I'm having a issue with no CDs, CD-Rs, DVDs, DVD Rs etc.. loading. I think probably it got damaged in the shipping because it did come all the way from California to Georgia and the box was kind of damaged (Thanks UPS).. However, Im wondering maybe it could be a driver problem or something but I cant seem to find any drivers to download for the dvd drive..

I put a DVD or CD in and the drive says theres nothing in it. :\

Any help would be appreciated because Im saddddddd right now after looking so forward to getting my notebook :(

This is my first laptop so I dont know if Im putting in the DVD right or what...yes dumb but the tray doesnt eject all the way I have to pull it out or is this common with ASUS laptops? Anyway, the point is every disc I put it still says "please insert disc"

Right, the tray doesn't come out on any laptop since it's not fully actuated (it can only do the bit of push to get the first inch out, then you have to pull it).

    I suggest trying:
    - different brand DVDs and CDs
    - video DVDs

if nothing works, you have either bad hardware or bad firmware on the ODD.

You can try updating the firmware (can be pretty difficult with some drives) or just get an RMA number, unscrew the drive, send it to them and wait for a replacement.

Forgot to say: if you're running Vista try also disabling UAC before anything else. Some people have had the UAC (user access control) conflicting with the ODD.

One sure way to tell if it's software is to try booting a bootable CD (such as the recovery CD, or a Linux Live CD)., If it works, it's pretty surely Windows.

I had the same issue with the DVD drive of a W7J. Got an RMA from Asus Canada and they replaced the optical drive. The official reason given was "the laser housing's transmission was broken"

Maybe still try the other things I suggested before RMA?
