I am going to try and do a real review after I finish doing all the Windows stuff and installing all my programs.
It looks really cool in person imo, and it is not too heavy.
At this point, the only downside, like many others have said, is that it gets hot.
Not really warm, but hot, lol.
The hottest of the heat comes from the middle right portion of the bottom of the keyboard (in the front). It is very hot (same, if not hotter than the Sony S series). I haven't installed CHC so I can't tell what the temps are, but I am running off of the AC power and am using the HD constantly, so it is not surprising that it is so warm.
All in all though, I am very happy thus far....it is a lot snappier than I had hoped (1.8ghz and 1gb ram).

Take lots of pics!

Oh, I will....I was going to of the packaging (very nicely done by geared2play), but I couldn't wait, lol.
I'll take some once I am done with all of the mundane installations. -
I'm sure once you get CHC all configured...it shouldn't be AS hot (but still noticably very warm)
Congrats on your purchase -
Ahh, the voice of truth.
Yea, as soon as I got CHC installed, it started giving me these dire warnings since my HD was at 56 degrees Celcius.verheat:
So I disconnected AC power and turned it to Max Battery, and now I am at 43 for processor and 50 for HD....and I hope with some undervolting it will go even lower.
But good lord, is this screen ever pretty!!11 :asus: :asus: :asus: -
congrats on the new notebook. I've had my z63 for about a month now and love it. I undervolted mine and the fan stays at low speed almost all the time now. The only heat issue I've had is the HD cover on the bottom can get pretty scortchy after a while. My HD temps always look good though according to mobmeter so I'm not worried. And the palmrest always feels nice and cool.

Are you using CHC?
What are the HD temps that you get?
Mine seems to hover around 50C, and when I have had the AC plugged in it goes over 55C (highest has been like 57) and I get these warnings....I would kill myself if my HD wears out/dies b/c of heat...it is not like I am overclocking or anything....
any tips? -
I'm using Rightmark CPU clock utility to undervolt.
Right now my HD is at 43c which is pretty normal. I've never seen it get above
50c.
My house is pretty well air conditioned this time of year so that may help. Other than keeping the ambient temperature in your house cool I'm not sure if there's anything else you can do. I wouldnt worry too much though, I doubt this is enough heat to outright kill a component. Maybe your hard drive will last 5 years now instead of 6 but at that point I doubt you'll really care. -
Yea, our house is about 78 degrees Fahrenheit, so it isn't too hot.
Hopefully as I tweak the voltages it will go lower...
BTW, it is a Fujitsu 80gb 5400rpm. -
Has anyone noticed whether certain hard drive brands tend to be warmer than others? Because I also have a Z63a with a 60GB seagate hard drive, and I don't think I've ever seen the hard drive temps get above 50.
-
Yea, this could be the case, which would suck.
After I write my review of the laptop, I am going to try and create some sort of database where we can look at what configs yield what heat. -

A change in ambient temp will surely make a difference. Also what type of surface you rest it on. If you rest it on your lap or a couch the bottom wilol get hotter and so will the internals. On a side note the temp nodes in laptops are not a perfect science. You can have 2 identical z63's doing the same thing and show different temps. Go figure?/
It's here!! Posting from my Z63A
