Yes I'm really hoping this is the case with the UX31A's, in which the 256GB model will have an A-Data. Heard nothing but bad reviews about the Sandisk SSD.![]()
It might however be a lottery-draw just like the UX31E models, where some were getting Adatas and some were getting Sandisks

Just wonder if ,
the UX32VD is expandable with more than 4gb of memory ?, i just read it,s not possible ? is this true ? ( and aftermarked SSD drive )

I've been going back and forth between the UX32VD i7 model (I actually ordered one on amazon a few days ago) or the new 2012 Sony S13 premium model on the sony student deal.
I've read a about a few people here who decided to go that route, I'd love to hear some opinions. I've been posting in the Sony forums and I thought I'd hear from this side of the fence. Here is my pros/cons list
Any input would be helpful

Hi Guys, any word on the UK launch of the UX32VD?
No sign on Amazon yet? A couple of other places seem to be listing it, but no actual stock.
I'm planning to swap to this SSD/add 8 Gb Ram: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-256...OLE&s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1340206964&sr=1-1
Will it just be a case of doing this and then doing a clean install of Windows?
The talk of the 32 Gb soldered cache drive above makes my think it could cause problems/make it more complicated.
Thanks -
It was a lottery draw even with the original UX31..If you went into any retailer the display model always had a-data drives and if you bought one and brought it home it almost always had sandisk. I bought and returned three of them at best buy for that exact reason. The a-data ssd scored 7.9 and the sandisk scored lower than the 7200rpm hdd in my desktop..consistently.
-
Yeah so that's why I'm hoping it's not a randomised luck thing. All signs are pointing towards the A-Data model with the very few people have have posted about it...But we shall see within the next week with more and more people getting it
-
Well, I have a 31a-db51 coming tomorrow or Thursday..(so Amazon says) and if it it has backlight bleed or a sandisk ssd it will be going back too.
-
Well make sure to let us all know tomorrow if all goes well with delivery...As a lot of us UX31A consumers are awaiting for concrete information..
-
I ordered it yesterday and they said 8 or 9 days..last night they sent an email and said "Good news..we will be able to deliver it on the 21st or 22nd" (I paid for 1 day)..I have yet to hear that it shipped though.
-
woah thats abit more than its over here xD, how is it locked in place , by screws id asume , dont ask me i had to send mine back in before i got to replace the ssd with the hdd , due to the backlight shining out of the lower
frame -.- no backlight bleed thou , but still im gona keep on sending it back till they get it right and if they gotta send me 4 more , thou this is my first , still for the price thats not to be even considered acceptable , hence why i sent it back for a replacement that they sure as hell better get right
p.s: it still is the most epic ultrabook eva!!!

The cache drive won't make a problem. In case of a clean install, it will have no role. You can also just clone the factory HDD to your new SSD and then you keep everything (recovery partitions, etc). Then just uninstall ExpressCache, the software from "Programs & Features". Least risky solution.
The only thing I don't know is which Cloning software is best for GPT disks... As your HDD is usu. bigger than the SSD, you need to srhink some partitions, but keep the alignment, etc. -
Possibly a dumb question, but...
Are there any places around (that will be selling the Prime in the US) that don't have a restocking fee? Seems like many of you are saying you'll return it if it has a Sandisk SSD or a flexy keyboard, but given that these aren't really defects, are you just going to eat the restocking fee (in the case of Amazon, 15%)?
I bought a DB51 on Amazon and am a little worried about opening it up given the fee, especially if there will be an Xbox/other promotion by another vendor in the next week or two... -
Amazon just adjusted the ship date for my UX32VD, should be going out tomorrow, delivery on friday.
-
Lucky you, Amazon Canada still shows my ship date as July 3rd-13th.
-
Could someone verify that I'm not insane:
Why are Amazon.com and NewEgg.com specs different on the exact same model?
Newegg.com - ASUS UX32VD-DB71 Notebook Intel Core i7 3517U(1.90GHz) 13.3" 4GB Memory DDR3 1333 500GB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GT 620M
Amazon.com: ASUS Zenbook UX32VD-DB71 13.3-Inch Ultrabook: Computers & Accessories -
The only incorrect spec for both of them is that the CPU is 1.7GHz, not 1.9GHz as newegg states
-
Best buy, Amazon, Staples, I'm sure others too..none charge restocking fees. BTW, who told you amazon charges a restocking fee or did you not buy it from amazon themselves but an agent seller of theirs? They don't charge on laptops (within 30 days).
-
Hrm Asus.com only shows 1.7GHz being offered for the i5 model:
http://zenbook.asus.com/zenbook/?c=prime_ux32
Where are you getting your info? -
Which one of these has a replaceable SSD drive?
The UX32VD has a soldered cache SSD but what about the UX31A ? Is it mSATA or is also soldered on the mainboard ?
Also is the UX32VD cache SSD user accessible? Can we install Windows directly on it? -
UX31A-DB51 back in stock at Amazon.
-
I have returned countless stuff to Amazon and have never been charged a restocking fee not sure about laptops.
-
You won't be charged a restocking fee if it's "their fault". This includes defects in the product. Say, the screen has excessive backlight bleed. They'll pay for shipping back and refund you in full. Though, if you do this too much for high-price items, you'll be blacklisted from Amazon.
-
I've returned laptops to Amazon no restock or ship fee. You just need to give somewhat of a good reason.
-
This lists the only items you will be charged a restocking fee for and computers is not one of them IF you buy it directly from Amazon. If you buy it from someone else selling on their site then you are subject to their rules.
Amazon.com Help -
Ah crap. I just received my UX31a-DB71 from Amazon but guess what? The power cord is UK spec., NOT US. Amazon?! Why are you doing this to me? Arrrgh.
-
My shipping date for the UX32VD was adjusted to this as well. I just hope that they actually ship out tomorrow. I can't wait to get my hands on this thing.
-
A sub on buy.com has the 31a-db51 for $1049 incl shipping ATM. However, they don't take laptop returns period.
-
Amazon CS told me so. I bought directly from Amazon.
I was told if unopened, then full refund. If opened within 30 days, then 15% restocking fee. I believe this is a recent development...and it may be applied inconsistently. Seems like Amazon wants the right to charge a restocking fee. It only makes sense - what are they going to do with used laptops?
From the return policy on the DB51 page:
Specifically limited to new computers in unopened boxes...
Of course, if it's defective, then full return. But I'm talking about non-defective things, ie I don't like it as much as I thought I would, has a Sandisk SSD, etc. -
What everybody else does with them, send them back to the manufacturer to get repackaged. That is in direct contradiction to their official return policy by the way.
Here is the DB51 page, where is that which you quoted or is it not the AMAZON USA page? I am sure the rules differ from country to country.
Amazon.com: ASUS Zenbook Prime UX31A-DB51 13.3-Inch Ultrabook: Computers & Accessories -
Well, for my sake, I hope you're right!
It shows up when you click "see more technical details."
The reason why I ask is that it seems like most online retailers DO charge a restocking fee (Newegg, Fry's), so I was surprised to hear Amazon did not. -
Yes I ordered it on Digitec. And it better be FULLHD
I've never seen digitec screwing up on specs.
I'll play with it for a while and I'll update the memory to 10GB and put a Samsung 830 256GB in a month or two
-
This would actually be useful for me as I'm likely moving back to the UK... Noted.
(Sorry for your loss..) -
Buy.com gives 45 days without a restocking fee, as does Best-Buy but I see what you were talking about now..that is enough for me to cancel my order which was due to ship today or tomorrow. I will wait until somebody else has it in stock.
-
Ha, someone is selling the UX31A-DB71 on Amazon for nearly twice the price, just listed:
Amazon.com: ASUS Zenbook Prime UX31A-DB71 13.3-Inch Ultrabook: Computers & Accessories -
I returned a Samsung Series 7 Slate and got a full refund yesterday. The policy I read on the returns page was the same: 15% restocking fee, period.
However, my experience with Amazon is that if you put the product back exactly how it was, you'll get a full refund without even having to ask.
Even if that doesn't work, if you whine enough, they'll usually do what they need to make you happy. Given the choice between making a few hundred bucks in restocking fees and protecting their reputation, Amazon often chooses the good word-of-mouth. -
I just called them after cancelling my order, they put me on hold for 10 minutes and then came back and said they apparently don't have any policy that anyone can depend on. They documented the fact that their return page contradicts the item page and say they will address it at some point. As for now you can get charged anywhere from 15-80% depending on how the guy in returns feels that day (they said this, not me).
-
Major backlight bleed on the lower right edge at 3:02 :/
-
Haha unbelievable. Caveat emptor...
-
Yep -- I had same problem and called them about it -- there is apparently no way to get the US plug adapter to slip into the adapter in place of the UK, but they did give me a small credit card refund so I can buy the US adapter (although at $99 pretty steep -- the less expensive $28 travel adapter looks better).
-
I ran to Office Depot to purchase an International adapter just to get the notebook up and running to make sure everything else was on the up and up. If you don't want to spend $99, check this link out.
http://us.estore.asus.com/index.php?pg=2&l=product_list&c=54 -
I think the prime's have a slightly thicker ac adapter plug. people were complaining on how fragile the original connectors were
-
rewatch it, the "bleed" begins when the computer is completely off. when he slightly moves the laptop, the "bleed" also moves. probably just a reflection
-
Gotcha. That's too bad. I guess I'll just stick with the adapter until the e-store gets a few extra units in stock.
-
The backlight LEDs are visible in a pattern along the bottom as per the previous bleed video.
This is an absolute deal breaker for me, can't stand backlight bleed, especially when it's as uneven as this -
For you guys that are replacing the UX32VD hard drive with a SSD, are you also removing the stock SSD that comes with it?
If not, are there any benefits to keeping it? Such as using it for cache or page file? -
yeah, im talking about the the bleed coming from the bottom edge, I agree that massive side thing is just a reflection.
I'm more than slightly concerned that its visible even under sunny conditions. -
Can somene recap the bleed issue, is that on all models, folks who have their units are you seeing that?
