    hi, i have an OC'ed 9800M GS.

well i used to be able to play games like Dirt2 and Battlefield2 on highest settings.
    now they LAG LIKE HELL.

recently i downloaded fraps and was making videos, but realized i was down to about 20 GB after just like 30 minutes. so i deleted all the videos and emptied the recycle bin. ive used "disk cleaner" and now i have 136GB of 300 GB FREE.

my internet doesnt lag at all, and the videos on Youtube work fine, as well as my movies. its just my games.

i recently removed "AVG antivirus" TRIAL. but i remember it started lagging before i removed it. im not heating up either.

    what could it be?
    my laptop is the g50VT-X5

Check your temps, if your temps are super hi, it could be dying but just lagging doesnt sound like it. Most video cards have a built in thresh hold that if they cross it in temprature wise, it will downclock your video card to allow your tempratures to decrease and will drop you down alot in FPS. If te video card is going bad, you would see red dots, lines, or random artifacts throughout the screen indicating its about to crap out.

    thanx l3g4cy99

my temps are fine (idle at 48C and max 87C)
    its not downclocking either.
i dont see any lines/dots like you described.

im guessing it might be a software issue.
does my RAM have anything to do with it?
    i have 4GB RAM.
anyways, im downloading BitDefender Trial to do a scan, i HOPE i have a virus, so that i can just delete it and get on wit my life.

haha, that could be a possiblity also, but your Ram doesnt sound like it would be an issue. Another good free scan that I use and recommend to others, is the housecall from Trendmicro.com.

I had that problem with mine... it was an overheating issue for me, the gpu would climb up to 100C and start down-clocking, make sure you have more than one software to measure your temps.

Use canned air (while the laptop is off) to remove some dust on the fan and heatsink.

Don't worry, your gpu will not die, mine has been running at 80+C for 3 years without any failures.

My best bet is the drivers, check your drivers and don't use beta drivers, use reliable ones.

    Best of Luck.

I dont think its a gpu failure, I wold think a gpu failure woulds how artifacts, crash, or not work at all.

Your problem sounds like it could be one or more of the following.

    > Virus/Spyware
    > Thermal Throttling
    > Corrupted Install / Drivers
    > Software Conflict

If you do not find a virus, do a image backup and do a fresh install and see how it works. Something may just have gone bad in your OS install.

Sorry to go off topic, but I remember ViciousXUSMC in your g73 review you did a slew of tests on your laptop screen, what app is that?

    thank you Metallic and ViciousXUSMC

Well, I also HAD the problem of overheating and my GPU downthrottling, however, i fixed that and it was working like a charm.

    ****update*****
after the virus scan, from BitDefender, it found 31 viruses and 3 trojans.
i "Quarantined" the trojans, but the laptop is STILL running slow.
i did another full scan, and it says my laptop is clean.
    i already re-booted my laptop.

i AM SURE its a Virus infection, any help?

Is fraps still running? When it records videos, it slows down games IMMENSELY.

Run malwarebytes anti malware it would get rid of any other viruses

If not fraps, it could be HD stuttering.

Launch into safe mode and redo the scans... that's the only time I feel virus deletion is really effective
(Make sure it's Network safe mode so you can still access the internet)

Did you check your drivers, did you install any betas?

Also, go boot up the games, are they running slow even with lower settings that you are used to?

Use Everest "free or ultimate" edition and check out your temps and if your throttling WHILE you are in the games.

Last thing I can think of is Ram, is it available for the games?

Even if you feel it's not an overheating or it's not a software or it's not a virus... go back and do it all over.
Because it's the simplest solutions that we ignore, which leads us to tackle bigger problems that are not there.

Sorry, but even booting into safe mode and scanning there isn't good enough to really remove all the viruses with confidence. There's really no other way to made sure they're gone than to copy off your important files, and start fresh with a new install of windows. It's a pain and a half, but you could spend as long trying to remove the viruses and still miss some. Even after being removed, many viruses will have damaged system files in ways that can cause instability and really any kind of problem one might imagine.

It might be a virus and it might not be. Go to the task manager again and look in the processes tab, and see which one is using the most CPU.

    1.) "firefox.exe*32" is using 50,748K
    2.) "dwm.exe" is using 28,912K
    3.) "explorer.exe" is using 18,488K

the rest are using less than 6,000K

    - "processes = 74"
    - "cpu usage = 29%" (the cpu usage is jumping all around, one second its at 13% the next is at 100%, even if im not doing anything)
    - "physical memory = 33%"

**IN THE APPLICATIONS TAB the only "Task" listed is "Laptop Forums and Notebook Computer Discussi... Running"

**IN THE PERFORMANCE TAB the "Memory is 1.34 GB"(the little green graph)
    IM THE ONLY USER

Hi guys, well it has gotten better for now.
HOWEVER, i went into the BitDefender's "QUARANTINE" are, and found a virus named

    "java.trojan.exploit.Bytverify"
    should i "delete" this?

for now my games are running MUCH better.
im going to boot into safe mode and do another deep system scan.
but ive done about 8 Deep System scans on normal mode, and it all comes out clean.

Yes delete it. Does you no good sitting in there... only risks the chances of it getting out and infecting more and more files doing more damage.

Also, sense you had found a trojan, usually a backdoor program, I would HIGHLY recommend changing all your passwords that you have to ensure it wasnt stolen.

Sounds like it was a root kit that makes your CPU run 100% all the time. Annoying as hell. A great program to detect and delete rootkits is "Unhackme"

LMAO yeah. Evidence. Right. Well, congratulations, you're famous! lol ...

When your computer goes on the fritz, the FIRST thing you do after basic troubleshooting is reinstall. That eliminates 99% of the possible problems (In my experience, it is rarely hardware causing the problem) and you're left troubleshooting with NO worries about virii and such.

Also, there is no excuse for getting infected. Run a good AV, use at least a few of the following: no-script, adblock, common sense and a decent browser. Also, 95% of sites will try and stick you with some sort of trojan, and if you must have HTTP (rather than getting it from a torrent and such), stick to sites you know/trust.

now you know why you should get a proper anti virus? It doesn't matter now as it ended good for you. Just remember to install proper anti virus+ firewall now.
