I have a W3J (not merom), 1.83 GHz CoreDuo, 2GB RAM bios 2.11. Previously running XP Pro, I did a clean install of Vista Ultimate, applied all the drivers/apps from ASUS, no problems at all, Hotkeys working as they should and everything is running smoothly, well almost..

Firstly, the fan never kicks in, resulting in an overheated machine that eventually shut itself down. However, If I do a restart on the running machine, the fan starts but never stops, it runs constantly instead.

Secondly, in XP, P4G used to change its mode automatically, i.e. if on battery, running in powersaving mode and AC power was plugged in, High performance mode was automatically activated. With Vista and P4G Extreme, I must change it manually. Also the settings for LCD brightness in the different modes seems to have no effect, this also has to be changed manually.

I have now returned to XP and fan and powermodes working correctly again so it shouldn't be a bios problem...

If anyone can shed some light over these problems I'd be very grateful!

    /Ola

Seems the ACPI driver has issues. I suspect the following happens. When the machine is not hot, the BIOS will turn off the fan right after POST, and Vista will 'forget it' like that. When you boot up the computer after overheating, the BIOS will not turn off the fan but leave it on to cool the system. Vista will 'forget it' like that.

About power4gear, you could use an alternative such as RMClock that has no issues reported with Vista.

Other than updating ACPI drivers (I suppose you installed the latest Vista version) I don't see any other option... I could suggest software for explicit fan control, like SpeedFan, but I wouldn't bet that runs fine on your hardware and with Vista...

You could check if there are other ACPI driver versions on the ASUS website, even older than what you have, and try those out.

Thanks for pointing me in those directions, I'll investigate further.
