Hey guys, I've had the N81VP for about a year, and while I love it, the damn thing overheats when I play newer games. I'm not sure how to handle this problem; should I sent it back? Get a laptop cooler? Clean it out somehow?

    Thanks for the help.

i want to bump this thread to see if anyone has any solutions. when i play sc2, the cpu temp goes up to 98c, gpu 129c. i also assume that it goes higher because my laptop has shut off due to high temperatures. has anyone found a solution to this? i've cleaned and elevated the laptop with no improvement.

You can always try a notebook cooler to see if that helps, but with an issue of constant overheating like that I don't know that it will help much. It could be an issue of too much stress on the gpu with the newer games or it could even be faulty components. Have you run any monitors (I use the CPUID Hardware monitor to check my temps) to get your temperatures at idle as well as when it is running at full load?

i have monitored the temperatures. the idle temp is pretty normal at around the mid to high 40s. but when the laptop runs at full power playing games, the temps explode up to the temperatures mentioned above (cpu 98c, gpu 129c). i did order a notebook cooler but with temperatures that high, i doubt it will fix much other than cool it a few degrees.

Most possible is that either the thermal paste is not really "functional", or the heat pipes are not really in their supposed place. Try opening up the PC, and see if the heat pipelines are on the GPU and CPU. And if you open, replace the paste.

@illway This also applies to you.

thanks, i will try that. so it's pretty much a hardware problem and not like a driver issue?

and yes, i am pretty sure the temps are in Celsius. i have both speed fan and cpuid to confirm the readings.

upon further examination of my laptop, i noticed the ventilation next to the fans was clogged with dust. since this area was pretty hidden from the rest of the cooling system, it was hard to notice. i took a paper clip and spent about half an hour cleaning out the air passageways and the temps dropped dramatically. for anyone else that is struggling with this problem, check the vent directly next to the fan.
