ah ok i was always under the assumption that 3dmark uses as much resources as possible to get the highest score

I have first hand experience with both machines tasked to do the same things at the same time in the same environment, not just synthetic benchmarking but actual game play. You can try to replicate someone elses environment, settings etc but you will not find a better match then having both machines together.
I would suggest buying a G51 yourself and then comparing them side by side in your home/appartment and then you can make an educated statement based on more than "your gutt". (Thats also if you have a new G71 equipped with a GTX260 and not a 9800M series) -
I know a kid with a G51. His laptop gets to like 90 when playing crysis warhead. My G71 has never hit 84. Plus all the heating issues Ive seen other people talk about in comparison to the G71.
-
And to the poster who asked what games i play, lately i have been playing bioshock and assassins creed, but when i first received my laptop i played crysis for a couple of hours and it didnt push my gpu past 83. And no i am not using a cooler, my laptop is usually on my wooden desk when im gaming. My 3dmarks scores are just a tad over 10k at 1280x1024 while hooked up to an external monitor. -
all warhammer is saying that you can't compare other people's results with yours because even the smallest differences might change your temperatures, so unless both laptops are in the same EXACT environment, take all comparisons with a grain of salt

This is 3dMark06 1440x900, stock 1.255v, default CPU and GPU clocks. No cooler or fan with an ambient temperature of 77ºF. I get 82ºC with a 15% CPU OC and 550/1375/950. I really see no point in doing Furmark since no game will ever get the temps that high, but I guess I'll do it anyways. brb benchmarks
Edit: Wow great resizing there MS snipping tool. In case you can't see it, that's 79ºC. -

This is the furmark stability test xtreme burning mode with 8x MSAA at 1400x900. CPU is at stock speed and GPU is at stock clocks.

No one that I know besides myself has put any effort into sizing these two laptops up against each other regarding the GPU heat. Yeah some folks might throw out a few clock speeds but I don't see folks trying to replicate peoples exact environments (temps, room conditions, surfaces etc).
So saying that Owner 1's G71 (tested in a large 74F room w/ceiling fan, on a large cool laminate counter) did better than random Owner 2's G51 (tested in a small 81F bedroom, on a small cheap particle board desk) but with the same synthetic bench test and GPU clocks (or not) ran cooler is really a misleading or at best incomplete statement. -
Why would you have a g71 and a g51 at once...
And Id like to see screens or something before Id change my views on the temps. Everything Ive seen online and in person besides your claims say that the g71 runs cooler. -

NiR, I hate your temperatures.

Well regardless of if i own a g51 or not I can speak for my own laptop. After playing assassins creed for 2 hours i decided to run furmark i ran it at 16x instead of the 8x that nothing is real ran it at. These are the highest temps my gpu has ever seen.

I hate your temperatures too.

Also applying common sense and logic...if you have a larger cooling area (assuming no inherent cooling issues built into the case and have effective airflow) of the 71 it will keep the temps just a bit lower.
Anyway some on here are turning this into something its not designed to be...lets keep the discussion to what this board was designed for - help and info for laptops...and keep our egos out of it. -

I still hate your temps.
I'm assuming you're seeing no difference in game performance? -

NiR: Those are some incredible temps. IIRC, I'm running a good 10C higher in the same tests - which is pretty weird.
Back on topic: My rationale for the G51 was that it was the smallest laptop with a GPU that would play modern games acceptably. I also prefer the lower res for gaming. I couldn't understand why you would want something bigger that has the exact same GPU - given that (unlike the CPU), the GPU can't be upgraded later on. -
In the interim the new ASUS G51 and G71 were released with the new GTX260M and having suffered through ATI no driver support with the W90 I was instantly interested. Based on my experience with ASUS Customer Support and Tech Support I was not hesitant to purchase their products again, just no SLI or Xfire this time.
Because I just couldn't decide between the two by staring at them in the store. Both had features I liked but I was unsure that the G51 with its smallish CPU would hold up. Not to mention I was hoping that my needs could be satisfied at a sub $1k price tag (G51), but even then it was hard to ignore the G71 at only $150 more given its bigger CPU, increased RAM and screen resolution. Not to mention the wife was growing tired of my constant "new" laptops showing up and then me running back to FedEx I really needed to make sure I got it right this time. Also whatever I decided on I had to be satisfied with for at least the next 2-3 years. (To be single again).
Being a BB Premier Silver Member we have an advantage of an extended return period of 45 days on ALL products (yes Laptops). So no 14 days for us. We also do not pay any restocking fees on products. (they are waived automatically when you do a return fyi).
So I picked up both, not as out of reach as you think for most since you can put them on a CC. Just make sure to return one or both before the end of the cycle.
Thats why I did my side by side. You can search my threads for very long winded (omg me long winded) with my insights into the two. I was really taken quickly by the G71 over the G51 as the screen was better, the CPU ran my daily stuff quicker. Coming from the W90 the G71 looked tiny, the G51 was nice that it didn't pick up every fingerprint and the ports were easier to access than the G71. I am not much of a tweeker, so I even liked the TurboGear 15% more than the 7.5% H4Power OC that the G51 could muster. I really didn't even look at temps to be honest, it seemed only natural that the bigger G71 would be cooler.
Then folks started all the "omG mY G51 is nUcleAR" so I decided for the first time to get HW Monitor and run it while I was playing the games on each of the laptops while I compared the CPU/RAM performance with real hands on just to see for myself. Like those posts first reported I was floored that the G71 would run hotter than the G51. I had to keep doing it over and over day after day. I then hooked up both to my 1920x1080 LCD just to see if it was because the G71 had a higher native res. Nope it didn't matter, the G51 in these instances was still cooler. I mean I even inspected both computers layouts of the CPU in relation to the GPU maybe this was the cause however the CPU was always warmer in the G51 than in the G71 so in essence the G51 GPU was cooler with a warmer CPU.
Now there could be a lot of reasons. Maybe I had a really well built G51 and a poor G71 dunno but my G71 temps were not out of the realm that the one (I think at the time) person who had one (and active on the forums) was reporting. I did notice that the G51 exhaust port is actually bigger than the G71, hmm maybe this helps sure it doesn't hurt.
Now I was like wth, I really like the G71 but its running warmer than that G51? Well prayer answered NewEgg releases the G51VX-X1A. Only $150 more than the G71 now and I get a much better warranty (I like bigger warranties, re:W90) a much better screen OLED (1920x1080) and the GTX260 w/2.53 duo was doing wonders on my 52" it had bluetooth (an odd fit with the stupied Usb doors on the G71). Not to mention the G51 was a bit nicer to mover around the house, as I noticed over the few weeks I had them. So I returned both to BB no issues and bought the G51VX-X1A and I am a happy camper. Do I regret not having the G71GX? No, its still a class act of a machine and I think at the original price it was a better overall buy than the G51VX-RX05.
However now with the unexpeced price hike by BB on the G71GX to match the X1A paired with the added features I have to continue to say the G51VX-X1A is light years a better value than the current G71GX-RX05. Then toss in my experience with the thermal properties and its the cherry on top.
I have no agenda. I have tried to provide a real "typical" user experience. Im no computer guru but I don't wear a padded helmet either. I take the time to write as I do in order to help people more than just throwing around benches (which have value as well).

Just found out that the G51 or it's variants haven't even been released in Australia. I guess I'll get the G71 anyway. I've always wanted a 17".

personally i purchased the asus g71 for the faster clocked proccy and the larger screen, i'm not having any issues with temps and ii got mine with the newer bios, as for double typing issue and the sleep issue, i never use the sleep function so that was no issue, and the double typing i found didn't occur in win7 at all and i never saw it in vista x64.
for overclocking i wish there was a bit more robust cooling involved, my laptop would've benefited from a stock gtx 260m instead of the underclocked version that was given.
for price i did pay the 1300, for the larger screen and faster chip and 6 gigs of memory, i feel it was worth it. Also i kinda am using this for school as well as a mobile gaming station so the lack of the white top disuades people from eying it while it sits in my college classes. i can turn most of the lights off or make them a stable color so i'm not worried about that,
all in all, i've been very happy with my g71 so far, i've only had it a week, but it is comfortable for a 17" notebook, and i've bought asus mobo's for years and love them so this seemed like a stable product and so far it's proven to be so. I wish best buy was a little more fluent in explaining my warrentee options, all i left with was a reciept and that's about it, but hey what can yo uexpect from the the all powerful geek squad. -
I love my G71GX. Two of my fellow marines have it and we enjoy Crysis LANs frequently. Each of us has it customized differently but all in all we all love it.

That's what I don't get, there are only a few G71GX-RX05 owners who really enjoy their purchase. That's why this thread was made... sadly there is only a few owners period...
Both laptops are pretty thick but of course the G71GX-RX05 is bigger than the G51VX-RX05 because it's a 17" laptop compared to a 15" laptop.
Despite both being desktop replacements, people rather have portability (G51VX-RX05) than something slightly bigger to lug around (G71GX-RX05), IMO anything is better than carrying around a full tower desktop.
One of the reasons that there is more G51VX-RX05 owners is due to the thermal fiasco, many previous G71GX-RX05 owners switched over to the G51VX-RX05. It also doesn't help that Best Buy got greedy and decided to bump the G71GX-RX05's original $1149 price tag to $1299.
Now the purchases between the two laptops are determined on if you want a 15" for portability or a 17" for those who want a bigger screen.
It is also determined on how big a persons budget is or how much they are willing to spend, the old $999 and $1149 price tags were a hard decision but the now $1049 and $1299 price tags can sway someone one way or the other... -
I have a 17" laptop backpack and my G51 fits perfectly, very snug. I wouldn't know what backpack you'd need to buy to fit the G71...... -

nice, i've been looking for a bag for the notebook and for school, that will work perfectly, thanx a lot

The Targus backpacks are great, I picked up a Targus Groove CVR617. Fits the g71 perfectly. I can fit the g71 in its sleeve, my usb speakers, power adapter, mouse, mouse pad, xbox wireless controller, Blu ray drive, and still have room for more. I tried a samsonite backpack for 17 inchers and lets just say the g71 is not your typical 17 incher.

I use a Port backpack..cost a bit much (~$300) but will last you many years. I have had one for 5 yrs and it fits the my G17 perfectly (has a padded inside sleeve built in) with all accessories and still is very slim and looks great too!
Is it just me, or does everyone prefer the G51 over the G71?
