I got a 9607 3dmark06 and it hit 89c for the max. This was out of the box . I'm now setting up raid 0 and reinstalling at which point I'll start putting newer video drivers on etc.

So where does that leave me as far as GPU? That's probably too hot to overclock correct? So I should probably undervolt? Is it possible I'll be able to undervolt and overclock the GPU?

Too hot to OC? eh its up to you. I have my oc'd to 600/100/1500 and barely go over 91-92 C, but that is with Arctic Silver 5.

Im doing a raid setup soon, let me know how that goes!!!

SirHase - I've seen that thread on how to do it but can you direct me to the part that talks about which temps to shoot for? I was actually hoping Soviet would comment on how he'd approach the machine if he got those numbers. I suspect he'd probably undervolt to cool it off a bit and leave it at that. I need help with what I should do next and not how to do it. Mainly I'm a bit annoyed that this thing has to be clocked down due to heat and would like to get the performance the video card is capable of (if it was in a better cooled system).

xcskiier23 - raid is going fine so far. Do you know if there is a way to install Vista without the bloatware (using the ASUS DVD's)?

    This is interesting:

When I have my processor OCed to 2.3Ghz and running at stock GPU clocks, I get about 9800 in 3DMark06 while a Q9000 only gets 9600.

Thats without the Q9000 being overclocked, of course, but that implies that quad-cores are not really properly weighed in the 3DMark06 CPU scores.

    Edit:

    Regarding the temps:

CPU: Expect low to mid 50C at idle and high 60C to low 70C stressed
GPU: Expect low to high 50C at idle and high 80C to low 90C stressed

The CPU temps, of course, are for P7350s so they will be slightly different with the Q9000

    Tev -

I'm planning on overclocking the CPU as I understand the CPU can handle a bit more (probably) and it's not too hot. I suppose with the CPU I just need to make sure the machine runs without crashing after an overclock more so than worry about the temps?

So low 90s is the highest it's safe to hit and still try and keep the life of the GPU pretty decent?

Yeah. Actually, if it hits the low 90s in relatively non-GPU intensive games, its running a little hot.

    Turn1200-
if you put in the install CD, install windows like it tells you, but when it asks you to pop in the driver CD, just turn of the computer. then turn on your comp and Vista SHOULD start right up into the OS, and then you can install the drivers by THEN popping in the cd.

I did it a while ago, and that is how someone told me to do it. You can bypass all the programs you want from the CD menu.

    Hopefully that helped :)

In regards to undervolting and overclocking the GPU:

I heavily recommend undervolting it because you get a temp drop of 5-8C under load, which is fantastic. Undervolting, though, will severely cripple your ability to overclock if any.

oh, i was answering the question about you undervolting and underclocking the GPU =)

    anyways, about temps:
When I first played with mine notebook ( just out of the box ), I had incredible low temps, like 83C after a couple of 3DMark 06 tests, 62C max CPU temps...

Not sure if I got dust or something in the heat pipes, but now I max it at 90C for GPU almost at every gaming session, this is the temp my fans kick full speed, then the temps decrease very fast to low 80C's, this is where it stay for the rest of my game session usually...

So, I think 90C is fine, more than that means its getting hot even with the fans at full speed...

Oh nice! I didn't try that. It did look like it installed everything else when I popped that "driver" disk in. Can anyone else confirm this? I want to save the few hours of rebuilding it if this won't work.

I confirm =) The amount of bloatware is drastically reduced installing vista that way....

From what you said, your initial benchmark for temperatures was 3d mark, and your second was a video gaming session. Maybe, depending on the games, 3d mark doesn't stress your gpu as much as the game?

3DMark'06 only stresses his GPU for a few minutes. Long gaming sessions, especially intensive ones such as the game that starts with a C, will stress his GPU for as long as he plays.

    @Willard
Yah, Im not the best person to explain things =P

I had awesome temps while playing OR doing 3D Mark tests just out of box :D I once managed to had a max of 77C while playing Crysis for two hours, that was actually the temp I recorded with HWMonitor  Now I easily hits 90C ( at stock voltage )..

If I undervolt my GPU it has awesome temps again, but its unstable  I got a Friday night card :(

So I've been playing Champions Online and hit a max of 97 for the GPU. Great game btw.

I've been playing HL2 for about 1hr sessions , where i'm maxing out at 95c, but mostly averaging 89c.

If I am never going to OC my GPU or CPU, do you guys recommend undervolting both of them?

Yes, I'd undervolt but only if you're certain that you'll never want to OC. Then again, it's all reversible anyway so it's certainly worth a try.

This is, by far, the hottest running notebook I've had. I remember being very worried about my 7800GTX running in the low 80's on my old Inspiron 9300. I'd be quite happy with anything below 90c on this little hot rod.

I know I read asus said the notebook was designed to run hot. Did they ever mention up to what temp was supposed to be ok?

Thanks accuracy - it sounds like my temps are normal for this model.

After applying mx-3 to the gpu, my highest temps after gta4 are 78C. I'll make a short review tomorrow of the mods I have done. Idle temps for the cpu are 24C each core and gpu is 40-42C

    @turn1200

Apparently, 90C GPU wise is nothing to worry about. At least thats what Asus tells us......
