    Hey guys,
I was really close of purchasing the Asus N550 with the 750m gfx card
But was told that I should wait till the N550JK version comes out ( with 850m gfx )

Is it worth the wait? Is there a estimated time release on it? When I called Asus they told me June, but the guy didnt sound confident
Also what else is new with it? Is it just the gfx?

    Thanks :D

EDIT: meant to say Asus not Nexus in the title

That depends on whether you will need the extra potential the 850M carries or not. It's of the new Maxwell architecture, unlike some of the other 8xxM chips currently, which is not only a nice performance boost over the 750M predecessor, but it also runs quite a bit cooler and is easier on battery consumption.

Not sure on availability though. ;)

I couldn't wait on a new PC, but I always get the "should I have waited" thing in my mind when I see stuff like this. I think, dang a better graphics card, crap. I didn't know about this new one till now. I have the ASUS N550JV-DB72T. But I always try to figure, I could wait and wait, then guess what about the time a better one comes out or shortly after, something better than that comes out, lol. If I did that I guess I would never buy anything.

But if its much more powerful in terms of graphics and you are a gamer, then I too would be wondering if the release was close. I myself would kick my own butt had this post said it was coming out this month or something (even though I do not play games much).

Love the build of the model I got though! Only needs an SSD.

You can use replace the stock drive or replace the optical drive with a caddy.

Sorry I'm a noob when it comes to laptops
What exactly do you mean by optical drive?
The stock drive is the HD that it comes with right?

I'm in the same situation right now. I need to buy a new laptop but I'm waiting for new nvidia's 800x to come out. If I know it will be June+ for sure I'll buy now the 700x series, 2 months wait is too much lol
However, there is already an Asus model with a 840m being sold (in stock!) in amazon.de, so I'm afraid it won't take that long for N550JK as well

Does anyone know how it was last year? Since they released the nvidia's 700x, how long did it take to be in the market? Meaning, Asus, Dell, HP etc. selling them

I guess he means you can just replace the stock drive with an SSD. Second option is to replace the optical drive with an SSD as well so you end up with 2 drives, the SSD for OS and the stock drive for mass storage.
Pitty that this model DOESN'T (and it won't) have an msata port... :(

optical drive (ODD or Optical Disk Drive) is the DVD burner (or in some cases Blue Ray/DVD)
yes stock was referring to the HD in the machine. They really should have added mSATA on these though. So to upgrade to an SSD you would need to remove the Hard drive and replace it with an SSD, but keep the stock HD if it needs to be sent in for warranty. I might soon do this on my model.

I wouldn't put the SSD in the ODD bay though because I was told it was SATA II and the spot where the HD is currently was SATA III, so might as well as get the full performance, right? In that case you could put the SSD where the HD is and add another HD for storage where the ODD is. There is also a WD Black HD that has a 120GB SSD for the OS/APPS and a 1TB HD for storage, but think it is a little thicker and the BIOS does not see the 1TB drive, so have to install drivers once the OS is installed to see it. I am just looking at a Samsung 250 or 500GB SSD.

Anyone have any updates for the OP on the N550JK coming out?

ASUS N550JK-DS71T is listed at Amazon.com now for $1099, but its temp out of stock, so can order and wait till in stock if want one. Has GTX 850M. Glad I don't play games much or would be mad I didn't wait, of course I didn't know about it. But wish I had known was coming out this soon, GTX 850M I think is a big jump up, right?

How much better is the GTX 850m over my GT750m? Wish they would make these cards changeable, but that would cost more, weigh more, be bulkier and they want us to buy a new one every so often, lol

The N550JK is available here in Hong Kong with the beefier GTX 850M. Thing is, it costs another 2,000 HKD which is equal to 258 USD. Is that extra graphics horsepower worth it? Answer will depend on your own intentions and budget :)

In the US it is only about $115 US more. Myself I would have paid that much EASY! In my research "I think" the GTX 850M is much better than the GT 750M, Wish the 750M in the N550JV was GDDR5 rather than GDDR3 (750M has both versions but ASUS opted for the cheaper one in the 750M) cause I think that would have made a big difference. NVIDIA website shows the GTX 850M can have GDDR3 or GDDR5, if the N550JK has the GDDR5 version then it should have much higher performance on games when running 1080P. I have read that GDDR3 can be a bottleneck running at 1080P.

Personally I think the 750M with GDDR3 is like a multimedia laptop with some game usage and the GTX 850M with GDDR5 memory would be geared more for gaming at full 1080P than the GT 750M with GDDR3 video ram would be. Again I am not a big gamer so hope someone else chimes in on this, but in my research this is the opinion I have came up with.

For HK price being $258 more US, then I guess that depends on your use. If you are a gamer then yes I would spend it. In the US right now the price is less of a difference. Enough less that I had it been able to pre-order on Amazon while waiting on stock when i got mine I would have paid the extra for the N550JK for sure. And I am not a gamer, but like cars etc. I want power, add-ons, speed etc, plus it helps the resale value I would imagine and I upgrade every so often.

But what I saved will just go towards an SSD very soon anyway.

I just hate the "buyers remorse" when it is this soon after buying my N550JV that I see a version that seems to be an exact copy of mine but has the GTX 850M. Dang it! Guess your HK price can vary too cause there are several options on the N550JK, like 5400RPM hard drive like Amazon has listed or some can have 7200RPM hard drive which would obviously be better, although not worth the cost really since an SSD is a must for this machine to take advantage of the CPU etc better.

Does the GTX 850M in this laptop have DDR3? Cause the GTX 850M is made with DDR3 and DDR5, if it is ddr3 then I am not as upset this model came out right after I got mine with the 750M. The specs on one site selling it (backorder) says DDR3, why they would even use that in such a nice laptop and have the GTX 850M is just dumb. Of course ASUS could have and should have made mine with the GT 750M with the DDR5 version.

Maxwell does have a few technologies to help it use less bandwidth so it should still perform very well.

The GTX 850M or GT 750M or both? Now that the JK is out, I wish I had known about it, I would have waited since I have only had my laptop since March 27th.

I just snag the ASUS N550JK-DS71T from Amazon earlier today and should be delivered sometime tomorrow since I paid overnight shipping for it. I really believe that the Maxwell gtx 850m with the ddr3 version should still be significantly faster than the Kepler ddr3 650/750m possibly as fast as the gddr5 gtx 760m or similar to at least the gtx 660m or gddr5 755m. The reason why I say that is the gtx 850m gddr5 version is as fast as the gtx 765m.

But I will let you guys know once I get it and will do some testing over the weekend if time permits.

In the meantime, check this review out which uses the same ddr3 gtx 850m Maxwell. It's saying that it is even faster than the gtx 760m and almost close to 765m.

Read some games are 2x as fast with the new gpu. Glad Im not a big gamer or I would be pissed at myself. Oh well. Guess If I wanted a gaming laptop the GTX 870M or GTX 880M would be the way to go anyway.

I did read, (maybe you can confirm this when get yours, that these are other updates)

    1. The display for good (or bad) is no longer made by LG, but right now is made by Samsung.
    2. The Wifi / Bluetooth combo is made by Intel (previously by Atheros). Which might be an improved 802.11ac with support for Intel's WiDi.
    3. Touchpad has newer, updated version.
    4. Memory is bumped from 2 x 4GB to 1x8GB (which makes you easier/cheaper to upgrade the RAM to 2x8GB if you want).

Hey " Benchmade 42" can you post some passmark scores and 3dmark for graphics after you get it? All suggested specs I see on it are referring to the GDDR5 version.

Ive seen it at newegg.com and amazon.com. it does sell out but its for sale again right now as im writing htis.

in general the difference between 2g and 4gig in the 850 gtx should be nothing. in fact i dont believe it is available in 4gig

because lg owns the right to ips, the us version of this laptop has to have an lg display.

the us version of the 17 inch version of this laptop the g570 jk, it has a samsung display with samsungs wording of ips in it. look at asus.com

they are the same thing but name branded. ips means lg.

The GTX 850M is made as 2GB and 4GB versions I think and I know for sure it has DDR3 and DDR5 versions, in this laptop ASUS used the DDR3 version from what I have read. Which I think is a shame, but from everyone is saying it is still a real good gaming upgrade over the GT 750M.

Sorry to hijack the thread but I noticed 3 versions in the UK:
Asus N550JK-CN111H (costs 50 pounds less)
    Asus N550JK-CN042H
Asus N550JK-CN043H (costs 100 pounds more than the CN042H)

On Amazon's UK sites the listings are identical. Can anyone enlighten me?

Moreover how is the battery life for this machine?

The US version selling on Amazon has a Mat5hita DVD-RAM drive... I decided to part with mine after I received it though, didn't realize it was a pound heavier than my older laptop... only briefly tested it, see the buy/sell/trade forum if interested. One odd thing I noticed was that it shipped without a touchpad driver installed, but the touchpad is definitely a Synaptics unit.. The wireless card is an intel 7260 AC... which comes integrated with bluetooth. The touchscreen glass does add a 'glossy' element to the display.... not too noticeable if you bump the display brightness when you have office-style lighting nearby. Didn't see any backlight bleed from my limited testing.

The NVIDIA GTX 850M is indeed the 2GB DDR3 version.

Thank you for the information about the optical drive. That is not a deal killer, but I am sad it was not a Blu-Ray drive. Since they position this as a multimedia/entertainment laptop, you would think Blu-Ray player would be included these days. My Sony Vaio from 2009 included Blu-ray disc.

You could easily purchase a Blu-ray reader or burner as you see fit, shouldn't be hard to install at all. I've done it on other laptops I've owned. Something in the 9.5mm form factor should do it.

Just ordered the N550JK-DS71T from Amazon....next day shipping so I should get it tomorrow.

Pretty excited. I think I will give it some time to see how it performs, but will probably upgrade to 16GB of Memory and an SSD in the future.

Those that have yours, can you comment on the HD speed?

Also, does it come with one 8GB stick of RAM, or 2 4GB sticks? IE, in order to upgrade, would I need to buy 1 or 2 sticks of 8GB RAM?

What is the speed of the connection in the optical drive?
