What I mean is, is there an open mini pci-e port in the bottom panels?

For a WWAN, or 3G card or something?

Only if you have a model that lacks bluetooth like the X1 would you have a free mini pci-e on a G50

EDit: I was wrong about this see below :(

Ah, there's 2 slots inside the G50, 1 supposedly for wireless card, and 1 supposedly for bluetooth. Correct?

Actually I'm wrong. It looks like there is only one pci-e slot and it is used by the intel wireless card. Bluetooth plugs into a USB header.

    Reference this guide: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=318551

Yea I just had mine open and I want to say you got the wireless one, and than to the top left their is another unused one... I know the bluetooth is not PCI-E though...

So you should have a spare open slot.

This could have been for either the TV Tuner missing or just a spare as the tuner may have been a USB header also... who knows with Asus... Could have even been for the turbo ram or something, lol

Ok that's great, if there was only 1 mini pci-e, I couldn't add my WWAN card.

    Thanks!

Ahh.. Well the next issue than is the antenna.. Just because it has a spot dont mean it will be good. It does not really have any good spots to put any antennas for it.

My WiFi card uses 3 antennas they already have in it. The original Wifi uses two but I traded my 5100 for a 5300 because the third antenna plus was already at the spot and wired.

For WWan have not ever checked how they do it.

Not possible, they use their own wireless each...

The WWan is for cellular wireless like Sprint or Verizon wireless internet.

I got my Intel 5300 wifi from Amazon for like $25 shipped... The notebook came with a 5100... Only diffrence is the notebook has a 3rd unused wifi antenna wire which they tape to the card. The new card (5300) uses all 3 and also has like 50-75MB higher bandwidth total, which to average user does not matter because your internet is only going to do but so fast... I use my laptop connected to a true WAN that gets full 1gb internet access so every bit helps me. :p

Also the average router cant handle the speed that high anyway.

But if you look @ intel and compare the 5100 and 5300 thats only two diffrence. 1 more antenna and higher bandwidth. I just figure for $25 maybe the third antenna will help a little with signal, and more speed never hurts... Uses the same drivers and the wifi switch works still as does the light.

ic, well if the 5300 card uses all 3 antennas wire then what happened when you install a bluetooth card? bluetooth does come with an antenna too right?

My notebook had bluetooth built in... I have the G50vt-a2...

But the bluetooth hooks in via USB header... I dont know if maybe it just has the antenna built in the unit with it or what... You can prob look at the g50v dissassemble guide to see it.

But the 3 antennas are for WiFi... I guess its good asus left all 3 in tact but yet they chose to be cheap and put the 5100 in it... Prob would have cost them a whole $5-$10 more to use 5300... Thats like I dont know why these higher end G50vt have T9400 in them, why didnt they just use the p9500... Same speed/specs but use 10w lower power and run cooler... Would have cost them about $10 more to build the notebook but battery life would be better and cooler... They do some great things, but than do some dumb things... The processor and wifi are so close in price to what they actually used... But I guess in the end these are still GREAT DEALS! lol

Bryanu, do you think i can get that type of bluetooth on asus website or anywhere else? i know that all the g50vt series are the same, just that the x1 version had been stripped down that's why it was cheaper. but everything is the same as the a1/a2 version. even the bluetooth light in the front is there too just not lid up cuz it doesn't have bluetooth connected. there's a jack behind for a modem too and it was blocked.

I am sure Asus can get it seperate, just a matter of getting them to sell you one... Also note that they would possibly void your warranty for modifications, even though I know its dumb and their own parts... Its all marketing...

I had them willing to send me a replacement LCD for mine before I just sent it in for another issue I had... They didnt want to send a screen because the high value but I was able to con them into it telling them I repair notebooks & computers for a living (which is true) and offer to give CC for insurance.

But they have an online parts store.. Dont know the direct link but you can check on it. Could also try to call them and make up something like you have a G50v thats not under warranty but would like to purchase a part for it. Just try to not give them your SN and they wont know. :)

So can somebody confirm whether or not there is a spare PCIe slot? I know one is taken by the wireless card, but I would like to add a spare SSD I have sitting around :)
