to be this hot
