it seems to run kind of slow, and I've heard many people talk of all the junk that comes with it. What should I get rid of and what do I need to keep?

thanks to redzapper, i uninstalled a few programs that are decidedly useless: norton, data security manager, instantfun, asus live update, and net4switch. i also disabled chkmail. of course you can do a clean install by formatting your hdd, but that's wholly up to you.

i find the g1s to run EXTEMELY fast, though i'm not quite sure it was because of removing all these programs, though i'm definitely sure it helped. with vista aero, certain things are going to be a bit slower and not instantaneous like they were on xp, so take that into consideration as well.

i also did a hard disk defrag once i removed all the above programs and everything is great at the moment! i just hope my notebook cooler arrives tomorrow cuz this baby can get hot.

If you reinstall Vista, you lose the webcam program, and you also lose the direct control program or something, which AlexonFyre said you should keep. It would make everything cleaner, but wouldn't it be easier to manually remove things, I'm sure it would take less time on a fast laptop such as this.
Just wondering because I'm planning on buying one in a few weeks. =P

Do a quick search - there have been several threads on this one.

The G1S doesn't come with a lot of bloatware/junk compared to other brands and some of the stuff it comes with really doesn't run at startup so they shouldn't affect your laptop speed. Norton live update, asus liveupdate, net4switch, multiframe and chkmail do run at startup so you may want to disable/uninstall those. I did think about it but I personally don't think a clean install is necessary.

Undoing Ruin, glad I could help! FYI, I uninstalled Splendid but somehow, Titan Quest ran smoother with it - don't know why - so I reinstalled it.

For free AV, check out AVG free edition.. NOD32 and kapersky are pretty fast and light on resources but not free..

Yea, it should have pretty much the same bloatware.
