I was really considering on getting the G72GX-A1... I like the full HD resolution of 1920x1080.. But i have a few concerns about the ability of the GTX 260m, being able to run newer games at that resolution level without useing GDDDR5 like the GTS 250m in the Toshiba Qosimo X505-Q850 does.. As i have seen reports of the G72GX choking on "some" newer games at high detail setting and not being able to play at ultra resolutions, and thats with a 1600x900 screen and a Q9000!
I think having GDDR5 for a larger screen will matter, just check out this youtube video of a Qosimo X505 with the GTS 250m clocked up to factory Nvidia specs.. It's easily puts up 10,691 on 3DMark06.. That's very impressive for that card.

I am also worried that that the Q9000 quad chip in the G72GX models is locked by Asus and cannot be clocked up liked the P8700 models.. Is that true?
Anyways.. Should i be worried about trying to game at 1920x1080 with the G72GX-A1? Is the GTX 260m GDDR3 near the end of its life span as more higher full HD resolution notebooks hit the market.. I have a 1080p samsung HDTV that i use for gaming, it sure would have been nice to play games at its native resolution.

I guess it depends on your subjective opinion of a playable game. With my g51vx Q9000 at 2.4ghz stable (this ones overclockable, pretty sure the g72gx can be too) and the GPU boosted somewhat, I still need to keep my resolution below 1600x900. Older games I can run full out all maxed and it handles great but newer games from COD4 and on, I tend to keep the resolution quite low. Lots of action gets very choppy for me.
I'm sure other people will differ on this and play at 1920x1080p on newest games but personally the frame rates aren't acceptable with this hardware.
Which games do you plan to play, some are optimized better than others. -
My favorites are World In Conflict, Call of Juarez, GRID, Crysis Warhead, and Gears Of War.. I think GRID is awsome!
So the Q9000 can be overclocked to a stable 2.4 (wow).. That would bring it close to having perhaps a QX9300?? What did that add/change your 3DMark06 cpu final score to? Mmmmmm.. Makes me wonder if the cooling system in the G72GX-A1 can handle the heat increase? As i stated before.. I read somewhere that asus locked the overclocking on the Q9000 in the G72GX.. Maybe the Q9000 sheds more heat than a P8700?
*I'm still trying to decide how futureproof purchasing a G72GX-A1 w/Q9000/GTX 260m would be right now? I also noticed that the G72GX-A1 is shipping with DDR2 ram.. Is that because that's the highest the G72Gx-A1's Intel's chipset can handle? DDR3 would have been a nice future upgrade! -
So what if they lock it? We have setfsb.
-
there is no noticeable benefit in DDR3 ram from DDR2. At all. And no laptop that comes with DDR2 can be upgraded to DDR3. Not because of chipset limitations, but because of slot limitations- the slots are different for DDR2 and DDR3
-
I play on my 42" 1080p LCD all the time. Card works great... any source title maxed, MW2 maxed, Crysis okay-ish, etc.
-
-
We can ALWAYS OC higher with setfsb. Hence, Asus oc tool is not necessary.
-
*So what is the highest reported GTX 260m 3DMark06 score useing a Q9000, and is it higher than a clocked up P8700? -
There are games that will make it chock like crysis maxed out, even my desktop cant handle that well, so a laptop with a 260m (9800gtx equivalent), will have tougher time, but not that many games are that demanding, when i used to have my G71 i didnt see a game i coudlnt handle maxed out (1440x900), but 1920x1080 is another league. Here is some COD MW2 on 1600x900,

Thats said i probably would wait for ASUS G73JH-A1, same price but comes with i7 and ATI 5870.

Darth Bane Dark Lord of the Sith
10,691 for 1280 x 800 is not that impressive, the 260m is capable of much more then that. (like 12,000+ at 1280 x 1024) -
WOW!!! Thanks alot.... Didn't even knew it existed.. The G73JH-A1 is exactly what i am looking for!Last edited by a moderator: May 6, 2015 -
lol get it, goddam i want a desktop 5 series though lol.
btw, my G51Vx-A1 handles everything so easily. i NEVER (and i repeat...NEVER) play @ lower than 1080p and i dont have any problems with games except GTA where i get like 25-35FPS. other games are all above 40FPS...including....
btw CPU is usually @ 2.375GHz, GPU @ 585/970/1475
- Left 4 Dead 2 (maxed except 8xMSAA instead of 16xQSAA) = 40-60FPS
- TF2 (maxed, 4xMSAA instead of the highest) = 40-60FPS
- COD4 (completely maxed) = 60FPS
- COD - MW2 (maxed except only 2xAA) = 50-60FPS
- Borderlands (some settings on medium, no AA, high shadows/textures/occlusion) = 40-60FPS
- GTA IV (high textures/shadows/texture filtering, medium rest, 40 view distance, 65 detail distance, 4 shadow density, 50 car density) = 25-40FPS
- bioshock (maxed) = 60fps
- NFS - shift (maxed) = 60fps
- GRID (maxed) = 60fps
- call of juarez (maxed) = 60fps
hope you get an idea...personally im EXTREMELY happy with the perf. of the GTX 260M compared to what i thought i was going to achieve. it performs above what i expected...but i want more power still cuz im greedy!
Is the G72GX-A1 going to be Choking at 1920x1080??
