Hey everyone,
Just saying hi and introducing myself to the Asus community here at NBR. I just ordered an Asus X83VP-X1, it turned out to be around $870, but there's an $100 mail-in rebate, so can't say it's that bad of a deal for a 4670 in a portable laptop! I can't wait![]()
Anyone owners have a notebook cooler for this laptop? If so which one?

I agree, this notebook offers very good performance for the price. I slightly prefer its mainstream cousin, the N81VP, for a couple of reasons but the X83VP can be found for a bit less money.
Wow, I actually just noticed that Newegg is selling this laptop for $799 before the rebate, making the final price $699. What a great price for that much power in a portable package...and the superb Asus warranty makes things even sweeter.
Be sure and let us know how you like it once it arrives! -

Yeaup, it's 799 on Newegg, but there's about 70 dollars of taxes and shipping, making it about 870. But the mail-in rebate makes everything worth it.
-
Did you grab the X1 or A1?
-
AmazingGracePlayer Notebook Deity
I got the X1
-
Which state are you in? CA?
-
If you're in NJ, wouldn't the X83 on Amazon's site be a better choice?

You wind up at 830. -

I'm in NJ, I bought it from Newegg, which is $799 + taxes + shipping, which turns out to be $870, then there's the $100 rebate, making it $770 after everything.
-
Congrats on the purchase! I just got me the N81VP-D2.

What state are you in?

congrats. its a great machine for the money

"Newegg has warehouses in CA, TN and NJ, and the appropriate tax rate is charged for any order shipping to these three states. Sales tax for cell phone orders shipping to CA and TN are calculated before any instant savings are applied.
*TN and NJ residents are charged according to their state and local tax rate
*CA residents in Los Angeles county are charged 8.25% sales tax
*CA residents outside Los Angeles county are charged 7.25% sales tax" -
Congrats. I'm looking to buy this laptop but the only thing that bothers me is that the T6600 doesn't support virtualization.
How important is virtualization anyways? -

DO IT

Definitely. Though I am worried how the 2.2ghz cpu will impact my gaming. Will it handle most new games on at least low? I'm ordering it regardless though.
EDIT: while I'm asking questions; can you replace the CPU on the X83 series laptops? I was thinking of getting one of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010340759%201685943078&name=Core%202%20Duo&SpeTabStoreType=1. I know i could just get the A1, but I have to get the X1. -
AmazingGracePlayer Notebook Deity
Yes you can replace the CPU, and no the CPU will not bottleneck 90% of the games you'll play.
-
Sweet! I feel a lot more reassured about buying this. This is my first computer, let alone laptop. Thanks dude. (well, first computer that wasn't A.) the family's or B.) a complete POS).

I use virtual machines often enough, but it's always on a software level. Basically, if you need to ask that question you probably won't miss it. -

Hey, hijacking my thread here, how did you manage to OC the P8400 to 3.12GHz?

I don't know. Most people don't run their overclocks at the max tested though, they're more likely to run at the highest clocked stable speed. -
can you overclock this thing?
i'm looking at getting this tomorrow, 12/29/09, wondering if this can be overclock, if not i might get the a1.
thanks. -

Wow I just ordered this yesterday morning, and when I checked tracking it says it's out for delivery already at 5AM this morning. I guess paying taxes is like paying for next day delivery!!

Another thing, how do you change it so that the computer doesn't go to sleep when you close the screen?
-
Right click battery icon->power options->choose a plan->advanced power options->Power Buttons and Lid->Lid Close Action

looks good, i read most of your comments, i'll be buying this to play WoW and watch videos. only thing that worries me is the tax and shipping. its soo costly, kinda wished amazon carried it.
also the back design.. is every single one of them like that? -
AmazingGracePlayer Notebook Deity
Ook, thanks!
-
They just dropped the price by $10 again. Was 930+ last night.

Is there a way to un-partition the hard drive? All the music on my iTunes will not fit on the 75GB HDD...
-
Open disk management (control panel->administrative tools->computer management->disk management, or alternatively click start orb->right click my computer and select Manage, then click Disk Management. Select the secondary partition and DELETE it (not format) right click the first partition and EXPAND VOLUME.

Also, the normal max cpu multiplier is 8.5, but if you run a really intensive single-thread task Montevina-based chips will bump up the multiplier higher for the core in use, so I ran a video encoder and set the affinity on that and most of the processes in task manager to one core to get it to overclock.
Oh, and it helps if you can do this somewhere cool.
The highest I can stably run for games is 2.85Ghz though.
You probably didn't need that much of an explanation. -
What ram do you have jacob? I'm pondering flashing my ram to 667mhz but am too lazy to install xp32bit so that I can use taiphoon burner..

You might also want to check out spdtool--it seems to work in 64-bit OSes.
Just bought myself an Asus X83VP-X1
