For those who have installed W7 entirely on the Sandisk SSD with the HDD as storage (such as dunces), do you feel completely satisfied with this setup? I don't use huge programs and would likely mainly install MS Office 2010 and photoshop CS5. I did purchase the 256GB Crucial M4, but I'm having second thoughts about using it if things are running well on a mere 32GB SSD and can return it to Amazon as I haven't opened it yet. I also wanted to ask if you could easily return to a stock configuration if for some reason you needed to return the laptop.

If you want more options, here is a list of all the 8GB sticks that match the specs of the UX32DV
Newegg.com - Computer Hardware, Memory, Laptop Memory, 8GB, DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) -
You are going to quickly run out of room after windows is installed. Installing and running other programs on the spinning HDD wont be as snappy as just installing it on the SSD you bought. Also, as you use the computer and install more programs you wont have to worry about where the default install folder is located. Seems like most programs out there have a little bit different install location ( either documents and settings, or root, or the programs folder) so if you have just one big drive with the OS included, you can save yourself the trouble of micromanaging where your free space is going.
To those who are getting a new drive, keep in mind I haven't done it yet but have done some research about this one in particular, Newegg.com - Corsair Force Series 3 CSSD-F240GB3A-NB 2.5" 240GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) Notebook Upgrade Kit
this corsair 7mm drive comes with a nifty transfer kit, so it seems like I should be able to clone my existing windows 7 instillation from the 500gb HDD and clone it to this corsair??? Saves me the trouble of "purchasing" windows 7. Thoughts about cloning? -

I just ordered this RAM for my UX32VD. Would do you guys think?

Usually when the stickers are new, they come off easily without any trace. If not, use the stickers themselves as "magnets" for residue, you can use them to pick up any glue left, carefully.
I always remove all stickers right away, they are for the shop display, not for usage. And later they leave a mark, as the plastic might have aged differently around them. If the Zenbook's top is metal, this is less a danger. -
Anyway, cheers to all the guys, girls, and red pandas in this thread. A lot of good stuff! -

As far as ULV processors goes, the way I understand hyper threading is that HT only works sometimes. if the temps gets to hot it will do funky stuff by itself and you will be denied turbo boosting.
so if I am playing a game that requires dual core at 2,5 ghz to run effectively, - then if this machine gets to hot will it then downclock itself? (throttling) ?
thats a risky thing because the ULV i7 can run two cores at 2,8. that's actually quite a lot if you think about it. but will it then rarely allow that if the machine gets extremely hot? -
Anyhoo, back to awesome laptops! -
I received my ux31a from Amazon this afternoon. If you are picky about backlight bleed, you may want to skip this laptop. I have seen two samples, and the backlight bleed is very noticeable along the bottom edge of the screen (when viewing dark content). Regardless, I still believe that the screen is superior to the screens found in the x220 (IPS - which has backlight bleed too), the Samsung NP900X3C (brightness/contrast seemed lacking and the screen looked "fuzzy" to me because of the antiglare coating) and the 13" Macbook air. Still trying to determine whether or not I am going to try for an exchange.

check this out: AnandTech - Mobile Ivy Bridge HD 4000 Investigation: Real-Time iGPU Clocks on ULV vs. Quad-Core (scroll down for the cpu graphs)
Anyway, I wouldn't worry too much as the gpu is far more likely to be the bottleneck anyway than the cpu. -

Oh no! For others reading this and choosing a new crucial SSD, get the CT256M4SSD 1
PCDO. idk, but can you salvage your purchase and take off some brackets or plating?? some one in a previous post was saying they did it that way. Might have been for another drive though. -
-
If you're worried about the SSD being larger than 7mm, that shouldn't be a problem. Just take off the out shell of the SSD and you can still install the PCB only and it'll fit. Getting one that is specifically 7mm will greatly limit your choices.
-
Yeah, you're right, it's the Vaio Z I was thinking of.
As for the other stuff - you're spot on. I just personally don't like paying for anything which is inferior in performance for a set price - I don't value battery life, size, and portability very much, I guess.
But to be honest, I am still split. This or a Clevo P150EM.
Does the UX32VD have a 7200RPM HDD? I read the past few pages but it seems there's no definitive answer. Amazon reports it as 7200RPM (which someone mentions on here as potentially wrong). -
I just upgraded my UX32VD to 10GB of RAM. In case anyone is thinking of doing the same, it's a piece of cake. I used a 8GB Patriot PSD38G16002S. This is a double sided SODIMM. The original 2GB module is double sided, so there's room.
Use a Torx #5 for the case screws. -

Amazons's SquareTrade 3-Year Computer Accidental Protection Warranty ($1250-1500)
Should I get this?
I am also getting and replacing the HDD with a SSD and upgrading the ram in the ux32vd. Will this void any warranties? -
Hi everyone, just signed up so that I could thank you all for the great input these past hundred pages! I've been lurking and I'm now typing this from the UX31A, which I got today from Amazon
I also wanted to add that I got ADATA as well, and I'm not seeing backlight bleeding on the screen *shrug* Maybe I haven't tested it out enough in all types of conditions, but I haven't noticed it at all. I also haven't had any problems with the fans, it's really quiet most of the time. The touchpad is bugging me a bit with it being so sensitive, but I might just use a mouse so that's okay for now.
The only thing that's being buggy is that flash and video don't seem to work properly on Google Chrome...?? I get these weird bright flashes of colors going on randomly instead of the actual video on youtube. I hear the sound fine but the video is all weird. It works totally fine on IE and Firefox though.. Does anyone know what could be causing the problem on just Chrome? -
-
Ah, well this pretty much decides it for me. I have a 5400RPM HDD in my crappy Dell Vostro 1500, and I cannot stand how slow it is.
Paying too much more for a HDD/SSD upgrade to swap it out isn't worth it for me, and the models with SSDs don't have upgradable RAM.
Going Clevo this time, it looks. -
ye all these problems are concerning. I'm a student and need something reliable. Looks like i'm going to refuse this ncix delivery
-
Now that people actually have these machines, can we clarify the ports -- some reviews say it has displayport some says it doesn't. What is that weird mini VGA port?
-
I'm happy with it minus the touchpad which is driving me insane. I keep zooming in and out on accidentI have no issues w/ the keypad or the sharp edge digging into my wrists/arms.. but maybe that depends on each person and how big their hands are..?
and poop, why did they lower the price right after I received mine? hmmph! -
I hate when people describe on online and overly exagerrate...sounds like a "jet"??? sigh
I guess I'll have to wait until tuesday when my UX32VD arrives and I can play and compare it with my S13A. And decide which to keep. -
I'm a bit surprised that the VD is proving more popular than the UX31A-DB71 - anyone else?
Maybe it's just cause I'm running Ubuntu which won't deal well with graphics switching... -
Aside from the slight case modifications, we also find a refreshed selection of interfaces on the new Asus Zenbook UX32VD. Asus integrated 3 USB 3.0 ports, an SD card reader, a full size HDMI connector, and a mini-VGA port into the UX32VD. Included are matching adapters a mini-VGA to standard VGA adapter and a USB-to-RJ45 LAN adapter."
New finding:
"According to Asus, it will be possible for users to swap RAM modules and hard drives themselves without loss of warranty."

Simple question...
Where can we see what graphic card is used ?
And how to switch easly ?
I had an Alienware M11X and it was really easy... just an tray icon, right click and choose between the two.. but can't find anything on asus ux32vd -
Has anyone tried playing Grand Theft Auto 4 no this notebook? If yes, what video settings worked for you to get smooth gameplay?

I think if games like diablo3 or league of legends run others shouldn't be a problem because mmo games usually uses more ressources even with low settings than offline games...

If you ask me I don't think it's worth it to have such an expensive SSD in it when the integrated one can be used for the Windows 7 install. Only if the money doesn't matter much. What you'll see with a proper full size SSD is way faster 4k performance, but I regard the i100 as very sufficient. The main thing about SSDs are the low search time (like 0.1ms) compared to mechanical HDDs 16-20ms or so. And that low ms search time you'll get with the integrated Sandisk i100 SSD. Of course you'll also be able to use a store bought SSD for size-consuming apps like games and big production suites, and if the faster loadtimes in those are worth paying for it's up to you.
If you're after a snappy Windows 7 environment which I guess most of us are, then I think anyone would be satisfied with the built in Sandisk i100 SSD. I did a qucik real world test by virus scanning the system32 and syswow64 folders on this one, and on my stationary computer which has an OCZ Gen3 SandForce 500/500 SSD. This one appears to be about 50-60% of the speed of the OCZ one in numbers of objects scanned per minute. A very respectable result.
I've installed Adobe Creative Suite CS6 on the mechanical HDD, with Premiere CS6, Photoshop CS6 etc. It works very well, even premiere loads in just a few seconds.
You're not going to run out of space easily if you just follow a few simple steps. As stated earlier I had only used 15GB of the 30GB when everything was ready (including firefox, vlc, skype etc.). This was using an unmodified Windows 7 Ultimate x64 install. What you need to do is; 1. disabling the hibernation file, which will return 2-4GB of space. 2. lower the page file to 1024MB or so, which will return another 3GB or so. 3. (optional) disable the system restore and uninstall "tablet pc" files from Windows Components, which will return around 500mb-1GB more.
This only takes a few minutes to do, and it's hardly any micromanaging involved. I ran my stationary computer on a 30GB SSD for a couple years when they were new. It was no problems whatsoever.
Even after installing word processing and some other heavier programs on the SSD I still have over 12GB left.
Since people are mainly going to use the computer for simple tasks like word processing, surfing and word processing - everything will work very snappy directly from the SSD while the other HDD sleeps. And when heavier programs are launched from the mechanical HDD it's still fast, but will just a couple of seconds to spin up and load. The HDD is very silent when it's not trashing around (like it is with the preinstalled bloatware mess). -

Ok, I do not care about i7 or i5 if there is no overloading hotting issues with i7.
I need mandatory:
-Matte FHD IPS display.
-backlight keyboards
-SSD [do not need HDD or Hybrid]
So I know UX31A [WITH INDEX " A" ONLY] has Matte FHD display for sure.
1. What is that ASDATA and SandDisk differeneces [mentioned above in quotes]?
2. What is that SSD + "TPM"? What is "TPM"? What if I'll take i7 with 126SSD without this TPM, ah? [accordingly to chart picture]
3. So what is this model "Asus Zenbook Prime UX31A- AB71" [see l1nk to Amazon]? Any idea? What is differences to U31A- DB72 [prime model $1.599]? Only SSD lower capacity [ 126 vs 256Gb]? Or something else?
ASUS Zenbook Prime UX31A-AB71 I mean this model has i7, SSD126 but why index AB71 differs from Asus UX31A-DB72? Logicallly it must have code -DB71 instead of AB71....
My problem:
1. I'll take from Amazon USA and there is no chance for me to return. My fellow is going back to Europe on 3d July from USA and I could not make any return. So I need to be 100% sure what I buy.
2. $1599 too much for me. I will use only like office machine. No games. But want high speed processor for future since new versions of the current programs always demand new processor speeds. SSD capacity is no problem. So I consider SSD 126Gb with i7. But there is lack of that TPM in model coded AB71. So thats why I am stuck!
Thanks! -
Also no noticeable backlight bleed to speak of, but maybe I'm not looking hard enough, lol. Will report more on that later I if I see anything.

Hey everyone,
After following this thread since page 28 on a daily basis I decided to give my input as well. In the last 6 months I´ve had 3 laptops, the HP folio (returned it because it was too noisy), the samsung series 5 (returned it because of a physical flaw on the touchpad) and now I am using my friends macbook pro until I get my UX32VD. I use the computer to play Diablo 3, watch movies and the regular browsing/skying/office stuff. I travel a lot so I need something portable and since everyone in my family seems to be running macbook pros and try to sell me one whenever I complain of a lack of equal match when it comes to pc´s I also want something that can beat it in every possible way – I believe the ux32vd can do the job.
I am debatting whether I should get an 256gb SSD right away (the 8gb ram upgrade is a must). I like the idea of having a lot of space but I can live with less if on the other hand all my programs, pictures, movies, games etc load and run as fast as possible. I´d prefer to install a fresh copy of win7 on the new SSD and just have that one drive for everything. In my experience 30 gb just won´t be enough for win7 in the long run and I don´t want to have to worry about diskspace. The problem is I don’t know exactly how to proceed when I have the new SSD so I am hoping someone could guide me on how to do it step by step. If not then I will probably wait with the SSD and go with dunces and jedighosts solution 30gb ssd/400GB HDD and get the SSD later. (btw thanks a lot for your contribution so far, it has been very helpful, much appreciated!)
On a sidenote, I haven´t seen anyone post this but I found this link via a video on youtube while searching for the ux32vd and it´s a guide on how to open the computer and replacing RAM and HDD. It´s in german but you can get a rough translation with google chrome. techfunbln.blogspot.de
Greetings from Denmark (I ordered my VD from komplett.dk - should ship on the 27th, the countdown is on! I´ve been waiting for this beauty since it was announced at CES)

Edit: here is the link to the youtube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owI59evwKhk
It has the link to the techfun site at the end of it.

ETA- post supposed to be under Jirel
I think im getting a little more used to it but still wish i could just disable the zooming multitouch function!oh and fixed the Chrome/flash problem.. it was just chrome having a bad day i guess!

Ux32vd trackpad, anyone notice the right top corner is very stiff, hard to click. However the left top corner is very easy. The pad is flush to the case on the right top corner, but slightly below on the left. Am I ocd..is this normal?

I agree that the quickest and easiest way to convert the SSD from GPT to MBR in the Disk Management tool. Like you say, I don't either see any reason why it wouldn't work and it would get rid of the added step of Parted Magic which would be nice. Anyhow, people will be able to see if it works before installing Windows 7 since if it's not listed with a 'warning sign' in the install process Disk Management it's good to go. People can also see if it's listed as a bootable disk in the BIOS - that's the quickest way of doing it.
It's also a good point that it's safest to keep the original Windows 7 install as long as possible, but if it messes with the boot process it might still be worth to format the original C: during the Windows 7 install process after having confirmed that it will accept the integrated Sandisk i100 SSD as a target disk. Regarding the drivers, I could also arrange a list of what do download from Asus homepage since people would get the newest drivers (a big bonus by doing it like this I think) and can get only what they need, so it's no unnecessary processes in the background.
The fan operating should be able to get to work exactly as it were in the stock Windows 7 install, so you're right that I'm probably missing some important drivers. I only thought that it should be operated by the BIOS, but it's more likely that it is a conjunction between both the BIOS and the operating systems drivers.
I only have the Power4Gear driver as of yet, and will install the rest and report back. The laptop have been acting very silent, but sometimes when it's under load it will control the fans a bit clumsily, even spinning them pretty fast when the processor already is really cool. Anyhow I'll do the driver installs now
You're right, the HDD light is working for the SSD as well. It was probably because things were loaded into the RAM that I didn't see any activity of the led. I will update the other post.
I already tested the ASUS live update, but then it only reported a firmware update (to the 206 bios). I've now updated the bios, so it perhaps list the rest of the drivers now.
The guide is coming soon, latest by sunday. Hang on all
PS. Here is a 3dMark11 run with it on a clean Windows 7 install on the integrated SSD. Those reports about the 620M being unnecessary as it only give around 500 points like the Intel HD4000 are just bogus. NoricHardware got 1025 points on the preinstalled Windows 7 using the mechanical HDD, so it's a nice 10% boost!
