It looks like Ive got something wrong with my new Z70v. I turned it on, this morning, and received the following error message after the Windows XP Professional screen faded:
STOP: {Registry File Failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (file):
SystemrootSystem32ConfigSOFTWARE
or its log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.
Beginning dump of physical memory.
Physical memory dump complete.
Contact your system administrator or technical support for assistance.
No matter how I try to proceed, (Safe Mode, Last Known Configuration, etc.), this error pops up. Any ideas what I should do? Do I have a bad Z70v?

I hope you're right. Should I reformat my drive and then re-install, or just re-install Windows?
Thanks for the tip!!

Greets.
It is windows fault. Sometimes It gets messed up.
Now you must reinstall your system. I think there is no other solution.
I already had that problem on my desktop PC, and after looking hard I need to do the reinstalation because no other method exists to fix things up.
But maybe i'm wrong. Good luck. -

Try "chkdsk /r" from repair console. if it takes any more then a few minutes its fixing sectors. You should follow up with a tester for the drive. Sometimes sectors can be repaired and flagged and not give you nay problems usually the drive needs to be swapped. If you have data that needs to be saved you will have to attach it to an external usb/fire caddy and back up the data to another pc. Ghosting is not a good idea with a bad drive if its bad. If you knwo the manufacturer of your drive you can find the tester on their website. Download the iso as you prolly dont have a external floppy.

Back up your data and contact your dealer. Ask them for a test disk to test you drive. Ask them for instructions on how to do a repair from repair console if you dont know this already. This does not look like any cannot load message i have seen but generally these come with a drive that is going bad unless this happen after you installed or uninstaled something. This was a message in a black screen right when the windows bar is loading right? Not a blue screen? You dont have a bad z70v. You prolly have a bad drive or very likely need a clean install. Either way you need to run a recertification test on the drive.

Wow, thanks for all the good information, Eddie. This error message actually appears on a BLUE screen for about 10 seconds and then blinks out. After that, I get the black sreen that displays the different options for loading Windows (Safe Mode, Last Known Config...).
I contacted ISTNC, but haven't heard back from them, yet.

Could be as simple as a bad stick of RAM... if you have two sticks in the system, you could try to remove one and then the other. If you narrow that down it would make it easier on your dealer as you could just send back the RAM instead of the entire system and you'd still be able to use it in the mean time.
Try this......
http://ubcd.sourceforge.net/
This is great.... it really is the ultimate boot disk..... every utility you could want to use is on here. Burn the image and try to use that if chkdsk doesn't come up with anything.

Justin

I dont know about your left speaker but if it does not work there is no troubleshooting it. It is defective. As for you windows not installing. There can be 2 reasons why the laptop is not able to copy that file.
1. Bad windows disk. Scratched or bad copy (unlikely)
2. Bad ram. Very easily tested. Ask your vendor for their preffered tool to test it.
3. Bad HDD. Needs to be tested. (very likely)

UPDATE: I can't get ANY disk to run on my notebook. I tried re-installing WinXP, but I get the message "Setup cannot copy the fle BDA.INF" and then the system stops.
First, I have a bad left speaker and now this. Still no response from ISTNC. I'm not happy, right now. [!]

I meant that no disk (i.e., hard or CD/DVD) will work. After the last attempt to re-install WinXP, I saw a screen that said "SystemrootSystem32ConfigSOFTWARE file is corrupt." The screen prompted me to run the repair function on the WinXP CD. I'm running CHKDSK, right now, to see if anything comes up bad.

I think you're right, Eddie. It's gotta be bad RAM or a bad hard drive. I'll definitely ask ISTNC about that RAM test... if they ever call back!!! I know it's a Saturday evening, but it'd be reassuring if I'd get at least some acknowledgement from them.
The irony is that I just submitted a glowing Z70v review to the forum. I specifically complimented ISTNC on their service. I put in a good word for you and Justin, as well.

I just heard from Rick at ISTNC. He said he's seen this problem before, but it always turned out to be a WinXP software compatibiliy issue. Since WinXP won't re-install, he thinks it's the hard drive. I'm sending the notebook back on Monday. He said he'll install a new hard drive and speaker. I hope this works.

I am leaning towards the drive only because i ve seen very little blown ram after the sale in notebooks and the fact that windows xp was installed before. I am almost sure its the drive. Jack Its midnight on the east coast. I am pretty sure Rick does not advertise 24/7 support. If he contacted you back on saturday night the man is dedicated to his customer and is a service superman. Expect the same from most of the dealers you see pop up on the forums! The laptop will have to go back for the speaker but to fix the other issue requires a bit of phone support. You can easily have this fixed with advanced replacement but the speaker is a deal breaker. Aurora i think you are a bit too late on the ram analysis. Justin wins this one. I cant take it no more. The guy has a 802.11 microchip in his brain. Direct Bio-Wireless hook to the forum is cheating!!

No, ISTNC doesn't claim 24 hour support and I didn't expect that. They do say that e-mails are monitored until 11 p.m. I alerted them to the problem at about 2 p.m. It was just a little unnerving to hang all day before getting a response, especially for this kind of problem with a brand new notebook. But, once Rick got back to me, he was quick to try to make things right. I'm satisfied that everything will be okay. Now, I'll just have to deal with the withdrawal pains from being without my Z70v for a few days. [

My Z70v is on its way back to me with a new hard drive and left screen speaker! ISTNC paid for Overnight shipping both ways. Me happy.

It still amazes me how many defects and errors they have to begin with... it's almost as if they're working with a different product all together... It's great that they fix their problems quickly... which everyone thinks is great.... but they have problems to begin with.
Do a search and see how many people have had issues with systems they've bought from them to begin with..... far more than we've had in the last five years. I don't know what it is, but I'm almost sick of people getting their problem fixed and thinking these guys are great...... but 9 times out of 10, actually testing the system would have eliminated the issues before shipping.
Just food for thought.
Thanks,
Justin

I finally got some time to set up my Z70v after getting it back from ISTNC. The first thing I noticed was how much better was the sound now that the left screen speaker was replaced. Next, I saw that what was a 40GB hard drive was now 60GB. That was Rick's way of apologizing for the hassle. Can't beat that!!!
Rick also mentioned that they checked the rest of their Z70v notebooks and found that a few had the same speaker problem as mine. This was a big surprise to him.
Anyway, my Z70v rocks... so does ISTNC!

... well you got the money for it, lol... I know those guys are awfully busy.
Sorry for voicing my opinion, but I just realized after others have mentioned it to me...... that having many issues of faulty products and many returns is not someting that I've associated with Asus' systems in the years that we've been in it. Today I realized by it bothers me.... There's a big company out there that people keep going back to and people think are great becasue when they have a problem they just send a new part or whatever without any question... The only problem is, they shouldn't be having the problem to begin with and people overlook that and actually providing the quick responce to the problem is more important than providing a quality product from the start..... That is the reason we got into this five years ago and seeing it happen with these products (no matter the company) looks bad for the entire line of systems which is not going to be something I'll sit around and watch happen.
You get what you pay for as the old saying goes..... five years of specific Asus laptop experience doesn't hold up to 6 months worth no matter who you are.
Thanks,
Justin

I've had my fill of that big company and all of the problems I experienced with them, but I'm not gonna get into "vendor bashing." True, the best thing would be to receive a notebook that's free of any problems. However, it's when a problem arises that you learn the true nature of any company. ISTNC handled my notebook's problems quickly and satisfactorily. The fact that they upgraded my hard drive from 40GB to 60GB as a way of making amends for the problem was an impressive gesture, in my opinion. Believe me, if something else goes wrong, I'll be returning my notebook for good. As I wrote in my review, there are several trustworthy vendors for Asus notebooks. For now, I include ISTNC in that group.

I'm not about to get into that either....... I'm not making a slight reference which sort of got me going in the first place.... It just seems that the people out there praising them are all people who had issues and got them resolved and they like them more now than before. I'm not a hipocrite and certainly aren't going to say we haven't had problems, but just from the forums...... a lot of coverage they have gotten has been about resolving issues like this quickly when 9 out of 10 of these issues ARE things that could and should have been tested for before shipping.... Something like a bad speaker isn't something that is going to go back in shipping.... I've certainly seen issues with ram and maybe once or twice with an optical drive. I'm not making note that you'd certainly hear from people who didn't great great service.......... you don't hear a lot of that from anywhere that I know of really..... but there is what should be "expected" from service. When you get something that's bad and they fix it, that's just normal and I think it's why you don't hear much about it....... But again, at the same time... I'm not noting those in this forum and notebook forums that have had problems and either returned or had to get their laptop fixed.
It's just a lot of wasted time for the dealer and customer and I know we're not using some special products here and we're not on the "unusual" side of what to expect with an Asus system.. So with that, I'd have to say they're missing something... whether it's testing or perhaps it's ground shipping..... I don't know, but my comment surely wasn't just directed at your problem but documented issues throughout the forums...
Thats all..
Thanks,
Justin

I feel you justin... I've been looking for a dealer to purchase my asus system from and heard alot of things about istnc.com. then I started to look at the customer ratings ...and they were all good but they were all good because they fixed a particular problem. I concluded that...if I buy from these guys...its prob going to have an issue...they will fix it...but chances are high I'll have to send it back.
Now I respect Rick a whole lot...the dude gives waaay over 110% when it comes to customer service...but something just isn't right there yet. Alot of people are happy that the istnc notebooks have zero dead pixels though...and thats gets my attention(I've been burned BAD on this dead pixel thing a few times)...but that's prob more of an asus thing than a istnc thing. He seems like a stand up guy... i hope they get this under control.
but to be fair i haven't checked out any other vendors yet, but justin and eddie..im definately going check you guys out...
The whole thing has got me frozen from making a purchase ...cause I was going to order the system without an OS since I have a never been used copy of XP Pro...but without an OS what kinda testing can be done? why are these left speakers not working? issue after issue...and its now pushed the purchase back until sometime in July...I'm just not comfortable enough to buy one now.
maybe this wait is good for me...I get to through the w2v into the mix of possible purchases(but the prices i've seen for it are crazy)...I don't know

Well at least someone else sees what I'm saying and realizes I'm not bashing anyone but am just unhappy as their problems with Asus notebooks just generally looks bad for everyone else and that isn't something I like.
You look around and find people with systems from us and find out how many of them recieved a unit with as much as a bad pixel and even have one after 1 year, 2 years...... Unfortunately I think there might be 1 person that I know of that ended up with 1 dead pixel even after our standard pixel check during testing... something that can and will happen sometimes during shipping and starting a system that might not be acclimated to the new environment..... that's why the check is a free service and not some guarantee.... But still the great dead pixel free years that we've had only stands to show how good the screens Asus is using because we've only had a handful and I mean 4-5 screens with even a bad pixel in the last 5 years on new systems and only about 3-4 screens that under warranty had any issue..... from 3-4 bad pixels to a row of pixels not lighting up to one screen just playing dead (thats what it did... needed a new transformer..)
If you get a system without an OS, the system itself is still tested with a system hard drive....... your hard drive won't get tested, but those things are tested so throughly from seagate that they put their 5 year warranty on them....... usually not going to be an issue there for you.
Thanks,
Justin

ALL good to know.
now i was thinking about getting one of those hitachi 7200rpm hard drives...i know their fast ..but do I have to worry about the quality of those?
Also on the proportable site.. when i was configuring a Z70v system ..i noticed the only wireless networking option that was offered was an intel 2200 b/g option...
no intel 2915 a/b/g option?
-
PROPortable Company Representative
Hitachi's 7200rpm drives are as high end as they come as well....... you don't have to worry about those...
All 2915 cards for us anyway are all gone till July 1st..... believe it or not, we actually found one client that could and would us the old A standard.... The 2200 and 2915 are both just as new of a card... the 2915 incorporates the older A standard which is today only used in office buildings that incorporated wifi 3 or more years ago basically...... We had an order that took up the rest of our stock and we're basically out till July 1st.....
If you've never used A wifi, you never will...... It was a standard that only worked within one room... singal couldn't go through walls...... the government and large rich offices that were early adpoters of wifi got this......... then centrino came out with B wifi and intel told them to upgrade and they said hell no we just dropped millions into this.....
So honestly, today, most of out systems still ship with 2200's because not many people have a need for A and the only other people getting it just think it's the newest standard, so they want it.... Just so happens for right now we're out.

Justin
