Does anyone know whether the G1S now has an expresscard slot instead of pcmcia? I know someone has already asked this question but I just read through the whole post and it doesn't seem confirmed either way. I am assuming it doesn't have expresscard but hoping it does. Can't find this spec anywhere. If it does I will probably preoder.

    Thanks

No idea on it yet, it has not been listed as either. However, I will assume it will be ExpressSlot 54, since it would be stupid not to :p

Just a question, since it appears the DVI port is being replaced by HDMI. Is there any disadvantage to using an HDMI to DVI converter to hook up an external monitor via DVI?

So far I have seen all of the worries laid to rest, aside from the dedicated video memory. I was wondering, if you were to upgrade the memory to 4GB or even 3, is it possible to give the card more priority on system memory during shared tasks so that it could use excess for any improvement in performance?

Last, GenTech has this price up, whould MPC match that? It is only 70 bucks cheaper (enough to make the HDD upgrade free for those already willing to pay the 1999)

Good question. I know the 8400M GT in the Sony FZ uses dedicated + shared memory to bring it from 256MB to 380 something or even 800 someting if you have 1GB or 2GB of ram, respectively.

I would still prefer 512 of dedicated VRAM though.

As a well known fact, bigger does not necessarily mean better ;)

Right, the shared ram is going to be slower than dedicated, but it's not going to slow down the dedicated VRAM, and that slower shared ram might let you enable some feature or raise some setting you would otherwise not be able to do. I personally am totally against shared ram for GPU's, but if it helps a bit with the laptop I end up with, I will take it.

Unknown. There are a couple for sale (pre-order), but it could be a while longer.

I wanted to buy the Asus G1S notebook . As far as i know the OS is placed in a seperate partition in the Hard disk and not with a seperate OS disc .
    Is this true? .

I wanted to upgrade the hard disk by placing Seagate Momentus 7200.2 160GB hard disk instead of the existing 5400rpm hard disk . If i upgrade then the Original OS would be of no use if it is in a separate partition in the hard disk .

People who bought this laptop pls help

Asus provides what is called a "recovery DVD". You can boot to the DVD with whatever hard drive you want. There are 3 options for how you want your disk partitioned. 2 include having an OS partition and a data partition. The 3rd option is one big OS partition, which is what I opted for. Keep in mind that any data you had on your laptop when you re-partition will be lost. But you CAN do this on a new hard drive. However, if you haven't bought the laptop yet, a lot of retailers will ship the laptop with a newer/nicer hard drive installed, why not do that?

Never had a G1 but the G1S is at the same price the G1 was at 2 months ago, and now you get a faster/better video card, santa rosa technology, faster processor, esata, hdmi, etc.
