Others have mentioned it and I notice that after a clean install when waking up from sleep mode the fan becomes loud (on and off) until you do a reboot. After a boot it goes back to being non-existent. Can't figure out if this is a driver, bios or power scheme issue.

Looks like xoticpc.com might have it available now. All their UX31A models look still be on pre-order but the UX32VD looks to be available. Personally I'd still check with them before ordering to make sure though.

I agree, Amazon definitely has better return policy, the unfortunate thing is that it charges taxes in my state.

I haven't seen any solutions on this issue either. And now thanks to Newegg, I do not have a laptop.

There's a chart on page 72 or so. It has an error but helps with the general overview.

Just contacted Amazon about a screen flickering issue and crackling left speaker, they are going to extend my return window, let me hang on to the laptop until they get more in stock, and send me a new one when they get in stock. No fuss, they were very very easy to work with. Very glad I went through Amazon.

They have always been great. They cross ship if you want to exchange and after my second bad one I decided to return it and they even refunded my overnight shipping charges. I have since gotten a third from them and this one is great.

Ridiculously long. I placed my order on June 25. Still waiting... with no estimated delivery time yet. I am hoping this delay is on account of all the screen bleeding and people returning their laptops and that whatever new batch of UX32VDs they are getting are going to be error-free... But if I find another vendor doing that Xbox deal with the UX32VD I'll jump ship right now.

For those having issues with fn+F2 do this. Uninstall the ATK package, uninstall the wireless console 3 package and then re-install atk and then wc3 in that order. That will give you back the way it was from the factory but both packages have to be installed.

Just bought the Best Buy model. I looked at my C drive and noticed that under properties it says "SanDisk SSD U100 124GB"

Does this mean I have the bad hard drive?

it seems so. Somebody else bought it from bestbuy on monday and got the adata drive. go back to the store and see what the display has and tell them you want that. What score does that drive get in WEI? Also, does the box have a sticker on it saying "sandforce driven lsi"? If it does it should have the adata inside.

oh wait..you did get the right one didn't you. BB is still selling the UX31Es and have those on display. They come with the sandisk drive. I don't think you can buy the 31As yet without having them shipped to the store.

Anybody have any news for the UK? Day by day im getting slightly more annoyed, as ive been needing to replace my current laptop for a while.

I figured i would wait for this to release (at the time, it was meant to only be a few weeks, which has now turned into a good few months), but there is no sign what so ever, especially with the rumours that Asus may not even release the VD here.

Sure, i could order it online/from another country but with the high defect rate we are experiencing, with the amount of returns needed to be done, the best route would be to buy this from a store but given there is no sign, its indeed quite frustrating.

A few UK sites such as insight are listing 1/8/12 (1st August) release here, although, they say they're only expecting 1. Perfect.

Even the ux31a is unavailable. Anyone in the UK gotten their hands on one of these machines? if so, how?

If it wasn't for this thread, im not sure where i would've gained any info, so im very grateful for this!

    Cheers,

    Ash

That sucks..I got mine Friday..just called and they could give me back the $20 but not the gift card because it has to be applied at the same time. I could always return it and reorder it but I finally got a good one this time so I think I will just keep it.

update: I responded to their survey and said I didn't like the policy and they called me for a second time. They said they still couldn't give me the full 100 but they could give me 50..I took that and am happy with it too.

I got a best buy model thursday and it has the ADATA X11 drive so not all are one or the other it seems. The ADATA drive gives a WEI of 7.9 while the Sandisk is 5.9 (slower than a hybrid hd).

On mine there was was a sticker on the black box that said 'sandforce' i hear there are 'sandisk' stickers on the other ones so you should be able to take it back and have them find you one with the better SSD.

How is your screen btw, any light bleed.

What model did you get? and what were the different component ratings.

    Mine read as follows:

    processor 6.9
    memory 5.9
    graphics 6.4
    3d graphics 6.4
    primary hard disk 7.9

I've had 3 ux31a i5 models. two of them (one with ddr3lm memory and one with ddr3 had these exact scores). The other one with ddr3lm and sandforce hd only got 5.9 on the graphics benches for some reason.

my 31a only has 5.9 for aero too.

so now I reran it and got 5.9 for aero and 6.4 for 3d. Maybe if I run it again I will get something different again.

Thats sweet! Though if Best Buy gave the xbox 360 at $999 then we could sell back for about $150 leaving the actual cost to $937 but $980 is great! Do you reckon this gift card deal stay until end of august early september?

BB does give the xbox as long as you have a valid college ID and .edu email account. The gift card is good for 1 week..expires July 21st.

my community college doesn't offer a .edu email address but I do have a college school id so it wouldn't work?

Is there any place I can get a free .edu address?

Like do I need to sign in and accept some kind of BB link?

Its a free Xbox 360 4gb, with the purchase of a windows laptop.

No, it wouldn't work but you may be able to talk to them and bring proof. The reason is that you have to apply for a coupon code and they will only send it to a .edu email accounf. You then bring that code and your id to the store, buy any laptop for at least $699 and they will give you the xbox right there and then.

My primary says 7.5 but all others are the same as yours. I may or may not bring it back. My first ux31a from amazon had everything right except screen bleed but its battery only made it ~4.5 hours... this one went ~6.5 hours ... I might sacrifice for better battery, minimal light bleed, and a slightly slower SSD of 7.5 on WEI with a better battery.

It's really hit / miss getting a good one of these. I had two of the ux31a db51 models and they both had bad screen bleed. I have a best buy model now and the screen is great, have the fast ssd but have ddr3 versus ddr3lm memory... I think my fan works a i bit more often on the bestbuy model and gets a little louder when it does. Right now im figuring thats a trade ill live with.

Yes, it's a tradeoff with any of these. None are perfect and you could always spend a few hundred more for a Samsung with a slow as crap SSD and lousy screen, or 5-600 more for a Sony with a similar screen or a few hundred more for Apple and get a lousy screen and a bill for a copy of Windows...that is the only competition...all in all this is by far the best pc right now even with a slight flaw here or there.

It is the UX32VD that can be upgraded - one of the DIMM slots and a regular SATA connector 7 mm hard drive (a 9.5mm will work if you remove the metal casing for SSDs).

None of the UX31 models can be upgraded because of the unibody design AND proprietary SSD boards used within.

    Hi all,
Sorry in advance for what turned out to be a lengthy post. I just got the Ux31a as a birthday gift and I'm still playing with it and getting it set up.

A couple of observations: I live in a house of mostly macs and this is truly the first PC laptop that seems to equal or better the total presentation you get with the Macbook Air.

I got the i5 model. I have to say that in terms of bang for the buck $999 this beats the air by a good bit.The screen is superb as is the keyboard whose backlight is more even than the 2 airs we have.

The trackpad still sucks but I have yet to see one that works as well the ones on macs under OSX

One question, I have gotten one with the sandisk SSD installed and I have read back a few pages and the gist seems to be that this is not the SSD to have.

However I'm a bit confused and wonder if the "tests" might not be totally accurate, specifically the Windows experience result. I'm getting numbers similar to what others posted here, BUT....... when I compare side by side with a toshiba unit that gets a 7.9 WEI, this machine is demonstrably real world faster.

My test is admittedly not real scientific, it consists of copying in file manager about 20GB of files of various sizes all the way from a few KB all the way up to just over 1GB in size.

The toshiba is somewhat comparably (or better) specced. It's a 2nd gen i7 with 6GB RAM and has (according to the device manager), samusung 830 SSD.

This unit is of course an ivy bridge unit but with the i5.

So this has me wondering if the samsung drive is not as fast as I thought it was (despite what the WEI says) or is there some other bottleneck/flaw in my test?

The other significant difference is that the ASUS has the factory windows load while the toshiba did have it's OS reloaded about a week ago.

Any ideas would be welcome, thanks

PS. even if this is the "slow disk" I think I'll still be happy since I'm in love with the machine otherwise

Any thought on whether OC'ing the Geforce GT620M is doable in terms of thermals etc? Gaming isn't very important to me but if I can OC it a bit I might squeeze some extra FPS out of this computer.

And btw Gigabyte U2442N is looking as a very strong contender to this comp with full CPU and GT640M, sadly no info on distribution in the nordic countries.

I'm not really sure OC is advisable on the UX32VD since it would not have much headroom available for cooling within the limited real-estate.

Even I wouldn't go with the WEI numbers. You could try some of the real-world benchmarks and common usage cases like:
    1. Bootup time
    2. Launching applications which read a ton of data on startup like Photoshop and other Adobe stuff.

The minor difference in numbers from IOMeter or HDTach might not do justice for the real-world results you might end up seeing.

"Full CPU" is not a plus unless it is a 10 pound brick with 8 pounds of that being battery to run it. This is not a competitor at all. The only competitors are MBA, Samsung, Toshiba and SONY right now. I would love to include the Vizio but can't until they offer a 13 inch screen.
