I have been dying to get one of these (espec. UX31A or UX32VD) since they first came out, but early reports of QC problems have scared me away.
Reading all of the threads I'm at a lost to determine if:
1) The QC issues have substantially been improved?
2) Asus' customer service has become acceptably responsive?
If I really need a unit I can depend on, is this series ready for "prime time?" (I realize you need to go through 2 or 3 of even mature, well made machines to get a well built, reliable one)
Thanks very much.

Bumping because I think my subject line was misleading. With all the cumulative experience you all have had with the UX31A and UX32VD has there been sufficient improvement in either quality out of the box or Asus support that this can be considered a safe bet with all the initial caveats removed?
If it wasn't for quality or support issues, this would be by so far the best product in its class.
Thanks for any insight.

I don't think anyone can answer. I've read the UX threads on the forum, and there is no consensus (or even discussion) to this end.
The problem is people get one machine. Noone is buying several machines over time to notice a difference. And the anecdotal reports here don't give any statistical picture either.
So much for our advanced post-industrial market capitalism. -
I keep buying and keep getting burned. Its literally impossible to find one with an adata drive which is totally ridiculous.

Thanks for the input. It actually speaks for itself: no improvement yet. Had a nice series of chats with Scott, the Asus rep on the NBR thread. Clearly, that company got too big too fast, and now they've designed an awesome ultrabook but clearly it cannot be produced at its marketed price. It needs more cost to go into higher quality components, better manufacturing technology and more QA rejects. That means they need to charge $300 more or so. I still think they would be the market leader at that price. Flawed greatness.

That's sad. I say we have a bake sale for ASUS.

Most disturbing of all is that this is ASUS's second attempt at building a Zenbook. I didn't buy the first series because of all the issues, and now ditto for the prime. Too bad, because I really like the specs.

i have no real issues with my ux32vd other than the backlight bleed issue.. which is rarely noticeable unless watching a movie or something...
Is it safe to try the UX series yet?
