    Hey everyone,

Just saying hi and introducing myself to the Asus community here at NBR. I just ordered an Asus X83VP-X1, it turned out to be around $870, but there's an $100 mail-in rebate, so can't say it's that bad of a deal for a 4670 in a portable laptop! I can't wait :D

Anyone owners have a notebook cooler for this laptop? If so which one?

    Hunter

I agree, this notebook offers very good performance for the price. I slightly prefer its mainstream cousin, the N81VP, for a couple of reasons but the X83VP can be found for a bit less money.

Wow, I actually just noticed that Newegg is selling this laptop for $799 before the rebate, making the final price $699. What a great price for that much power in a portable package...and the superb Asus warranty makes things even sweeter.

Be sure and let us know how you like it once it arrives!

Yeaup, it's 799 on Newegg, but there's about 70 dollars of taxes and shipping, making it about 870. But the mail-in rebate makes everything worth it.

I'm in NJ, I bought it from Newegg, which is $799 + taxes + shipping, which turns out to be $870, then there's the $100 rebate, making it $770 after everything.

Ouch, I don't have to pay taxes from the egg. The only thing I'd have to pay over the base price is shipping (currently at just less than $15). Still, as you said it's worth it even for $770. That thing packs a decent punch, and the video card is definitely superior to most others in this price range.

VA. I assumed you were in CA but now remember that Newegg has warehouses in other states as well. From their FAQ:

"Newegg has warehouses in CA, TN and NJ, and the appropriate tax rate is charged for any order shipping to these three states. Sales tax for cell phone orders shipping to CA and TN are calculated before any instant savings are applied.

*TN and NJ residents are charged according to their state and local tax rate
*CA residents in Los Angeles county are charged 8.25% sales tax
*CA residents outside Los Angeles county are charged 7.25% sales tax"

Congrats. I'm looking to buy this laptop but the only thing that bothers me is that the T6600 doesn't support virtualization.

    How important is virtualization anyways?

For the average user these days--not.

I use virtual machines often enough, but it's always on a software level. Basically, if you need to ask that question you probably won't miss it.

    Huge amount of luck?

I don't know. Most people don't run their overclocks at the max tested though, they're more likely to run at the highest clocked stable speed.

Amazon carries the X83VP-A1. You pay slightly more for the faster processor. It's not a bad deal, especially if you don't have to do tax.

They just dropped the price by $10 again. Was 930+ last night.

Open disk management (control panel->administrative tools->computer management->disk management, or alternatively click start orb->right click my computer and select Manage, then click Disk Management. Select the secondary partition and DELETE it (not format) right click the first partition and EXPAND VOLUME.

Rebate works. As long as you order before the 31st, you should be fine, as they look at the order purchase date, not the delivery date.

dtwn is right. SetFSB allows for mobo overclocking. The limit is actually the RAM in most cases--it fails before the cpu does I mean. (There are some ways to get around this by flashing new speeds to your ram, but mine is not modifiable.) I basically got really lucky with the Hynix sodimms that came stock.

Also, the normal max cpu multiplier is 8.5, but if you run a really intensive single-thread task Montevina-based chips will bump up the multiplier higher for the core in use, so I ran a video encoder and set the affinity on that and most of the processes in task manager to one core to get it to overclock.
Oh, and it helps if you can do this somewhere cool.

The highest I can stably run for games is 2.85Ghz though. :D

You probably didn't need that much of an explanation.

I have 2x2Gb sticks of Hynix RAM (that's what it says on the labels), CPU-Z identifies it as Hyundai though, which may be the parent company. Nothing fancy about them, just lots of headroom. I know that most people with this model haven't had such success, so I guess I probably got somewhat lucky.

You might also want to check out spdtool--it seems to work in 64-bit OSes.
