Others have mentioned it and I notice that after a clean install when waking up from sleep mode the fan becomes loud (on and off) until you do a reboot. After a boot it goes back to being non-existent. Can't figure out if this is a driver, bios or power scheme issue.

Has anyone enumerated the difference between the UX31A and UX32VD model?
-
-
Just contacted Amazon about a screen flickering issue and crackling left speaker, they are going to extend my return window, let me hang on to the laptop until they get more in stock, and send me a new one when they get in stock. No fuss, they were very very easy to work with. Very glad I went through Amazon.

how long is he wait from amazon?
-
Just curious, how hot does your UX32VD run when you idle and play some games?
-
How do you update the BIOS? I can't see to do it with the Asus Live Update program.

it would also seem that jittles has some new stock https://www.jittles.com/ProcutDetail.php?pid=1490
any1 know if this shop is trustworthy and should buy the ux32vd from them? -

For those having issues with fn+F2 do this. Uninstall the ATK package, uninstall the wireless console 3 package and then re-install atk and then wc3 in that order. That will give you back the way it was from the factory but both packages have to be installed.

Just bought the Best Buy model. I looked at my C drive and noticed that under properties it says "SanDisk SSD U100 124GB"
Does this mean I have the bad hard drive? -
oh wait..you did get the right one didn't you. BB is still selling the UX31Es and have those on display. They come with the sandisk drive. I don't think you can buy the 31As yet without having them shipped to the store. -
I have the ux31a... ivy bridge, IPS and all... I will take it back the WEI for harddrive was 7.5... my other ux31a has a WEI of 7.9.
-
Heads up, Amazon is selling the UX31A-DB51 for $1080 and the UX31A-AB71 for $1350. You will get a free $100 Amazon Gift card with the purchase.

Anybody have any news for the UK? Day by day im getting slightly more annoyed, as ive been needing to replace my current laptop for a while.
I figured i would wait for this to release (at the time, it was meant to only be a few weeks, which has now turned into a good few months), but there is no sign what so ever, especially with the rumours that Asus may not even release the VD here.
Sure, i could order it online/from another country but with the high defect rate we are experiencing, with the amount of returns needed to be done, the best route would be to buy this from a store but given there is no sign, its indeed quite frustrating.
A few UK sites such as insight are listing 1/8/12 (1st August) release here, although, they say they're only expecting 1. Perfect.
Even the ux31a is unavailable. Anyone in the UK gotten their hands on one of these machines? if so, how?
If it wasn't for this thread, im not sure where i would've gained any info, so im very grateful for this!
Cheers,

update: I responded to their survey and said I didn't like the policy and they called me for a second time. They said they still couldn't give me the full 100 but they could give me 50..I took that and am happy with it too. -

On mine there was was a sticker on the black box that said 'sandforce' i hear there are 'sandisk' stickers on the other ones so you should be able to take it back and have them find you one with the better SSD.
How is your screen btw, any light bleed. -
Mine read as follows:
processor 6.9
memory 5.9
graphics 6.4
3d graphics 6.4
primary hard disk 7.9
I've had 3 ux31a i5 models. two of them (one with ddr3lm memory and one with ddr3 had these exact scores). The other one with ddr3lm and sandforce hd only got 5.9 on the graphics benches for some reason. -
so now I reran it and got 5.9 for aero and 6.4 for 3d. Maybe if I run it again I will get something different again. -

Is there any place I can get a free .edu address?
Like do I need to sign in and accept some kind of BB link?

Ugh I really want a 256gb he but this is killing me, especially with that $100 GC offer.

-
Ann screw it, 128GB it is, crossing me fingers now that it has no light bleed and the ADATA SSD
-
I just want to make triple sure before I place an order...the UX31A can be upgraded via single DIMM slot and mSATA connector for an SSD correct?
-
None of the UX31 models can be upgraded because of the unibody design AND proprietary SSD boards used within. -
Doh - got them mixed up - thanks for the clarification!

Hi all,
Sorry in advance for what turned out to be a lengthy post. I just got the Ux31a as a birthday gift and I'm still playing with it and getting it set up.
A couple of observations: I live in a house of mostly macs and this is truly the first PC laptop that seems to equal or better the total presentation you get with the Macbook Air.
I got the i5 model. I have to say that in terms of bang for the buck $999 this beats the air by a good bit.The screen is superb as is the keyboard whose backlight is more even than the 2 airs we have.
The trackpad still sucks but I have yet to see one that works as well the ones on macs under OSX
One question, I have gotten one with the sandisk SSD installed and I have read back a few pages and the gist seems to be that this is not the SSD to have.
However I'm a bit confused and wonder if the "tests" might not be totally accurate, specifically the Windows experience result. I'm getting numbers similar to what others posted here, BUT....... when I compare side by side with a toshiba unit that gets a 7.9 WEI, this machine is demonstrably real world faster.
My test is admittedly not real scientific, it consists of copying in file manager about 20GB of files of various sizes all the way from a few KB all the way up to just over 1GB in size.
The toshiba is somewhat comparably (or better) specced. It's a 2nd gen i7 with 6GB RAM and has (according to the device manager), samusung 830 SSD.
This unit is of course an ivy bridge unit but with the i5.
So this has me wondering if the samsung drive is not as fast as I thought it was (despite what the WEI says) or is there some other bottleneck/flaw in my test?
The other significant difference is that the ASUS has the factory windows load while the toshiba did have it's OS reloaded about a week ago.
Any ideas would be welcome, thanks
PS. even if this is the "slow disk" I think I'll still be happy since I'm in love with the machine otherwise -
Any thought on whether OC'ing the Geforce GT620M is doable in terms of thermals etc? Gaming isn't very important to me but if I can OC it a bit I might squeeze some extra FPS out of this computer.
And btw Gigabyte U2442N is looking as a very strong contender to this comp with full CPU and GT640M, sadly no info on distribution in the nordic countries. -
1. Bootup time
2. Launching applications which read a ton of data on startup like Photoshop and other Adobe stuff.
The minor difference in numbers from IOMeter or HDTach might not do justice for the real-world results you might end up seeing. -
