I just received my new ASUS notebook today. Super Thrilled ! ! !
I'm curious about one thing.
The badge on the back says "M6800N". The little warranty sticker above it says M6800Ne.
Is this an "N" or an "Ne"? I know that there is a difference, but not exactly sure what it is. I thought that the M6N had the ATI9600 and the M6Ne had the ATI 9700.
How can I check to see which card is installed? In the device manager it just says 9600/9700 series. Can someone help?
Thanks

OK, a couple things.
-The M6000N is the series.. If the warranty sticker says Ne, then thats what it is.
-The ATI 9600/9700 series is really one chipset. The 9700 is just clocked about 100mhz faster I believe, out of the box. You can clock the 9600 that fast if you wanted... nothing something you can really tell just by looking at it.
-The graphics card is dedicated, but it's part of the motherboard.
-There should be an ATI sticker on the palmrest.... legally whatever it says is what it is. If it says 9700 you're set.
Thanks,
Justin

Justin, as usual, very helpful. Thank you.
So busy inspecting it that I missed the ATI sticker. It says 9700.
Maybe this topic will soothe someon else's concern in the future.

Haha... I get that lot. I've got a funny story, sorta off topic, but funny none the less. First though, if anyone in this forum did this, I'm not trying to put you down....
Anyway, I've dealt with it's got to be more than a dozen people who call and start complaining that their computer doesn't charge. Our customers are a step above those who are going to dell... they atleast knew to plug the ac adapter in..... The problem was they weren't pushing the ac adapter in all the way.. The ac adapter on all of our systems really clicks into place and it's really secure... Apparently no one was really coming from something of that quality.. So I say, is it plugged in.. of course they say... "what am I stupid? if that was the problem I wouldn't have called." So when I tell them you have to actually push the adapter in till it clicks, I can hear the little click over the phone and then they feel like an idiot and hang up..... it's ok, stuff like that happens and people over look the simplist things.
Thanks,
Justin

To be sure you can also check ASUS probe or ASUS winFlash, these will say either N or Ne. Thats how I found out that they had "accidently" replaced my Ne motherboard for a N, thankfully they fixed it up pretty quickly !

Well, I said "legally", I wasn't taking into consideration people who were trying to decive you. Did your notebook go in for service and they swap the motherboard for the wrong one or something?
Thanks,
Justin

It's most definitely an "Ne" since it has Radeon 9700...
My M6800Ne also says "M6800N" on the back, but I know it's an "Ne"

- lol people also complained about their M6 batteries not charging....sometimes the battery doesnt connect properly because there too much of a gap, so asus sent out these little plastic sticky things to put in the gap of the battery where th white clip goes into to keep it tight.
- good news too, asus is now using the M6Ne mainboards for replacement for an M6N faulty mainboard under warranty, so you get a free upgrade rom 9600 to 9700

You may wanna take alook at one of the many reviews of the 9700, the 9700 utilises a newer core, the M11 compared to the M10 on the 9600, which allows it to be clocked higher for both memory and core than the 9600, this also results in higher fill rates etc. I'm guessing that a higher clocked 9600 could perform as well as a 9700 stock, but this would create alot more heat, and a less stable system, compared to a 9700, and should be done at your own risk...personally I would strongly advise against it unless you improve the thermals of your notebook. Are a few fps really worth it??? Buy some more ram its a bigger speed boost.
"The main advantage ATIs MOBILITY RADEON 9700 has over its predecessor is 0.13 micron low-k manufacturing process it employs. ATI and TSMC claim that low-k allows chips to consume less energy while working on high clock-speeds, presupposing that 450MHz MOBILITY RADEON 9700 will not consume significantly more electricity over its 350MHz predecessor. Furthermore, generally lower power consumption leads to longer laptop battery life in 2D modes"

I hope this helps a bit and clears up this miss-information floating around the forum that the 9600=9700 and that you should overclock or your stupid...its false and could result in serious damage to a laptop.

no probs...glad to have helped. I think most of these rumours were started over at the dell section, with 8600 users peeved that there laptop wasn't the fastest and didn't come with a 9700...maybe...I guess dell owners don't care if there laptop blows up...maybe they look better after a bake?? lol

I don't know if thats how it works down under..... but Asus isn't replacing M6n boards with Ne's at all here... and probably won't for a couple years until they run out of old boards.
So don't get all excited and send your notebooks in claiming their dead.... it won't get you anywhere. []
Thanks,
Justin
