I was considering buying the Asus UX31 with the i7, 256GB SSD.

    http://www.amazon.com/Zenbook-UX31E...C9LA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325793389&sr=8-1

As a college student, I can't really use a desktop, and I do a lot of video editing for my major. (Adobe Premiere, Photoshop, lots of video conversion, etc)
With that I'm looking for a powerhouse that's also portable and I was wondering if the Zenbook would fit my needs. Also, has anyone had experience with their Asus UX31's overheating? My current HP Envy is running an i7 and it gets incredibly hot while I'm working, and I don't want to see those same effects if I upgrade to an i7 on the Zenbook.

Tips and opinions would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Video editing seems like it's something that needs lots of memory, you might want a box with more than 4G of RAM. Also, video uses up lots of disk space, and the SSD is going to be smaller than a cheaper hard drive. You're paying quite a price premium on the UX31 for it's small size, but your stated purpose implies that a gaming or desktop replacement laptop might be more appropriate (and more cost effective). If you aren't trying to take the laptop to class for taking notes, you probably should direct your money towards performance rather than portability.

However, I am using my UX31 for playing Elder Scrolls:Skyrim, and it's doing ok. The i7 and HD3000 graphics are able to handle the load, though not as well as a gaming desktop would. The constant high CPU and GPU load is not causing any overheating problems at all, and while the fan runs constantly while under load it's not too loud. The specific Core i7 model we got is designed for low power consumption to help battery life, but that also means it's producing much less heat. The aluminum case also seems to help with heat management, I can't feel any hotspots with my hands after playing for a couple hours. So I think overheating is simply not gonna be a problem for this box.

Hmm I see. Hate to ask, but do you have any other laptop suggestions I can look into? I know portable and power is hard to come by, but I've been considering the Asus U36SD-XH71

What's the max weight you'd be okay with?

I was looking at one of these for my wife , just how solid are they. She has a tendency to break laptops.

Based on my experience with questionable build quality (brand new $1200 laptop in for 2 week repair) I would NOT recommend the Zenbook or Asus.
