Hello,
I would like to order a laptop for my brother in law by tomorrow so my brother in law can have it for his trip late next week. Is it possible to get a W7J in the US now?
Thanks

I am sorry but ASUS does not have these in country yet. We are told it will be late June before we see them.
-
as Donald stated. Highly unlikely. Even ProPortable is putting Early July on their site.
you may want to consider a 12" widescreen or 14" widescreen from Asus as an alternative. -
Thanks - I guess I'll just get a Sony - thanks for confirming.

Justin knows what he is talking about
If ASUS says late June, then you can generally count on early July at the earliest. -

Next week is definitely wishful thinking. I'd be happy if they make it hear by July 23rd!!! (Just in time for my b-day)
Anybody know How the W7J's video card (nVidia GeForce Go 7400) would stack up against the ATI X600 found in the W3V's and V6V's??? -
well, i hear the 7400go performs similarly to the x1400. the x1400 performs better than the x600 but not as good as the x700.
-
Well, I believe that the x1600 is the updated x700. The x1400 is inbetween the x600 and x700. Then the geforce 7400 is comparable to that, so I believe it should be better, maybe not a lot better, but better.

Thanks...that's good to know because now I can at least make some real world, in person, "virtual" comparisons of what to expect from the W7J's 7400 Go when It arrives.
-
The x1600 is more in between the x700 and x800/6600 and 6800, etc.

Anyone interested in a mint condition, 1 week old W7J (white, Core Duo T2400, ram upgraded to 1.5GB) that I bought while in Taipei for Computex.
After using it for a few days, I decided that I don't like the keyboard and touchpad as much as my previous laptop IBM/Lenovo X31. So, I've decided to sell this W7J and go back to IBM/Lenovo
Word of caution though that the keyboard is in English but has chinese characters since it was purcahsed in Asia.
I will also incldue the 2nd AC adapter that I purchased, good if you travel from office/home.
Please send me private message if interested -
Beelzebub may have proved Justin's point about popularity.
In any event, in light of the speculation that the initial shipment may be very limited - do the resellers anticipate allowing advanced orders for them? Or are advanced orders only appropriate when Asus has committed to an unlimited supply? TIA -
Just a note on the popularity and supply/demand of this particular model even in Taiwan, where Asus is headquaratered. Despite the abundance of mom/pop electronics and computer stores in Taiwan, VERY VERY VERY few stores actually had the notebook in stock. Most retailers were reporting a 2-4 week wait just to get one and from the look of it, the model is very much in demand with limited supply.
I was lucky to even find one available. -
Beelzebub81, I was just wondering what it was you didn't like about the keyboard and touchpad. thanks alot.

... it's a 13.3" notebook...... with a small keyboard and just small form factor all around. Usually travelers are the ones to get dedicated graphics in their notbeooks, but the W7 makes it possible....... but there HAS to be some compromise.
-
Justin,
By "small", do you mean that the W7j is a reduced size keyboard... or full-size with a few reduced keys (shift, tab, etc.). I thought the latter but want to make sure. -

Full size kb. With the exception of the non essentials like del end home and such which may be shrunken.

The keyboard on the W5f is fullsized........ infact, I'm almost certain that the W7 keyboard is the same as the slightly larger W3's keyboard....... the W7 just has less room on the sides....... either way, all of Asus' systems now have full sized keyboards from 12" widescreen and up....
... my size comment is based on the size of the notbeook itself and the graphics card that's in it...... that's all. -
Thanks for the clarification. Does anyone have any scoop on the soldered/socketed cpu question for the W7J?
-

No scoop...... Asus swore off soldered CPU's in their retail notebooks after the S5ne....... which was their first "ensemble" in the US after they split whitebooks and complete systems..... They originally did it to save space and weight and it barely did either...... so don't expect to see it in the future unless they end up using ultra low voltage cpus...... but if they do that, they'd be limited by space to begin with and the ULV cpu would be used because the proper thermal envelope couldn't be created......... but at this point, outside of UMPC's... it's not even a question with Asus. I don't even think the S6 has a soldered cpu and that's a much smaller form factor at 11".

anyone know the prices of the w7j in asia? i'm flying over in august, was wondering if its better just to buy it here or overseas.

Is it at all possible that the current white 9 cell W5a/f battery would fit the W7J? Justin, is it possible?
-

I can't tell you that right now actually. From everything I've seen, they honestly probably are the same and we have a ton of 9 cell Black W5 batteries, which would be great...... but I'm just not sure right now.

I cant recall where my review of the z35 is. But in it i recall saying that the battery is the same as the w5 and z33. w7 should have the same battery. So ye i think they will work but the color will not match possibly

I might as well mention this in here as well... the only "problem" is that I think Fremont's pricing on the W7 is incorrect...... They have listed a pricing of $1,499 - but the W7 was always supposed to be placed between the W5 and W3 - both in specification/configuration and pricing.... which would place the W7 at $1,699 --- and that should be a very reasonable price..... $1,499 seems far too good to be true, but it's yet to be confirmed. Asus' notebook PM is at Computex right now and can't verify that pricing.... Hopefully sometime this week we can get some light shed on that matter. -
I'm glad to hear that the CPU will be in a socket (rather than soldered).
As for the uncertainty on the price, I know that will effect some people's decisions, but I'm not too concerned about it. In some ways, it almost makes me feel better if it costs more, because that reassures me that it has high quality components and chassis.
Is it possible to get a W7J in the US by next week?
