    Wow, I don't think I had those...

In my configsetroot there were some folders with some source code for various programs (like acpi programs) in some of them. In one of the res subdirectories I found many small portrait pics of a guy who by the filename I assume is called "Alvin". I'm not using my laptop at the moment, so I can't say whether he is in any of yours but I'll check later.

    What model do you have?

Did you have any "sensitive" material on yours (as mentioned in the other thread), like many documents and utilities on oem activation, and things on the windows logo program, or cracked software?

I think that file with "random" microsoft codes (which I had too) is some sort of authentication file that is used by Asus when getting keys. I tried to read the activation documents but they were too confusing to me...

I'd send these photos to ASUS administration. ASUS must know the heroes.

In one of the source code folders in my configsetroot directory, I have some thumbnail size pics of a guy who looks the same as one who is in your pictures. I'm going to contact Asus about this. I don't know what else you found in your directory. At the end of the day, pictures are quite harmless, but confidential NDA documents, together with asus source code and pirated software (all of which are in my directory) are something else...

    Guys,

Do not post sensitive info like pictures or files for any reason. I suggest either removing the info and/or contacting asus/the place where you bought the laptop from.

Ok but technically the photos are free release, if hes happy to put them on our laptops he cant complain if they are posted on the net, but i will not argue that.

Did you have to delete all the info on my post though?

Anyways, anyone recieved mail from Asus regarding this?

Well, let's say you have digital signature (or collective signature) of ASUS testers and programmers.

You now what? I'm thinking about other manufactures. They follow the same procedure while installing OS. Do they clean up their feces?
What other folks on this forum have on their machines?

OK for those who are new to this forum, what is the story behind this exactly? Someone found sensitive/irrelevant/obscure files that don't belong in their brand new notebooks?

This could get steamy... involving the legal departments at ASUS.

The story is (this got deleted in first post) i came across a thread in the forums about a folder in windows directory called C:\Windows\ConfigSetRoot.
In this folder i, along with others have found pictures of a guy and friends/family, aswell as Vista codes and programs.

Which my first reaction was that ive bought a second hand laptop, but with others reporting the same pictures it seems its in the software. I dont see why legal departments would get involved, just simply asking why we have these pictures/files.

I have a Asus F3JR, was bought in september, the pictures were taken in march. on a Canon IXY DIGITAL 55.

What year was the photos taken? I'm assuming 2007?
I only ask because I'll try ask my friend working at Asus about this.

It must be that the OEM image Asus used to install the OS on these laptops somehow included these personal photos and other stuff. It's likely a lot of laptops came off the line with this particular OS install that happens to have personal and sensitive information. I would advise contacting Asus if you want to help them out, I'm sure they'd appreciate knowing this stuff got out as they'll want to avoid such goofs in the future.

    LOL!

I also have the C:\Windows\ConfigSetRoot and inside this folder I have a folder named Pics with a couple of photos of random Asian people.

I agree with Andrew, pretty funny really.

I have formatted my laptop since I got it so it must be installed with the Asus recovery DVD. I have a Asus G1S.

    *Edit*

Also some other random stuff in the sub directories like the install files for the k-lite codec pack!?

Bringing this back because i just found these pics on my g1s-x1 from Best Buy... There are 9 fairly high-res pics of pretty much the same 15 people located in C:\windows\configsetroot\pic. All of the pics are taken with the Canon IXY DIGITAL 55. Several of the pics also show a little girl. They're all Asian. They appear to be Korean, which fits Asus. Most of the pics are group shots taken in various venues, even at dinner.

Guess this fits right in with the pic of the girl on the Ipod that's been storming around, eh?

Funny Easter Egg! No complaints from me, I think it's great. Kind of a personal touch. They're pretty obviously Asus employees somewhere along the way and hopefully still are.

    Asus is a Taiwan company
