I just got my F6V-X1. This is really a great laptop. It is completely black and for sure unscented. LOL First impressions:
The plastic case looks a bit cheap in comparison to my Vaio FZ, but nevertheless it looks nice and sturdy. I had no problem to set everything up and I am glad that only a bit bloatware was installed (Office trial, Norton and some useless Asus utilities). The specs are not 100% matching with the ones mentioned on the Newegg site where I bought it. The F6V-X1 has no modem and functional RJ-11. It has neither firewire. Both things are absolute not important for me. The sound of the speakers is ok; what I expected from laptop speakers but much better than the one in my Sony FZ. It has a very bright glossy screen with minor reflections. It is quite light and the size is just perfect. First I had some probs to setup the finger print reader, but after a while you know how to swipe your finger over the sensor. You get a windows vista business recovery dvd, driver cd and software cd with cyberlink programs on it. The hard drive is devided in 2 partitions with equal size. I personally doesn't like that, but this is not a big problem to fix with a partition manager.

I will post more impressions soon.

    Marco

What are your opinions re: overall build quality and components used in this notebook?

I recommend keeping the 2 partition setup and keeping your personal data on the 2nd partition. Saves time (and possibly data :D) upon an OS crash.

So far I can say the overall build quality is good. You have to consider that it is not the most expensive notebook. The overall plastic look will bother some people but I can live with that because the "inner values" are really good. I like the discrete ATI 3470 graphics card. It is not a performance monster but much better than each integrated graphics card. I don't want to play anyway games on a 13.3 inch display. The hard drive is from Western Digital, the wireless adapter from atheros, the sound and lan chip are from realtek, the dvd burner from TSST. Altogether you have a good mixture of brand names for all components. The integrated camera is good and I think it is slightly better than the one in my former Vaio FZ. Performance wise I get a 4.0 vista score with this laptop. The battery is good for 2.5 hours under normal use with the medium power settings.

Thank you for your post - looking forward to a review in due course!

How does the LCD screen compare to the average 13" notebook?

Hi..congratulations on your shiny new laptop :) Quick question, how long does the battery last? If it can get close to 4+ hours, I'm totally sold :)

Battery time on the F6 has already been established to max out at ~3 hours, give or take depending on usage pattern.

Not one of Asus' notebooks in the 13" or higher screen size is currently capable of hitting the 4 hour mark; you have to look to their competitors for that, unfortunately. 4.5-5hr on my MacBook :) - see also HP and Lenovo

ClearSkies is right, battery life is in between 2 hours 20 and max. 3 hours with the 6 cell battery. Enough to watch one movie on a plane...For me it is sufficient.
