Was reading on other brands like acer/dell. And there seems to be junkwares in them and that a clean install is recommended after getting e new comp. But hw abt ASUS? Are there such junkwares too?
-
Asus only installs Windows XP on their systems and maybe a few essential programs such as anti-virus software, etc. Other useful software such as Nero Burning Rom are bundled with the notebook, but not installed by default.

Ditto.... it's one thing we and Asus pride ourselves in.... some companies make a lot of money on installing certain programs because they are a form of advertising... certain links in the web browser and things like that... The main goal is performance and running just the essentials are very important to that and therefore there really is no need to do another format and clean install with buying a system. Now, Asus' systems are going to come all loaded with drivers and do forth and a lot of people don't even like that, even though there isn't any "junk" on there. One thing we do is install the OS and unless the customer specifies, we leave the drivers off so they can see nothing but the OS is installed and they can choose what drivers they want installed... and what not to (incase they have a better or newer version handy)....
Thanks for bringing up this point... I always thought it was a big deal and not enough people talked about it. -

Your laptop will last as long as you want it to last. There is no way any PC can instantly become obsolete, its only what you make of it. There will always be a system better than yours, no matter how upgraded you buy it.

That's right.... Computer parts are are moving light years faster than software is...... At some point every 4-5 years, software will try to catch up, but you're more likely to get sick of using the system for years, that you'll go out and buy a new one just to have something new in your life and get up on the latest technology..........

About Anti-Virus, I personally like McAfee. It has less cluter and also it is less intrusive. Howerver, since my Asus come with Norton, I might as well use it. It's not that bad.

AVG free edition is also nice

Avast works for me. And it is also free.

Another vote for AVG Free -- the frequent updates are great, the price is unbeatable and so far it's kept buggies off my PCs.
