for the people that has serious light bleed ..
i sent mine to asus repair center and they said they will exchange my screen for a new one shipping from taiwan (2 weeks) the only reason the accepted it, it was because mine had serious bleed they said there is a range since all the ips panels have bleed , thats what they said but since mine was out of the acceptable parameters they gona exchange it but they cant guarantee it will be a 100% light bleed free panel

They must mean all the IPS panels Asus is using have bleed, as obviously not all IPS panels have bleed.

Wow! Some nice posts in here - very useful!
I'm interested in the UX32VD (probably with both the ram and SSD upgrade). Right now I'm using the Asus u36jc-1a but with a busted screen. Can anyone tell me how they are compared to each other? Specs seems very alike in many ways except the screens, but how is the build quality i wonder? The u36jc seems very sturdy, but a bit hot. I wonder if anyone have tried both the machines. Thx

For those who always touch the touchpad while typing and unable to use Asus Smart Detector function, now I found the solution..

The problem is that this function doesn't work in the latest version of the ELAN touchpad driver - V10.5.9.0, which come with UX32VD model. You can fix it by ..
    - Remove it first from Control Panel -> Program and Features.
    - Then, download the previous version from Asus website, and re-install it.

I use Version V10.5.5.0 of UX21E model. It works well, and fix my problem.. ^^

Ohhh I'll try this out when I get my UX32VD, but does reverting to older drivers have any negative side-effects? Were some features broken that were fixed in 10.5.9.0 or anything like that?

I think U36JC has the first generation, standard (non-low voltage) Intel Core i5-460M processor. It also had an old and pretty weak graphic card Nvidia GeForce 310M. Memory likely capped at 1066 MHz. I don't think their specs are that alike, actually.

Uninstalling Intel Dynamic Platform/ Thermal Framework on my ux31a has removed the problem with improper fan control after the laptop has been sleeping.

Yes. You will loose the ability of changing tdp in Windows.
What you should do instead, is to remove the Intel(R) Dynamic Platform & Thermal Framework Fan Participant Driver. You can find this under "System devices" in your device manager. Remember to tick "Delete the driver software for this device." upon uninstalling. I have not extensively tested this, but so far this lets the fan control work properly and you are still able to change the tdp in Windows.

Has anyone tried using the built-in SSD in the UX32VD simply as a dedicated Windows 7 Hibernate data drive? This would help free up some disk space on our main hard drive yes?

Not many people hibernate at all anymore. With the batteries used today sleep is more than enough. I usually just turn hibernate off to free up the disk space.

Curious, is there a list of bloatware to kill off a ux31a anywhere? Ive Installed one app (1.25gb) and only got 66gb left on a 104gb volume... there has to be some bloat on here.

Btw: I'm setting up the unit I have like I would use it to test out space, etc. while I wait for an exchange unit to come in for the light bleeding.

Not possible: hibernate - How to change location of hibernation file in Windows 7? - Super User

Hibernate must be on the root drive because it is a boot file, Windows is not currently able to boot of the non-root drive.

I used to use hibernate a lot myself, but with the standby options now I just don't bother anymore.

My web browsers all keep their place when I close and re-open them, so unless I have a lot of applications opened where I haven't saved their work (unlikely) I don't bother to hibernate, just sleep mode or close the app.

Sorry if I wasn't being precise before. What I mean was it specs compared to their respective release dates. Both were the fastest laptops compared to their size and price range. Just wondering about the build quality is similar good, especially compared to the extra 50% in cost (at least in Denmark). I agree, that it really wouldn't make sense to compare them directly today. (Im looking for an upgrade to my old laptop). Are you saying that I should expect lower temperatures and higher cpu/gfx speeds, or just higher speeds and similar temperatures? Thx

This actually works! Awsome! Thanks for testing this! I now deem this laptop fully functional :p (ux32vd)

I haven't tried this on my primary OS but it works like a charm on my win 8 install.

To those wondering about other differences: As far as I could see, two finger scrolling had to be customized through the registry, as the settings for it did not appear in the control panel.

Other than that I didn't see any differences, perhaps a slight difference in cursor sensitivity and acceleration, but that could just as well be settings I have not yet adjusted.

Note that I had previosly changed a lot of settings in the registry that seemed to remain after the install, so there could be larger differences that I can not see.

    Thanks again!

Who here has reformatted their ux31a? Have you guys noticed that downloading the zipped graphic drivers on the intel site always result in a "this computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing this software" error? Also, how are you guys dealing with palm check?

I was desperate to find this out too, before these zenbook prime were even released. I asked several times, but no one knew the answer at the time. Now, it's confirmed that the UX31A has soldered memory and non-standard SSD, so neither of these will be upgradable. If you want the ability to upgrade, you'll have to go with a UX32VD variant, as that one can take standard 2.5" SSD and has one slot to upgrade memory. A copy/paste of my post from a month ago:

It looks like SSD uses a non-standard format, and memory is soldered on since the UX31/21 models are slightly thinner than the UX32A and UX32VD.

I went back by microcenter today to see if they had any more ux31a models in so I could swap out my backlight bleed unit and see if i can get a better one.

They didn't have any but I looked at every ultrabook they had... checking the screens on the ux21e, ux31e, lenovo 310/410, toshiba z835, hp folio 13, envy 14z, the new sony, samung series 5 and series 9 (last gen, not the new one) and guess what... none of them have a hit of light bleed... its just these blasted new ux31a models that have the problem. I pretty much expected that but wanted to rule out anyone being able to say, its normal to have bleed like that. lol.

Hopefully i'll get it exchanged before my return period is up, otherwise its going back. will be a shame as otherwise its an excellent machine.

Has anyone found a compatible power adaptor for the UX32VD? The official OEM brick is expensive or out of stock every where I go.

It turns out my iGo Green doesn't have a compatible tip, and neither does my XPal battery pack...

I always like to have a second power supply just in case...Failing that, does anyone at least know which tip numbers to order from Xpal and iGo?

For anyone interested in BestBuy's version of the UX31A-DB71 they are no longer showing it as backordered. Now it is just sold out. They must have gotten a few and sold them instantly..at $1299 I can see why.

I can concur that it is just showing me Sold Out now instead of Backordered. Having just received my UX31A-R5102F last night, I'm quite happy. I highly doubt I will be attempting an exchange. This machine isn't meant to do video encoding or gaming so the CPU wasn't needed but the 256GB SSD would have been nice.

I do have some backlight bleed, but nothing I am upset about.

I can confirm though, that my model (Best Buy version) does net a 7.9 on the WEI for its harddrive. Haven't been able to test with real programs, but I believe this means it is an ADATA drive, opposed to the slower Samsung.

Quick question for you guys. I have been following this thread for awhile now. I ended up getting a ux31a-db51 a few weeks ago and was wondering how I would go about making sure I have the ADATA drive as opposed to SanDisk.

Also for those of you with your palm touching the trackpad... Per a previous post the TouchFreeze program really helped.

Also does someone have a list of the bloatware that can be removed without harming the computer?

I believe they both have 1.9..that 1.7 stuff started somewhere and a lot of sites just clipped the stats and patched them into their own.

BestBuy has added a third to their site now but it makes no sense. i5 with 256SSD for the same price (1299) as the i7 with 256SSD is and both have Home Premium. I would prefer the i5 with 256 but it needs to be cheaper.

Based on the WEI, it looks like it did, scored a 7.9 and from everything I've read, the Sandisk scores an upper 5. I'm not at home now and can't use more traditional methods. I won't be taking it apart just to look for the sticker and possibly void a warranty.

I agree, very odd price choice, I would have expected it to come it at 1199 or so, maybe 1149 even. I'm guessing something is in error and will be fixed or updated soon. Either the price or the specs.

I am actually not sure this entirely answers my question. I really don't mind the RAM being only 4GB as I think 8GB is really kind of overkill unless you are doing some higher end work, so the RAM being soldered on isn't a deal breaker, and even if the SSD is nonstandard, you'll probably still be able to get a hold of the part and replace it yourself, as long as the SSD isn't soldered. I haven't been able to find this information and it's the main decision behind me getting the Best Buy extended warranty or not.

At least for me, it isn't a "preference," it is just that there isn't a huge difference between these two particular CPU's. There are larger differences between other i5's and i7's but not these two. I'd take a larger SSD over an i7 if forced to be one or the other in this particular situation. So if I go up a model, my decision is because of the SSD, not the CPU. People tend to get awfully wrapped up in the "higher #" for no reason other than it is a higher number. Good marketing I suppose.

Some might say the i5 will use less power, and it does, but if the i7 finishes things slightly a few milliseconds faster, does it equal out? Wouldn't really know unless you ran exhaustive tests over several scenarios so I don't really place much weight on this.

You just need to be looking for UX31A, the word Prime isn't there. I ordered the $999 version and the word Prime *is* stamped all over the box so don't freak out that it isn't posted on the website.

Right now, the last one, the UX31A-R5202H, has a price that doesn't quite make sense. I am thinking that it was misposted and either the price or the specs will change prior to its "Backordered" status changing.
